Slowhand's tech Dan Dearnley details how amp legend Howard Dumble would mod all Clapton's Fender '57 Bandmaster custom series amps.
At age 76, Eric Clapton remains a major presence in guitar. He’s touring again rather than simply resting on nearly six decades of laurels, and with Slowhand’s blessing, Dan Dearnley-the legend’s tech for a dozen years-showed us his boss’ setup before a September 21 concert at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena. Three Signature Strats, Martins, and not much else. Dig in!

I've seen Eric play through a Dumble ODS - He sounded great but I remember thinking that the amp was far too complicated for Eric! No insult but he is famous for "turning the amp up until it sounds good" - obviously it is #7...
I can't imagine that Dumble sat on his hands without adding his own take on it.
I always like the era when Denis Cornell of Southend on Sea built his amps, one of which just had a single control for Volume and absolutely no other knobs at all! Best, Pete.

I installed the Clapton mid boost to a strat in the 90s. I then realized it was basically an onboard boost pedal. So at least part of Clapton's simplicity is that he found a more complicated way to add pedals to chain by putting them inside his guitar rather than on the floor.

It boosts the signal, primarily in the midrange, which gives him a fatter lead tone. Yes, it does cause the amp to distort more because it makes the signal into the amp hotter, but it doesn't produce distortion itself, so it's not really an "overdrive" as the term is commonly used.
