I cry when I hear Sacred Harp music, my precious mother loved this music and told of the many times in her youth she went to singings and we had the book in our house , I was more interested in rock music. How many times I rue the fact that I did not show interest in mama’s music. At seventy nine years old my eyes are full of tears listening to this video, good bye mama!

Yes, thank you Lord for Sacred Harp coming to the internet, otherwise I would never have known such beauty. Thanks to David Lee and co for working so hard to keep this going. From my Australian heart to all who sing this.

God is good. This is the sound pf his people. There is a desperation in sacred harp hymns. No bs. Its real thirst for god. We cannot let it die

This music is not part of my Catholic religious tradition, but I find it compelling and beautiful in its own way. Thank you for sharing this.

In many ways its similar to chants used by groups like the gregorian monks, this just has more of an early modern and german influence to it rather then medieval or renaissance latin feel to it.

I love this kind of singing. I recently found my birth family, since I was adopted as an infant. Many of my blood relatives are probably in this very congregation, in the above video (my maternal blood line are from the Hickox/Lee/Strickland/Crews lines, in the Hoboken/Brantley/Ware county areas). Arthur David and Mary Dell Hickox were my maternal grandparents. When I look at the faces here, and hear these voices, my blood sings and I feel a part of myself in this. Thank you for posting this. Little by little, as I learn more about my origins, I feel more connected.

Thanks so much for making that connection here. A guitarist friend way back tried to explain Sacred Harp w/ the 'shape note' thing to me. As a drummer though it kinda went in an ear and out the other! But I don't remember hearing at all about this *community* that lives and breaths this music. Extraordinary documentary for being only 10 min long about them ... very beautiful.

R.D. Dragon oh yes, there are a LOT of Hoboken recordings. Maybe search for “cooper book” sacred harp... If you can’t find them, let me know. I am sure I have some in my Sacred Harp playlist. Or you can just go directly to my playlist...

@@UGAboy1974 Reply from a regular Hoboken singer: We are having monthly sings in June and September (local night sings) from 7-9, the Tri-State Convention (which rotates between AL, FL, and GA) which has been cancelled for this year, a New Year's Eve Sing, and our all day sing in March. We are looking at current events and will decide closer to time about whether or not we feel it is safe to have the New Year's Eve and all day sing in March. All of our sing reminders and updates are posted to our Facebook page, Hoboken Sacred Harp.
