I have been working as a tutor for 30+ years including running my own tuition centre, I would employ this guy BECAUSE he will get good results. For a child to succeed in education they need to know how to think.

Yeah he broke the terms of employment--if for no other reason than penning a book on his work laptop, which of course is the school's property and went back to them when he was terminated. (He didn't even back up his work. 🤦♀️) So while he's great at philosophy and I love his method of speaking to his students and getting them to come up with their own answers, he lacks a lot of common sense and ingenuity. Being vegan is a big threat towards the populations of bees, billions die for the food you need. Vegans should feel ashamed. He's not very good at critical thinking though. I watched one of his videos - after he got exposure he started a TH-cam channel - and he had serious listening comprehension issues, it was weird and cringey for someone who teaches "critical thinking". So who knows what was going on at the school behind the scenes.
Is it obvious? We have no idea why he was terminated, from the information given. He hasn't been able to point to any correspondence showing he was unjustly terminated. For all we know, he violated his contract or the law, and the termination was justified. We just can't say either way, at the moment. Practise your own critical thinking. 😊

At the moment, I haven't observed sufficient evidence in this video to know why he was terminated from his position, if he even was (it's not like I've checked the staff directory for the institution where I don't know where he works). It's one thing to be socialized, it's another thing to be badly socialized by exposure to a toxic environment, and that's what going to school will get you. Most modern schools are also an extremely bad place to go if you want to see wide-ranging opinions and new ideas explored with nuance and an open mind. You can do a lot better in the age of the internet.

As a teacher, I heavily focus on critical thinking. I don't give the students answers. I have them think and come up with their own opinions backed up by evidence, playing devil's advocate to get them thinking about ALL sides of topics, not just what social media and the internet spews out. People need to learn how to think for themselves, as well as think outside the box and outside of social norms. Questioning everything is EXACTLY how you learn from your mistakes and from others mistakes as well. This teacher has the grounds to sue for wrongful termination.

When I was in secondary school in the 90s, most professors taught students how to research and analyze. They asked students to "answer in their own words." Now professors demand that the students "answer in OUR words." These two concepts are worlds apart and very telling of the times.

My experience as an educator is that, with few exceptions, the educational administrators are the most unimaginative, timid, "don't rock the boat" minds out there. Additionally, they are prone to dogmatism and, therefore, repelled by critical thinking.
I'd extend that same comparison to administrators in health sector too, and other bureaucrats.. they are then backed by equally spineless and unqualified politicians..

As an educator, I think firing this person is going too far. But I would after the exercise, try to introduce facts that show why there are concerns that JK Rowling has transphobic views which do exist. This would cause the student to really show how both thinking and the facts presented can lead to very different conclusions. A teacher that only teaches how to think, but don't show ways to find and research the facts can still lead to pretty poor conclusions.

Pretty sure this is incorrect. Smith was a part time teacher at Emerson, but he is talking about losing his full time job. It appears most likely that he was a full time teacher at the high school level and was fired from that job.

But what must certainly be considered is that waiting a few months and then finding some reason to fire someone that appears to have nothing to do with the "real" reason is a common tactic. While I, as an educator, earnestly and honestly did my job, I know I made mistakes. Mistakes that, while not really that egregious, could easily be elevated to be so if there were those looking to dismiss me. (Like being very ill with the real flu and not calling in sick until noon, instead of 7:55 am because one was asleep.)

The fact he hasn't given the reasons for the sacking leaves a lot more questions than answers for me. If I was wrongfully sacked and I had a public platform like he does I'd make sure the public knows and file a lawsuit. As a teacher, I heavily focus on critical thinking. I don't give the students answers. I have them think and come up with their own opinions backed up by evidence, playing devil's advocate to get them thinking about ALL sides of topics, not just what social media and the internet spews out. People need to learn how to think for themselves, as well as think outside the box and outside of social norms. Questioning everything is EXACTLY how you learn from your mistakes and from others mistakes as well. This teacher has the grounds to sue for wrongful termination.

When I was in secondary school in the 90s, most professors taught students how to research and analyze. They asked students to "answer in their own words." Now professors demand that the students "answer in OUR words." These two concepts are worlds apart and very telling of the times.

My experience as an educator is that, with few exceptions, the educational administrators are the most unimaginative, timid, "don't rock the boat" minds out there. Additionally, they are prone to dogmatism and, therefore, repelled by critical thinking.

I'm 65yo and after the last 10 years of impossibly stupid educators it was a relief to know there were still educators who engaged in critical thinking and common sense. My biggest concern was how his fellow "educators" would react? Tragically now we know. I'm sure he'll land on his feet and I hope he knows there are many like me who wish him the very best.
As someone with 40+ years of work in production--20 of which were mostly devoted to teaching--yup, this is just how it goes. Big institutions don't want critical thinking to enter the situation, they want $1AV3$. Followers. Worker bees. Drones. Zombies. ;) You ought to know how it works. If you challenge authority, you WILL be put down like a rabid dog. And if you lack coin, connections, crews, clout, computer code, control, communities, and opportunities... it's OVER. Yer done. You'll be "invisibilized".
As an educator, I think firing this person is going too far. But I would after the exercise, try to introduce facts that show why there are concerns that JK Rowling has transphobic views which do exist. This would cause the student to really show how both thinking and the facts presented can lead to very different conclusions. A teacher that only teaches how to think, but don't show ways to find and research the facts can still lead to pretty poor conclusions.

Emerson College in Massachusetts fired Warren Smith. Donors need to pull support when colleges fire teachers for being excellent and teaching students HOW to think critically.
Pretty sure this is incorrect. Smith was a part time teacher at Emerson, but he is talking about losing his full time job. It appears most likely that he was a full time teacher at the high school level and was fired from that job.

I saw that video, he was very good questioning a person to think, a skill nearly everyone under 40 doesn't have.
