  • Today we are connecting the Valve Index controllers, also known as knuckles to the Oculus Quest 2, this also works with the Oculus Quest 1. We will be doing this completely wirelessly through Virtual Desktop. Yes, you do need a VR Ready PC for this because the Knuckles will only communicate with SteamVR. So today I will take you through the tutorial and run a few short tests, then tell you what I think. I hope you enjoy the video :D

A heads-up to anyone planning to use this set-up: you will need to recalibrate anytime you reconnect using Oculus Link or even if you put the headset to sleep. EDIT: You can keep the calibration ONLY IF you use Virtual Desktop and select ‘center to playspace (staged tracking)’ in VD settings. It won't work this way with Air Link

    • @JonDotExe

Eek, that's a pretty big limitation. Feels like having to redo the chaperone over and over. Fortunately, I only use the knuckles for a handful of games anyway.

Great guide and great that you already included the troubleshooting for common issues people might encounter. Now I just hope it will just work as well with the upcoming DecaGear since I wanna keep the lighthouse tracking of the controllers all around me instead of the limited tracking area of the inside out tracking (got some Knuckles already for my old Vive). As far as I understand the dongles of the Tundra Trackers should work for the Knuckles as well so I can get both the full body tracking and the controllers with just 1 dongle

Hi! Question. If you are using full body tracking with the quest 2 with the vive trackers, you have to use the same calibration technique for the trackers as you do with the controllers. Now if I pair the index controllers, when i have to calibrate the trackers do i do it with the touch controllers or the index ones? And if I have to do it with the touch ones will it still be simple to just switch back to the index ones?

Have you gotten room scale set up when using the Quest 2 with index controllers? If so, how?
I'm not able to get room scale games working with this. e.g. Trover Saves the Universe won't load unless you have room scale configured, and I can't seem to do that.
When I first switched to Quest 2 wireless, my room scale was already set up from my previous HTC hardware. But recently I reformatted, and now I can't seem to set up room scale without a headset that uses the lighthouse trackers.
If I try to set up room scale while using the Quest 2 with the Index Controllers, it claims there is no headset and won't proceed. If I use "Quick Calibrate" under the SteamVR -> Developer -> Room and Tracking settings, I end up in the floor. I tried fixing it with Playspace Mover, but when I load a game like Trover Saves the Universe, my perspective is all wrong.

    (1) Does your quest 2 go on standby when you take it off? (2) When I launch steamVR the Space CAL app opens automatically but also closes automatically when steamVR is shutdown. Does this app need to remain running for the index controller to track properly? (3) does having a boundary setup in quest 2 matter? or can stationary boundary be used? (4) I seem to be stuck in a constant loop of calibration every time I launch steamVR as the Space CAL app keeps opening and steam VR shows all four controllers and base stations. So confused, any chance you could post an updated video with current version of the Space CAL app and using the PCVR link cable (not using virtual desktop)?

If you have trouble, to disable original controllers in steamVrR try this:
remove batt from one q controller(left for example).
    launch seamVR
    turn on left knuckle
    remove second batt
    turn on rigth knuckle
Next time just launch airlink and steamVR, knuckles become primary controllers.

Half the time the base stations just shut off and the other half the controllers lose tracking entirely when I move them even the slightest amount, stopping calibration dead in it's tracks. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? No one seems to have any issues similar to mine...

This seems like the move for me specifically. I have an OG vive and was originally going to update to a reverb g2+index controllers, but after that resident evil 4 vr announcement and 120hz, plus a huge drop in price, not getting a quest 2 just seems like a bad idea. Also I read somewhere if you have a vive, you don't have to buy dongles. So that's even more money I can save.

For anyone who might be in a similar situation I was. I have an absolute amalgamation of vr stuff from different systems now working. Vive base stations, Index controllers, and Quest 2 headset. Instead of getting the dongles, I was able to plug the Vive headset in to my computer while unplugging the HDMI from my computer and the HDMI from the vive hub splitter thing. This way the Indexes were communicating to SteamVR without using the headset as the video source. I would then start SteamVR and verify it detected the controller. (It would say headset not connected or error with the headset etc) Then I used Virtual Desktop to connect the quest 2 to my computer. I would press the restart headset button in steamvr OR just restart SteamVR. This would then connect the Quest 2 headset to Steam and now I could see the steam vr world. After that, I just ran OpenVR space calibrator and used Slow mode with the left knuckle and the quest 2 headset. This overlays both VR environments and matches them without needing to use the quest handsets. Naturally, it took an hour or two to get figured out (especially if I moved to a new house or room) however it only takes about 5 minutes if I am just restarting the system once it has been set up before. Things I learned. 1) Use room space set up on quest, not the sitting area. It seems to hold and remember where you are better which means a good portion of the time you won't need to recalibrate when starting up. 2) Put a piece of paper or something over the face sensor in the Quest 2 to prevent it going to sleep. Don't turn it off or let it go to sleep until you quit out of steamvr. Not sure why but that also seemed to help decrease the about of desyncs.

    Great overview of the setup!
I've actually had this exact set up for a while now but with two additions:
    1. I have Vive trackers set up so I get full body tracking with the Quest 2 wirelessly.
    2. The PC running Steam VR is literally on the other side of the house to the spare room that I use to play VR.
I use a small Linux box in the VR room with Virtual Here to plug the dongles into. Then the PC accesses the USB dongles wirelessly also. It's awesome not being tethered to my PC in any way, not even in the same room. I can literally have my PC in the normal desktop gaming area but still have a completely empty room dedicated to room-scale VR with full body tracking.
Also, I haven't tried it yet, BUT you can install Virtual Here on the Quest 2 itself and use a USB hub on that for the dongles to eliminate the need for any kind of Linux box. I'm a little concerned about eating up the precious bandwidth that Virtual Desktop needs though.

I have a question: do you need to recalibrate every play session, or does the calibration hold for you? I've tested this with my Quest, but unlike my WMR headset, the calibration doesn't stick anytime the Quest is reconnected via Oculus Link (or even if the headset goes to sleep)

    • @Enderplays12

One year too late, but apparently latest Expert+ songs in beat saber are impossible with 90hz inside out tracking. The tracking just can't handle 7+ notes per second. Comparing my movement poll rate to those pro gameplay videos, theirs seem like going from 15fps to 60 for the first time, when it comes to smoothness.
I intend on eventually getting the 2 base stations and controllers, because for my use case I feel frustrated as hell being hardware limited. If you don't intend on doing super fast precise movements, I don't think it's worth it.

This is going to sound weird, but you helped me pass a Beat Saber level...okay, let me explain. I saw that you posted a new video, so naturally I clicked on it. I watched your Beat Saber gameplay, and I saw how softly you were hitting the notes. So I thought "hmmm, let me give that a try" since when I played, I always used my full force on every note because me being stupid though force = more points = better score. So I tried to hit the notes gently, and surely enough, I Beat Full Charge on expert+ first try (I had been practicing at this song for a week now so far). It also helped me to save energy and I used to begin sweating 10 minutes into laying. I just played for an hour, and I not a single drop of sweat formed on me. I am going to play this way for the rest of my days. Thank you!!
Edit: Just beat Commercial Pumping with the same method, I'm now in the double digit range of Expert+ songs beaten!! 10 (so far) to be exact.
