    During previous episodes, we have explored several tales involving vehicles which have become closely associated with the paranormal. These include the vengeful spirit believed to have stalked the crew of the German Submarine UB-65, and the cursed 1964 Dodge 330 known as The Golden Eagle. In this episode we will finally be adding an aircraft to the list of allegedly haunted transports as we retell the story of the Ghosts of Flight 401.

    In 1981, I was age 11 and attending an all girls school. We were asked to give a 5 minute talk on our favourite book. Everyone else in the class chose classics like Black Beauty, Secret Garden or Roald Dahl. I chose "The Ghost of Flight 401" by John G Fuller 😂 That book sparked a life long interest in the unexplained and supernatural which Bedtime Stories fulfills perfectly!

    Honestly having a ghostly guardian looking out for danger seems like a good thing. I know the idea of seeing a ghost is scary and all, but I cannot think of anything better as a flight crew than having a literal guardian angel there to warn you of any problems.

      Robert "Bud" Marquis (1929-2008), an airboat pilot, was out frog gigging with Ray Dickinsin (1929-1988) when they witnessed the crash. They rushed to rescue survivors. Marquis received burns to his face, arms, and legs-a result of spilt jet fuel from the crashed TriStar-but continued shuttling people in and out of the crash site that night and the next day. For his efforts, he received the Humanitarian Award from the National Air Disaster Alliance/Foundation and the "Alumitech - Airboat Hero Award" from the American Airboat Search and Rescue Association.

    • @weaviejeebies
      @weaviejeebies 26 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I agree. They must've needed to expiate that feeling of responsibility before they could fully leave the world behind. I think some of the people to whom they appeared are very significant. An executive, a mechanic, pilots, and cabin crew. I think the startling nature of making it perfectly obvious that they are spirits by disappearing or looking in from impossible places was purposeful. Their lapse of attention caused a terrible accident that killed their passengers. I think they were saying, basically...boo! "Pay attention. We lost focus for a moment and look what happened. Don't let it happen to you." Once their presence became well known to the employees, the graphic, eerie example stuck in people's minds and got them subconsciously attuned not to make the same errors, and the sightings decreased. I think the lost airplane's parts were a means of connecting with the mortal world to such an impactful degree, like an emotional antenna. Once the executives had them removed, the spirits knew no one was going to easily forget flight 401 and hopefully be safer because of it.

    This happens with boats, too. Most people won’t use parts from a boat that has sunk, even if undamaged and cheaper.

    To those who don't know, the procedure of cannibilizing crashed or wrecked plane parts and using them in other aircraft of the same type is a practice that is still done to this day. It saves on cost and production, especially in planes that are out of production.
    401 is, to my knowledge, the only case of aircraft parts being distributed across the fleet that resulted in ghost sightings. There was a rumor that parts from American Flight 77, the plane that hit the pentagon, were repurposed into other 757s. However that was just a rumor that the 9/11 museum has debunked since *they* have the recovered parts.
    One last fun fact: Frank Boreman of Apollo 8, the first manned orbit of the moon, headed the investigation of Flight 401, and called the ghostly sightings: "Garbage." He's one to talk since he claimed to hear music coming up from the moon.

    • @temerityxd8602
      @temerityxd8602 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There weren't any parts reused from flight 401, that was just something claimed by the author of the book "ghosts of flight 401" which is also the source of all the ghost stories about the flight which he claimed were from Eastern airline employees but conveniently didn't name any of them. It's all really just an urban legend, something that's been repeated so many times that people think it's true.

    • @Tu49
      @Tu49 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @temerityxd8602 Like BTS said, when you have so many reports of **something** happening in relation to Lockheed L1011 Tristars flying for Eastern and Eastern only, you cannot discount them so willy-nilly. Especially since the macabre practice of salvaging parts from wrecked planes is a common cost saving procedure in Aviation.

    • @Nick-zp8wk
      @Nick-zp8wk ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That seems unlikely, considering no plane hit the pentagon.

    • @temerityxd8602
      @temerityxd8602 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@Tu49 The problem is that all those different reports came from a single source, one book written by an author with a history of publishing UFO stories and other wacky things and every subsequent version of the story just references back to that book. Eastern airlines have stated themselves that they have no history of any sort of ghost sightings and while salvaging parts might be used for older planes where spare parts are hard to come by, the Tristar was a brand new plane so this wouldn't really be necessary.

    So I have a very strange connection with this flight, to begin with both my aunt and uncle worked for Eastern during this incident and in fact met while they were both deadheading on a Tristar from Atlanta to Miami, flash forward a couple decades later that very same uncle typically went fishing with me and my grandfather in a canal right off Tamiami Trail quite often and in 1996 (I was still a child at that time) all 3 of us saw ValueJet Flight 592 crash roughly 5ish miles away from us and roughly a mile away from where Flight 401 crashed in 1972. It's a very interesting case, I'll give ya that. The fact the ghost warned about a fire on the plane as well is also noteworthy, when looking back at premonition like incidents such as Flight 191. Reality might be far stranger than we see on the surface.

      I can recall 2 accounts I had, one was seeing a shadow figure at our living room just standing and looking at me, second one is when I heard a voice talking to me even though there was no else with me at the time.
      My mom told me about her account when she was studying with one of her friends (this was back in the 90s during her college years), one of them pointed out to her there’s a person staring at them outside the window whom she thought is one of the care takers, my mom told her that everyone else is inside the house. I was very much a non believer of ghosts untill I had my own experience. I was a KC-10 mechanic and we had parts from an aircraft that caught on fire on the ground and a solider died. The KC-10 aircraft was tail # 82-190 from Barksdale AFB.
    I and many other soliders would report strange noises and apparitions that ALL parts from the burned aircraft would be pulled from all aircraft.

    I once worked with a guy whose father was one of the first responders to the crash. He said it was the most horrific thing he'd ever experienced, and he'd never set foot in the Everglades again. Not because of the crash, because of the feeding frenzy. Not everyone who died that night died in the crash. Many were torn apart by alligators.

    Whoah! I just bought Bay Rum scented soap last night. Last one on the shelf. I saw it and thought of Earnest Borgnine's portrayal of the 2nd officer of Flight 401. Bay Rum aftershave. That smell allegedly appeared on some aircraft and in the hanger of the recovered L1011. And now this video drops (writing this an hour after posting). What a weird coincidence.

    I went to work for Delta in 1990, and spent some years working ramp operations (a baggage handler basically, but I also did some load planning.) After Eastern went under, Delta bought most of Eastern's L-1011s and rotated them into the fleet. There were always stories about ships that had parts from Flight 401 on them. My assumption is that most of them were apocryphal, 3rd or 4th hand, or just tall tales. Still always liked to hear them since it made things interesting. While the ghost stories were probably embellished by the time I heard them, the one thing that the Eastern L-1011s were haunted by was... cocaine, lots of it. At one point they had found so much of it tucked behind cargo panels that the DEA opened a field office at the hangar so they could shorten the chain of custody. Ah, good times indeed. Thanks for telling the flight 401 story, keep up the good work!

    I think it was very stupid of the spooked flight crew to demand the action of removing the old parts. The spectrals were clearly trying to keep the flights safe. And now that they’re gone more accidents can happen verses having ghosts on your side to protect you. I’d choose the latter… that was stupid.

    In the late 70's I worked for a hotel that was owned by American Airlines here in suburban Ft Worth. There were a couple of administrative staff there that had been stews for Eastern at the time of the event.(Eastern lasted until '91 but a lot of them were already jumping ship in the 70's. It was a slow death spiral.) One of them talked about how it was strictly forbidden by management for them to talk about these encounters with other staff. I think they had to actually sign a paper to the effect. One of them knew one of the stews who had seen Repo on a flight. They were steadfast in their belief in these occurrences.

    While doing the research on Flight 401 for my recent book, “Haunted Sky,” I was somewhat taken aback by the account that I read from an anonymous former employee of Eastern who stated that there many people at the airline who had ghostly encounters, but never came forward because of Eastern threatening to fire those who spoke of their experiences. The airline also threatened serious legal action against anyone who came forward to discuss the paranormal events related to 401. Interestingly, this ongoing threat of legal consequences was evidenced by Bob Welch’s song -”The Ghost of Flight 401” with that line in the song: “The ghost of Flight 401, appeared aboard the jet airplanes -In flesh & blood & clothes he came on an eastern airline I can't name”
    In the end, the ghostly encounters from Flight 401 will remain as one of the most intriguing examples of unexplained supernatural phenomena.

Depending on the angle in which they tell it, you hear different bits of the story and can have a clearer understanding of what actually happened. The horror, the pain, the confusion, the sadness. The screams had to be blood chilling. The type of situation where you literally feel the screams and the groans. Then coupled with everything that happened after. Truly bizarre.

    Very well done. This hits home to me because my father was involved with this mishap. He was a police officer with Miami-Dade and part of their crime scene guys (way before CSI). He and a lot of his fellow cops were helicoptered out and fingerprinted and bagged the dead passengers to identify and remove their remains. He said the whole scene was odd, which the TV movie accurately portrays. If you had 3 seats next to each other, the outside guys were dead, but the middle guy was perfectly fine. In the row behind, the middle guy is dead, but the outside guys were fine, and so forth. Crazy patterns were prevalent as to who died and who survived. Some survivors were in shock, some were singing Christmas carols, etc. Very bizarre.
