To this day I regularly write "become invincible" on my to-do lists, just as a silly joke for myself. 😂 (Unfortunately I'm a procrastinator, so I'm still rather vincible.)
The dance Buffy and Faith do at the Bronze, mirrors animation Kitty and Rogue do in _X-Men: Evolution_ with an episode titled _SpykeCam_ (1x08). It has become famous for that episode and the series, but was literally mirroring Buffy and Faith's dance because some people behind the scenes were such fans of The Buffyverse while it was originally airing. There's an official moment to each season where the core arc starts. In season one it's the series premiere, in season two it's Spike's introduction aka episode three, this season had the first half of the season wrapping up all the issues of Becoming for half the season, so the core arc doesn't start until this episode. That doesn't mean that there aren't elements of S3 story not having to do with Becoming in the first half, but it's more buildup to the arc's start. The core arc doesn't start until here. It's intriguing that it's so far into the season. I think it could have been good on Buffy's part to tell Faith about Ted and her small bit of time in assuming she killed a human (without revealing he was actually a robot until later) in order to help show Faith she could identify. I think it would go a long way. The look on Buffy's face at the end makes me think Buffy doesn't understand, when despite Faith moving/dumping the body, their situations are still identifyable. Faith is just hiding the same emotions and Buffy has friends where it doesn't seem Faith does at this point.
Wesley is the watcher for both Buffy AND Faith. When the Watcher's Council decided that Faith would stay in Sunnydale indefinitely they said that Giles was to act as the watcher to both slayers. Hence him no longer being a watcher, Wesley was given the same assignment and sent to Sunnydale to be the watcher of both slayers.
What is interesting with this episode is that we saw how Buffy reacted when she thought she killed someone in Ted (and Cordelia back then said slayers should have license to kill 👀).
"Wait! Stop! Think!" "No. No. No." That's Faith in a nutshell. The slam cut from the vamp lair to the dance scene at Bronze is so completely primal. Dancing with wild abandon, the sheer exultation of survival and glorying in victory is just pure Slayer. They are apex predators, tigresses with opposable thumbs and three digit IQs. Buffy came VERY close to giving Angel another moment of pure happiness. Regarding the killing of the Deputy Mayor. That was not murder. It was some degree of involuntary manslaughter. It occurred in the heat of battle, as the perception of self defense. Aside from the supernatural element, it would still be extremely difficult to convict Faith on that at trial. She's a juvenile, so even a guilty plea would likely only result in probation and counseling, maybe a brief in-patient stay for psychiatric treatment. She badly needs parenting, stability, boundaries and education. Right now, she's a loose cannon.
If you drive a pointed implement (like a stake) into chainmaille with sufficient force, you can spread the ring and penetrate, and Faith drives that stake with sufficient force.
Buffy didn't say anything to protect Faith. But she didn't help Faith commit the murder ! She actually shouted for Faith to stop ! Because Buffy realized in time that it was a human and told her not to kill him. The only reason she would be considered an accessory to murder if because she didn't say anything. But she didn't help to get rid of the body or anything. Her saying "WE" is just her being empathetic. And not wanting to let Faith deal with that on her own (and also, because she feels guilty about the man). Buffy was also trying to convince Faith to do something here, to talk about it to someone. So... I wouldn't consider trying to convince someone to do the proper thing being an accessory to murder. She wants to deal with that man's death, but she also wants to protect Faith in the process. Faith who's her friend, a slayer, younger than her, AND who she thinks is in pain after doing something soul crushing. I can't blame her for that. I understand your take though. But... I would consider Buffy an accessory to murder, only if she continues to lie for Faith, and help her conceal the murder and herself. Also, Wesley has been sent to watch both Buffy AND Faith ! Not just Buffy ! Regarding the mayor, he's not just human ! It's not clear what he is. Demon, half-demon, witch, something else... But it is established in this episode that he is an enemy of Balthazar. And he has said himself several times already that he is old. I mean... just in this episode he says :" I haven't seen anything like this in, uh... Well, a good long while. Where's the owner of these fine implements? " and after "I have waited longer than you can imagine for this." Also think about what Wesley says : " Fifteenth Century duelist cult, deadly in their day. Their numbers dwindled in later centuries due to an increase in anti-vampire activity and a lot of pointless dueling. They eventually became the acolytes of a demon called Balthazar, who brought them to the New World, specifically here. [...] I've researched this town's history extensively. [...] They were driven out a hundred years ago. Happily, Balthazar was killed. I don't know by whom. " And after that Balthazar says " It's been a hundred years since my enemy crippled me. Now ultimate power is within his grasp. And I shall *not* let it be! " and later when dying "When he rises... you'll wish I'd killed you all." I know it's only implied earlier. But now, it's quite clear the Mayor is not entirely human. No human lives for hundred of years and looks like they are fifty at best XD
I think what they are proposing is that the Mayor is getting powers via magic or whatnot ( perhaps from the one ring? ;-) -- so, he doesn't have to be a demon
Aside from Buffy’s uncertainty about her future, Wesley is also a big part of why she is so tempted by faith. It’s definitely a mix of a lot of things and it causes her to at least temporarily say “screw it, I’m basically a super hero, why do I have to listen to anyone or have anyone say what my future should be” any good super hero story has this kind of arc for the hero at some point.
Just FYI but chainmail is very weak to puncturing damage and simple arrows without tips can penetrate it fine. A big thick piece of stake wood driven into them with deadly force by someone strong enough to pick up a car would have no problem at all penetrating through it.
Bad Girls was a watershed episode where all what we suspected of Faith comes to fruition. We see her influence on Buffy leading her down the wrong path. Buffy as we know is very much a good person, and rejects this way, but even though Faith kills Alan by accident, as we know it was all her fault due to her psychotic behaviour, and she just doesn't care, even when Buffy begs her to do the right thing she says she just doesn't care, having weighted and dumped Alan's body. And of course we have the introduction of Wesley. Although not liked by Buffyverse fans at first, Alexis Denisof (yes Alyson Hannigan's husband in real life) does a great job bringing this character to life.
Yeah, Faith says she doesn't care, but by how she's acting, she does care, but she's burying that deep. They handle this subject pretty well I think, Faith being in denial and avoidance, Buffy feeling guilty even though she tried to stop Faith from doing it. Pretty intense.
Faith definitely cared; she was just putting up a strong front, but this is the start of her heading down a dark road. I think this episode also highlights the experience levels between Buffy and Faith. Faith is fairly reckless and Buffy, even under Faith's influence, is still more responsible and able to recognize things quicker.
Buffy drowning was meant to be a rebirth metaphor to explain the sudden change in her behavior, going along with Faith on a less ethical spree. Alan's death snapped her back to herself. Also, i love 'on 3 isn't a plan, it's Sesame Street."
I believe it’s a callback to her drowning by the Master in season one; reminding the audience of how she dealt with that trauma in the following episode “When She was Bad”. In this almost similarly (intentionally?) named episode “ Bad Girls” she is processing her trauma from the “Helpless” episode in a similar pattern by following Faith’s lead. The “Zeppo” episode interruption makes it easy to forget that. Ofc the assignment of the new Watcher from the untrustworthy Council is the trigger. Anyway this is my head canon for her unusual less than ethical behavior.
I always assumed Wesley showed up as the Watcher to both Buffy AND Faith, Buffy just happened to be the first Slayer he ran into. Was there dialogue to the effect he was only there for Buffy and I just don't remember it?
Not directly in this episode. But considering Giles has been fired, that is enough to show he's there for both. Wesley just doesn't adapt to the girls situation because he's as much a puppet of The Watchers Council as Kendra was slayer-wise, and is therefore treated like the non-Giles Watcher. Faith has a tougher exterior to break through and The Scoobies have been messing up in the department of making Faith feel welcome, so she isn't going to trust Wesley on Buffy's behalf. Plus, Faith tried to trust a watcher, who turned out to be rogue. Due to all this, Faith's walls are higher than when she arrived in town and they were already high at that point.
a ping pong ball make a perfect hole in a ping pong racket if it travel fast enough.....are they forgetting Faith and Buffy have similar to Luke Cage 3-ton superstrength. Faith just hit the stake with enough force
Actually, there is a reason why Sunnydale has a rich history. Well, the Doylist reason, of course, is that writers didn't want to send Buffy all around the world, but there is a Watsonian reason too. Keep watching.
I suspect that Buffy became ashamed by what she's become. She's looking at the news to see if they were mentioned. She told Willow not to come on the mission because as a slayer she can handle Faith's recklessness, but Willow could die helping them. She would also be disappointed in Buffy's recent behaviour. Even in her introduction episode Faith acted similarly. She's too immature and doesn't want to be held accountable. I can see her side, she's had a rough life so all she does is out of self-preservation.
Kendra's watcher..🤔🤔🤔🤔 we see the connection that Giles has with buffy. Kendra was given to her watcher at a very young age. Imagine the connection that they probably had considering her watcher basically raised her. Put in the idea that her watcher ultimately failed at their job because the Slayer in their care is dead.
