    Excellent! I learned a lot. After around 50+ years of MS I am now EDSS 6.5 in that I need a walker to walk. But I can do The Times crossword in about 20 minutes and am still quite sharp cognitively. So, as you say, EDSS has bias towards lower limb disability compared to other functions. Best wishes, Judy Graham

    Hello ,I am very interested in the subject of multiple sclerosis, and in particular the issue of evaluating disability in patients with EDSS. My question to you, please, is related to disability status score DSS , ambulation, how is this test done exactly ??? Is there a specific sicentific way? Or the doctor asks the patient directly about the estimated distance that he can walk by metres evry day ?? Or are there devices that help you to did the test ? As for my second question, is the dss or more important in determining the degree of disability using the edss compared to the importance of the FSS functional system score?Thank you in advance l need much details as possible

    When is it permissible to not administer the visual optic test ? How does voluntarily skipping the administration of this step impact the overall FS and EDSS scores?

    Hello! I am a 31 year old boymom (I have 4 of them, 3 were born before my MS diagnosis) I was wondering, how would I go about getting my EDSS score from my neurologist? Apologies if this is a bit of a dumb and obvious question, but I am young and our family of 6 is currently living off my husband's paychecks and I haven't worked enough to get SSDI. I am currently only able to get from point A to point B with a wheelchair (I was just upgraded to a power chair in February 2021 for 5 years prior I was using a manual wheelchair)
    Any bit of information is helpful! I watch all your new videos that come out and learn something new everytime!

    • @DrBrandonBeaber
      @DrBrandonBeaber  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You could just ask your neurologist, or you could try using professor Gavin Giovannoni's online self-EDSS calculator which is thought to be fairly accurate: edss.clinicspeak.com/en/#!/welcome I'm not an expert in the legalities of disability, but many people who don't qualify for SSDI do qualify for SSI. This video where I interview a disability lawyer could be useful to you: th-cam.com/video/SPUy8GfVzEU/w-d-xo.html

    Thanks for clarifying EDSS. My own score has gone Down drastically, but it doesn’t take my arms into consideration which just seems wrong that the upper extremities aren’t looked at in people like me. Also, I have a question. Are the visual and coordination scores averaged in with the walking score? Thanks again Dr Beaber!

    • @DrBrandonBeaber
      @DrBrandonBeaber  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a cerebellar (coordination) system subscore, but because of the way EDSS is scored, if there is a significant walking problem, this usually wouldn't influence the overall score. This is part of the problem with EDSS.

    • @msenit4lifepattylong76
      @msenit4lifepattylong76 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dr. Brandon Beaber I agree that’s one issue with the scoring system. I walk well and can generally walk for several miles even, yet I have trouble opening doors. In many places they’re to heavy for me to push or pull. My arms also wear out rather quickly when doing simpler tasks. My core is weak as well. Even so, I’m way better in these areas now too. My last Relapse over and mostly mended from the dehydration (although I still wake up dehydrated 🤔), so it’s time to get back to Retraining. Hoping my EDSS 3 will one day include working arms and a stronger core! Thanks 😊 ❤️

    • @DrBrandonBeaber
      @DrBrandonBeaber  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I may do a video on this at some point. Some common measures of cognitive function in MS are the symbol digit modality test (SDMT) and the Paced Auditory Serial Addition Test (PASAT)

    I'm new to this. If patient worse than 5.0, does one even have to do the systemic FS?

    • @DrBrandonBeaber
      @DrBrandonBeaber  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The individual FS scores are documented in clinical trials, but they would not affect the EDSS.

    You just said right around the four minute mark person is deceased do to multiple sclerosis. My doctor says you don’t die for multiple sclerosis, so what is it what is the correct answer here?

    • @DrBrandonBeaber
      @DrBrandonBeaber  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Generally speaking, it is very rare for someone to die directly from multiple sclerosis, so your doctor is correct. However, for the purposes of EDSS scoring, if someone dies of an indirect consequence of MS, they would be scored a 10 in a clinical trial. An example would be a deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism related to decreased mobility from MS.
