The very genuine look of appalled horror when something highly inappropriate gets said/done/mentioned and is completely ignored or overlooked makes me want to hug all of you. I love too that when the boys in the show do something RIGHT, you praise it too. Scott showing how a girl could feel safe rejecting them was an eye opener for those of us young enough to find it surprising. That you commended him made me smile.

    Giles knew about Angel. He knew becuase he understands Buffy. He used the fake spell to get Buffy to say it out loud, because he knew she had to say it out loud to heal. Notice he also brought it up when Willow was present. He wanted Willow to hear it too. He wanted her to understand how dangerous the magics she is doing is. How dangerous it can be. That there are consequences to doing magic.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I'm not sure that Giles knew the details, just "I knew that there was something I didn't know", to quote Willow, If he knew exactly what had happened, he could have spoken to Buffy directly.

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @Jessica_Roth Buffy needed to say it. She didn't need someone to talk at her about it. And Willow needed to hear it from Buffy, too, not Giles. Consequences is something Willow struggles with. Especially with her conflict avoidant personality.

    • @becca1189
      @becca1189 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@spamfilter32 I agree, Giles had to know that Willow's spell working after Angelus opened the portal was a possibility. I'm sure he at least suspected that it was the case, but he couldn't of known with 100% certainty. What he could be entirely sure of is that she needed to open up about exactly what happened. Buffy's behavior could've been the result of something that Giles couldn't have predicted & I think he was aware of that. Perhaps he didn't try a direct approach with Buffy for that reason as well as not wanting to push too hard. He knew she needed to talk, but he also knew that she had to be ready to talk as well. Forcing the issue might have caused her to shut down all together. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

      Dollhouse is so underrated. I do wish Eliza had agreed to the spin-off but I understand why she didn’t. She was scared it wouldn’t live up to Buffy and Angel(crazy if you ask me), and Joss wouldn’t be able to be as involved as he was with those. He wanted to focus on his family apparently.

    I've heard a theory that the longer a vampire lives, the more they resemble some animal. The Master was resembling a bat somewhat, Kakistos is getting close to a bull... and certain someone we see for a few seconds in the end of this episode starts turning into a hyppo.

    I think the most common understanding is that while Watchers can detect potential slayers, they aren't perfect and can miss some. So, Kendra was discovered early, and probably Faith too (it doesn't look like she was only slaying for a few months), but Buffy slipped through the cracks. I'm not sure if this was ever confirmed by the creators though.

      i don't remember if this bit made it to film and i'll never watch the movie again, but whedon's script includes a bit where the watcher apologizes for having to rush buffy's training.

  • @spamfilter32
    @spamfilter32 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    The Watchers definitely have some form of divination around detecting Slayers. Kendra was identified as a potential Slayer when she was very young and so started her training from a young age, years before she was called. This divination though must not be perfect since we also know that Buffy was not found by her Watcher until she was called to be a Slayer in LA. From this we know there are a set of potential Slayers, and the Watchers have an imperfect divination that can detect these potential Slayers, but some slip through the cracks (Like Buffy who wasn't detected until after she was called). We also know it isn't random which potential Slayer gets called because Giles told Buffy, "There is a reason you are here, and a reason it is now!" Fate picks which Slayer is called based on some criteria about where a Slayer is needed. It also seems fate intercedes to put Slayers where they are needed (Buffy getting sick and going to the hospital to fight the Der Kinderstad).

    Another fun reaction and thank you for the entertaining thoughts and ideas for the future. Just a few things to help inwatching and understanding Buffy. All of your questions will be answered…. Just never on your timeline, never exactly how you expect it, and for part of a story that is unfolding.
    Next. BTVS is told not like a regular series but like an epic novel. The first 12 episodes are like a prologue to the main story. It introduces the characters, the personalities, and actions to form the main protagonist c. Seasons 2 to 7 are the main story and is all connecting. But like an epic, the connections and main points are not fully understood because like life it’s not apparent immediately and can not be understood until the story is growing near its harvest time.
    Always keep in mind the overall narrative is the journey for Buffy to become a strong, independent, free thinking, emotionally strong, confidently sexual person, that understands what real love is for herself and with another.
    With all that the name of the show will tell you what each episode will have… Buffy( humor), The Vampire( Supernatural )Slayer( Action). That’s the fun part that keeps you watching like a novel that keeps you turning the page. You are fully on the Buffyverse now. Buckle up and I know you will enjoy the ride

    My head canon is that the lack of respect shown to Giles indicates that the watchers don’t get to choose the watcher who is actually assigned to the slayer, or it would be the most prestigious position.
    I see them like academic types, with those at the bottom trying to get published, trying to get tenure. This puts a different slant on the first meeting with Buffy. That weird excitement. Maybe he thought he was getting vindication and finally the respect of his peers. Instead he got Buffy, an unprepared, unwilling, uncontrollable slayer that others expected to have such a short run his selection barely counted.

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      No, the Watchers expected Buffy to die soon. It was prophesied. They didn't respect Giles, so they sent a Watcher they didn't think much of to watch a Slayer they expected to die real soon. Save the Watchers they DO respect for the Slayers the think will last.

    • @Jessica_Roth
      @Jessica_Roth หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@spamfilter32 I don't know that the Watchers knew about the prophecy of Buffy's death. (Remember, Angel had the book, not the Watchers.)
      I think that as Buffy had already gotten one Watcher killed, they figured that it was too dangerous to be with her, so they figured they would dump this on Giles, who is only in the club because he's a third-generation legacy (as he mentions in "That Episode with Owen") and he's already disgraced himself by doing all that dark magic with Ethan (not to mention what else that group got up to…it was 5 guys and 1 Dierdre at their "orgies' after all.). So they were like "we're stuck with her until she drops…if she's going to get any more Watchers killed, why don't we start with the disposable one?"

    • @spamfilter32
      @spamfilter32 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @Jessica_Roth I generally agree with that last bit. Still, as for the 1st part, that one book was not the only one with the Prophecy listed. The Master had his own copy of the Prophecy. It is certainly possible that the Watchers had their own, too, that had been kept from Giles. If you know that the Slayer will die soon, you're not likely to tell the person you assign to watch and train the current Slayer.
      It could also be that they expected her to die soon because she was one of those potential Slayers they missed until she was called. They may expect all such Slayers to die quickly due to not being trained by them from an early age. Sort of like how Jedi don't like to train people they don't find before they reach puberty. Kendra had a highly respected Watcher assigned to her, and she was trained since she was a little girl. It is likely they give top billed watchers to the youngest potential Slayers, and ones that get missed until called get the least respected Watchers.
      If this is true, it seems likely that Buffy's first watcher was probably not thought highly of either.

    • @gungho1284
      @gungho1284 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@spamfilter32 That's a good one. The job is so dangerous only the unpopular watchers get the assignment. The morning after this episode aired, I left the 732 (Neptune) for Los Angeles. I arrived on Saturday and moved into the room vacated by the pizza guy who got eaten.

Whistler tells Buffy that he thought he brought Angel to Sunnydale to be his big day. Then he says that he didn’t see her coming. Then the thought process is that Buffy was supposed to die(Prophecy) but Buffy did not follow the Slayer protocols. Having her friends allowed Xander to give CPR , something Angel could not have done. There really was no need to have extensive training because she was to die.

    Buffy references the movie "Single White Female", which was somewhat popular. You can google it if you don't plan on watching it.
    I also wonder how Giles was assigned to Buffy. Cause usually, the watchers are training these girls before they are "Called", but Buffy already had a watcher, who died, so when they chose Giles, they were sure he'd be in charge of the slayer. If you watch the Buffy movie, just remember, the lore is not the same as in the show.
    To be fair to Xander, I know guys who are 40 and they still act like that, so at 17 seems more forgivable XD

  • @Buffy8Fan
    @Buffy8Fan หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Considering how often they debate on whether there will be a new slayer or not, I was curious what their reaction would be.
    I'm not a big fan of Willow trying to force Buffy into the dating life just because she thinks Buffy should. Buffy will when she's ready. I feel like Buffy only asks him out at the end because people have made her feel smaller by thinking she needs to date when she doesn't whether Angel was in the picture or not. But since he was, and with all Buffy went through, Willow should let Buffy take it at her own pace. And concerning the excuse of not knowing what happens during _Becoming,_ Willow and Xander and Giles still know what Buffy's been through emotionally with Angel and Angelus before that, so trying to set her up through even imitating Faith's line/nickname for Buffy always bugged me. The jealousy moment Buffy has around that time as Willow tries to quote Faith only proves Buffy isn't ready when Scott tries to give her a Claughdah ring. At the end after she opens up, she may have started the healing process, but it's still too soon for dating.
    Vampire can consume human food, it just doesn't sustain their bodies. Blood does.
    The group seems back to form, but the issues are just below the surface, being covered up by what seems to be the group back to normal. Yelling at each other didn't really fix anything. It just put all the issues on the table. Said issues still need delt with. The real question is will they get delt with or go back to being bottled up. With Angel back that is going to be a test.
    Mikey and Mike: "That happened?" and "How?" They explained he was an old vampire. That's what happens when vampires get old. I take it as the equivelant to humans getting wrinkles, age spot, etc. While The Master's name and age aren't mentioned in-universe, the script says about both that he was, _Heinrich Joseph Nest, roughly 600 years old._ This potentially makes Kakistos older than The Master. The Master had a permanant vampire face. Kakistos has a permanant vampire face, cloven hooves, and had such thick skin a standard stake wouldn't do.
    Unless Faith considered the motel her home, vampires have access. Plus, she was leaving, even if vampires needed an invite, the second she made the decicion to leave, it would be free reign for vampires. But, I'm a subscriber to the first theory over the second one.
    The best way to explain why Buffy is a better slayer is explained when Spike says, "A slayer with family and friends. That sure as hell wasn't in the brochure." Combined with not having been raised to do it and therefore having more personality to her skills, as she states to Kendra, is why she's lasted so long and beat many old vampires. Spike saying the above line made him the first in the series to acknowledge to that point that it was good fior Buffy to not fight alone, even though Spike considered it bad.

    Well, you have to understand also that California is about as far away from England as you can possibly get. I mean, maybe there's a few locations more remote as far as the relationship between England and California. But that changes the dynamic. It's not convenient to travel from their base, which is based in England. All watches. are English by the way. That's a big factor as to why the influence of the council isn't more prevalent.

  • @Jessica_Roth

    Mikey is exactly right. Xander was being written as a hero last season, and now they're making him a clown.
    (The contemporary fan critic David Hines noted that David Greenwalt [writer] uese the same plot device to make us feel sorry for Buffy in this episode as Greenwalt used in his last script, "Ted". Once again, Buffy's friends are all fawning over the new character and ignoring her and gossiping behind her back, and poor sad Buffy gets to pout.
    The difference is that in "Ted", Xander was being drugged. [And Willow was still pretty loyal after Act I]. I don't mind Joyce being so awful that she insults Buffy right in front of Buffy's face ["Buffy can be awfully negative"] because the show has already established that Joyce is a pretty crappy parent. But Willow and Xander are better than that, so it would be nice if Greenwalt wouldn't use this cheap device.)
    Of course, there's a reason for that, The show's primary fandom was a bunch of rabid Buffy/Angel 'shippers, who HATED Xander for the "kick his ass" fib in 2.22 and somehow blamed HIM for Angel going to Hell. (How knowing that Willow was trying to resoul Angel would have helped Buffy avoid what she had to do is not explained, but who needs logic when you have a scapegoat?") A vast amount of the Buffy/Angel fans wanted *Xander* sent to Hell, at this point.
    So all of a sudden, Xander is treated like a comedy supporting character, and isn't even in the episode after the middle of Act II. Come in halfway through the episode, and you don't even see Xander once. (Or Cordelia or Oz, but they're less-prominent characters, IMO.)
    I mean, seriously, why should Xander cut off Buffy's telling the rocket-launcher story? That's XANDER's story! Xander thought up the plan, Xander pulled off the heist (even though he had to ask Willow to recruit Oz, which was VERY awkward, you'll recall) and Xander showed Buffy how to work the damn thing. It's literally a "Xander saves the whole WORLD!" story, perfect for impressing sexy new Slayers. But instead Greenwalt has Xander act annoying so we can be sad for Buffy. Shove it, Buffy. Shove it, Greenwalt. Boo.
    All that said, I actually love this episode. Dushku is sexy, the words in the "Angel was cured" scene are nearly poetry, and there are some great jokes, such as "You really do need to find the fun, B-" (Buffy gives Willow a LOOK OF DEATH) "-uffy." or W/X giving Faith the tour. Just a couple of minor complaints, honestly.
    Like…I'm all for innuendo (Buffy thinking that Willow is suggesting *fellatio* as an icebreaker is hilarious! Mind out of the gutter, Buff!) but as I wrote before, until Buffy starts sneaking into the stacks to snog Cordelia, "lesbian subtext" like "You hungry?" "Starving" feels tacky and exploitative. JMO.

    • @becca1189
      @becca1189 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When the subtext was 1st pointed out by fans, Whedon denied it. It wasn't until after he reviewed the scenes in question that he realized it was true. In interviews, the writers said that the lines weren't written as subtext , but it's how Eliza read them & no one thought to correct her. I firmly believe the double entendre was intentional, in this particular case, just for laughs & in recognition of their current state of arousal -- which could just as easily be interpreted as wanting to have someone of the male persuasion, a little alone time, or a cold shower.
      Honestly, I think Eliza got it right. It suits Faith's character. Faith isn't simply sexy, she oozes sensuality. She's very comfortable in her own skin & I can easily see her being in touch with her desires (even unconventional ones). Sexuality isn't black & white. And neither is Faith. I think Eliza did a very good job embodying Faith's character. ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

    Faith Hope & Trick a pivotal episode with the introduction of Faith many fans absolute favourite from the entire Buffyverse. Some great scenes in this when Faith says 'don't you find slaying makes you really hungry and horny' and all the Scoobies turn to face Buffy. Faith is of course totally different to Buffy in being outgoing and streetwise and sexually overt, and we can see Buffy's jealously in the gang engrossed with Faith's stories. The Mayor is was mentioned first in S2, but we had not seen to this point. We see Faith's propensity for pure violence when needlessly pummelling the vampire when Buffy needed help, it seems trait of her character. At the end we see Buffy place The Claddagh Ring on the spot Angel was killed, and he is restored from Hell. It only gets better and better from here, this is a great Season.

    The watchers council usually has methods of detecting "potential slayers" (girls who are maybe destined to become the slayer in the future), the council finds the girls, convince the parents to give them up, and then raise them train them and indoctrinate them.
    Buffy is an anomaly because she wasn't detected in time, she became the slayer before they found out and therefore they didn't have the time to train her (and indoctrinate her)
    Rupert Giles is a different sort of anomaly.
    Watchers are supposed to be extremely obedient, manipulative, and useless.
    However a child's is rebellious, resourceful, honest, involved, empathetic, and to type it all off a wizard.
    Rupert Giles definitely doesn't fit the mould of what a watcher is supposed to be.
    He wasn't supposed to even have a slayer just monitor the helmet.
    Buffy's first watcher dies in the movie and after the events of the movie her mum decides to take a job in Sunnydale.
    The union between Buffy and Giles is the last thing that the watchers council would have wanted.
    Instead of manipulating Buffy into fulfilling her role Giles actually cares for her and listens to her concerns her wants and her needs.
    All of that is the reason that Rupert is mostly the black sheep of the family as far as to watchers are concerned.

    My theory also is that the watchers who “work in the field” are treated with less respect because that’s often the way it works in bureaucratic society. i had to stop drinking sodas for a min, highly addicted to them was drinking 2x12 packs a day. i tricked my brain by switching to ginger ale lol not the same, but my brain all "YAY FIZZLES" and ignore the fact it didnt have the caffeine in it haha
    kinda slipped back into drink it tho, so i would say right now dr pepper, but more so the strawberry and cream flavor combo. outside of that i go for rootbeer or orange cheap brands haha. as for the zero meh tastes like syrup to. also the diet in diet soda is not related to weight at all lol in fact those are worse for you, specially if you have diabetes. its loaded with carconigens (misspelled) which are very bad for you...
    "i like willow the lil witch" dont we all lol team willow for all time
    the cloven foot thing is in allot of lore, remember they call these vamps "demons" so as the evil corrupts them over time they evolve/devolve into more demonic forms.i its fun lore, games like legacy of kain also does this.

    SPOILERS FOR ALL SEASONS OF BOTH SHOWS AND COMICS!!! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
    It's interesting to hear Faith's line about Giles' looks in this episode when you take the comics into account. Giles' adult mind is in his tween body and all he can do is stare at Fath's chest, which makes Faith uncomfortable. It outs what Giles was like pre-Ripper days and shows how much character development Faith has gone through. I love the comics as the largest underlying theme is all the characters dealing with the issues they never do one the show. All the character development that either doesn't happen on the show or only just starts beginning in S7 is the whole point, thematically to the comics.

    Reminder, the movie isn't canon to the show. If you're expecting insight on Buffy, the TV character, from the movie, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and confusion.
    The TV show is a reboot. They kept the titular character and some of the basic concepts but revamped the lore and the events.
    Joss didn't have complete creative control over the movie. He was dealing with a director who didn't share his exact vision for the movie and an actor who insisted on writing his own lines and couldn't take direction. The movie that got made and the one Joss originally scripted are substantially different. So much so that Joss absolutely hates the movie.
    Reccommend: Wait until after you complete Buffy, the series, to watch the movie. Then you can do a proper compare and contrast between the movie and the series.

    Buffy is not THE slayer, she is A slayer. At the start of the show, Buffy was THE slayer. When Buffy died in the S1 finale, Kendra was called and the slayer line was passed onto her. Buffy was revived, so she is an anomaly, but she is no longer THE slayer. The slayer line was flowing through Kendra and when she died Faith was activated. The slayer line now flows through Faith. If Faith were to die, a new slayer would be called. Buffy is now the extra. She’s not part of the slayer line anymore. She should be dead. If she were to die, a new slayer would not be activated. While Buffy is the most successful slayer, her existence doesn’t matter when it comes to the traditional slayer line. Also, Buffy is the most successful slayer because she has friends and family that support her and fight with her. All other slayers have fought alone. Buffy is also the only slayer to have an incredibly hands on watcher. All other slayers had watchers that were hands off and would send their slayers on missions and expect them to return when it was complete, like we saw with Kendra. In only a couple short years, Buffy has redefined what it is to be a slayer. Giles saw that would be the case when he met her and that is why he didn’t push the slayer handbook on her as referenced in the What’s My Line? S2 episodes in his conversation with Kendra. If Buffy has changed the game this much already, the possibilities for which she can continue to be influential are endless.

    Re: episode 3x2 -- I got a kick out of "Dead Man's Party" when I first saw it. I thought and still think that the only reason everyone started venting at the party is that the mask was bringing buried feelings to life, and that none of them would have behaved like that in normal circumstances. For most of the episode, they were trying NOT to express their negative feelings, to a point where they were avoiding Buffy. As Xander says just before the venting starts, "You can't just bury stuff, Buffy. It'll come right back up to get you."

      Sorry, I'm not sure of the time stamp, but it happened most of the time you guys were talking - not actually during show playback, and especially during the after-show reaction. It seemed like a slow drumming early on, then as you got more excited and louder, it got worse. I'm surprised no one else has mentioned it, or that you didn't notice it during editing. At first, I thought it was music you all had in the background (because it seemed like drumming), but later, I realized it wasn't. I really don't know anything about mics, but I thought perhaps their volume might be set too high. I should mention I was listening with earphones on, so perhaps that had something to do with it. Maybe it's just that I'm crazy, though, since you didn't hear it in editing and no one else has mentioned it.
