Great run by such a young athlete and a big improvement on last year's times. However, it's an European record, not a world record. The WU18B is 1:57.18 held by Wang Yuan of China. No doubt that this is now within reach for Ms Gill
What they are referring to is the under 18 record. Phoebe broke a 45 year record for her age group, set by an East German in 1979, so you can look at that old record with whatever doubts you can with former Iron Curtain countries (there's little doubt that their athletes were illegally enhanced to promote the success of 'Socialist' regimes).
That time after an almost suicidal first lamp which left her on her own is extraordinary. 56/61 will become a 57/58 in a higher class race I would have thought, no problems at all.
You got the right thinking. Try half second or a second slower first lap so would be 57.06 or 57.56 to be precise and see how Phoebe does on 2nd lap then. Perhaps only marginally better but still better at this young stage to get 1.57 maybe. @@2011hwalker this is one run and yes her 400 isnt relatively that fast so she has some serious speed endurance. I hope there isnt too much pressure placed upon her, and i hope she sticks with the sport, very early days, exciting though !!!
i doubt. Usually, young runners performing at this level typically burn out especially mentally and from injuries. It wouldn't surprise me if she never breaks 155
Generational. The Women's 800 just keeps getting more and more interesting. But she did not break the Under-18 WORLD record for 800m. She broke the EUROPEAN U18 record (by almost 4 seconds!!!!!!!). The world U18 800m record is still 1:57.18, set in 1993 by Wang Yuan of China, albeit under suspicious circumstances. When Gill runs against better competition, I hope she breaks that world U18 record.
You quite often see athletes win by a stretch, but Phoebe is 17 & several of those behind her are hoping to qualify for the Olympics... but next time they won't let her go off.
You think so? Keeley Hodgkinson when 17 was running 2.03.40 At 18 was 2.01.6 At 19 was 1.55.88 then British record. So Phoebe's at 17 and 1.57.86 is exceptional. Even the other girls at 17 if they were running just over 2.00 or 2.01 is also exceptional. However, I can't see the other girls getting near Phoebe time quite yet. More like Phoebe next race is 2.00 because previously her PB was 2.01. Anyway exciting times ahead for all these girls.
@@bernardm2528 Yes, Keely was good at 17 and then improved annually... how many U18 WR holders go on to be senior champions? I'd love for Phoebe to improve as much as Keely did, but I wouldn't be so foolhardy as to predict it

Has the shoe technology made that much of a difference because it appears a whole bunch of them ran sub 2 mins which is basically Olympic final stuff.
shes been a prospect for about 4 years, already has run a 4.05 1500 this year
Second was outside two minutes, and did not set a PB.
Wow she even beat the pace maker - never seen that - incredible Phoebe
This is not a world record. The world record is 1:53.28. This is an age group record. Getting tired of every youtuber click baiting the titles to get views.
It's a junior (under 18) world record.
its really obvious that it is an age group world record says so in the description anyway, if you follow track and field you would no immediately, and if you dont , then who cares, great run,
What world record?? This is a European record for the under-18 category.
China world record we all know is fake !
Amazing...congrats....
Well done girl

Amazing runner!
Is it recognized as the world record by the institutions ?
I am sure she is very talented girl
Unreal

Very. Good. Runners. Very. Wuel. Congraduleyhhoy. Markin.
Phenomenal! Well ahead of Athing Mu at this age!!!
Yes and Keeley was just about running 2.03.40 at 17 and 1.57.51 at 19 until she did 1.55.88. However Keeley trains, particularly hard so I'm hoping Phoebe can do the same. She backed this up with 1.58.08 despite running 55sec on first lap and just able to jog last 50m. When Phoebe runs a little slower on the first lap 57 or 57.50 maybe her overall time will improve this year? British championships will be interesting to see how she does? Just not sure in a race setting with others, level with her, how she will cope?
The video is much more enjoyable if you don’t announce the winner in the thumbnail.
The commentator at the end lol ‘woh’
Lost for words
This really unbelievable !! For those who know. . .800 m
Wow!
Phoebe Gill... "from the depths of hell"
480, are we in 1990 ?
Does she go to Paris with this.
Needs to place top 3 at the British trials
She's won the UK champ. ! She go to Paris !
157th ranked woman in the 800 meters all time...she has alot of room to move up, Paris is a long shot
What did Mary Moraa and Gemma Reekie run the other day that was the same 1.57 seconds so at the moment on level terms. Forget past performances of Castor and Jamal Karovokvalova....or however you spell it?
its not a long shot, shes the 2nd fastest under 18 ever, top 8 british all time and that time would have placed her 7th in the last world championships final in 2023, shes good enough at the moment for 3rd qualifer for gb , behind 2024 indoor world champs silver medalist jemma reekie and our 3 time world + olympic silver medalist keely hodgkinson
Not sure why you think 1:57 is a world record......world record is around 1:53 since 1983
For her age.
If Phoebe makes the Olympic team in Paris she will shock the world and win gold in the 800.
I'm, not so sure about that, it may be 4 years too early for her but she'll gain a great deal of experience. There's no doubt she can push the top athletes but how will she cope with the pressure of the Olympics and the tactical experience of other racers like Moraa and Hodgkinson?
Did she shock the world and win gold...
@@Justme2018-n6j of course not, she never was but she acquitted herself well and got valuable experience. It'll take a few years but if she remains free of injury I can't see why she cannot challenge for the gold in the next Olympics.
1983 Jarmila Kratochvilova 1:53.28 untouchable 👍
Phoebe Gill a les qualités athlétiques pour aller chercher un jour ce record.
She'll be 1:54 by 2028, and she will only be 21.
Should be faster than that
@@archlutesmith nah thats not whole progression works, its not some linear thing with age. She *could*
do 1:55 but she needs serious flat speed to go under 1:54.
@@2011hwalkerAbsolutely correct. Like it took Keeley a year to break her British record of 1.55.77 down to 1.55.17 something like those times. Athletes don't run the same fast times every week. However I think this girl is also very dedicated so we could be in for some interesting times over the years? I would suggest she runs the first lap half a second slow and also 1 second slower and see what her overall times are then? As I understand it she made a mistake running 56 seconds and was meant to run something like 58 seconds. Anyway it's all good.
It wouldn't surprise me if she never breaks 155
good luck to pheebs. lots of (phe-moms) drop by the wayside esp. in women's running.
Correction: She broke the old European U18 record by 2 seconds, which is still a lot for a 2 minute race.
Yeah that Chinese record is highly, very highly, suspect. The runner who achieved that (1993 I think) subsequently vanished from the scene.
Electronic timing??
Good question 🤔
Yes
welcome Paris Olympics
Hopefully
@@Trackstaa_ Did she qualify on time?
@@zk4761I would imagine so.
Her time is good enough to win the US nationals if she was an American . No need to even check
@@zk4761 Team GB has Olympic trials.
Fantastic - but I thought it was an U18 European record rather than a world record?
The description says it's a world record for this age group.
@@architennisclickbait. It’s a European age group record. Gill ran the second fastest time ever U18.
Wow send her to the Olympics Ireland!
she is English, has a grandmother from Ireland on her mums side, guess she can choose
You quite often see athletes win by a stretch, but Phoebe is 17 & several of those behind her are hoping to qualify for the Olympics... but next time they won't let her go off.
You think so?
Keeley Hodgkinson when
17 was running 2.03.40
At 18 was 2.01.6
At 19 was 1.55.88 then British record.
I'd love for Phoebe to improve as much as Keely did, but I wouldn't be so foolhardy as to predict it
@@archie6945 Yes I agree I'm not foolhardy either as I know what can happen in athletics. Keeley is extremely dedicated and therefore has progressed very well. Whether Phoebe has the same dedication remains to be seen, although she certainly has the talent.
We're looking here at the next world record holder of the women's 800m in about 5-6 years' time!!
errr...the worlds 800m has stood for 40 years because it was clearly and unquestionably drug assisted. I doubt Phoebe can beat 1:53.3.
@@2011hwalkerYou're probably correct, but she could come close. Like this is the fastest time in 45 years, so that gives you a clue to the potential. Maybe review Keeley has a British record at 1.55.17 and then see how much faster she was at 17 years old, must be 1.17 sec faster so then that gives you 1.54. However athletics isn't like a stop watch, so we will all watch with interest. It would be good if she did half a second slower on the first lap, and also 1 second slower and see if her overall time improves??
We all thought Mu would have it by now.
@@terraflow__bryanburdo4547 We did didn't we, or the Americans thought that. Mu has the talent, but from what I understand possibly not the intense dedication. This girl has both.
Wow!!!!
she is within 3 seconds of the present world leader!
2 seconds, Keeley Hodgkinson has the world leading time this season

What are they feeding people nowadays??? This is just amazing
They must have had their Weetabix.... actually there's an interview on youtube somewhere that had Phoebe being interviewed and she said her coach concentrated more recently on nutrition and other serious aspects of her training, which explains the improvements in her best times in the recent months.
Screaming ‘gwon pheobe’ … gotta be grandma 👵
Will she run at the Olympics or she needs to go through Trials?
She won the UK 800m trials ahead of Reekie so she will be going to Paris to represent GB along with Reekie and Hodgkinson.
