    WHAT DO YOU THINK OF HOTEL BEDS? ⚠️

    • @justwhistlinpixie

      I had too many bad experiences while moving cross country. I got bedbugs in one hotel and my dog was WAY too interested in one spot on the comforter in another. The third night's place had a strong fragrance when we checked in, and then the next morning it faded to reveal that the place REEKED a weird smell that I couldn't place. I found rusty razor blades with the sugar packets in a coffee station once. Weird, nasty stuff goes on in hotels.

    • @VAwitch
      @VAwitch 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Eh - not great, but in *most* hotels, I suspect the sheets & pillowcases & probably the duvets/blankets are washed more often than 95% of homes.
      Comforters = nasty & those get folded out of the way. Same for any covers that aren't 'linens'

      Hotels gross me out, that’s why we rarely travel at all. We would usually drive straight through. In our seventies now, just to hard to do that anymore. When our kids come home I know they travel, so I get stress that they are going to bring unwanted guests with them😬

    For anyone who does not think they need to hoover their mattress: using a clean stick hoover on maximum power run it all over the mattress. You will be shocked at how much white dust is in the container. Years ago I had a demo in my house for a Kirby vacuum cleaner. The sales man hoovered my mattress, emptied the dust into an ashtray and set fire to it. The burning skin smell was utterly disgusting. I bought the hoover!

    I usually wash sheets every two weeks but I change my pillowcase about twice a week. I do wash them in hot water even though I know it's not necessary. I wash my mattress cover about every month or so. We had to have my son's apartment treated for bed bugs a few years ago. It was process of heating up the whole apartment with a huge furnace and keeping it hot for a certain amount of hours. No chemicals but they had to take some stuff out of the apartment like candles etc. It was very expensive but did the trick the first time.

    We shower pre bed and wear PJs. Pillow cases are changed weekly and sheets fortnightly. Underblanket monthly and mattress vacuumed at that same time. Pillows, without any covers, go out into the sun for as many hours as possible, at least weekly if weather permits. They dry out and fluff up so much and smell so fresh that night. Under the bed is vacuumed weekly as is the room. I don't wash pillows as the cost to use the laundromat is not far off purchasing a new pillow. Window is open all year unless weather is bad. Thanks for your sage advice as always.

    Hanging out my pillows and down comforter in the hot sun in the summer, AND hanging them outside as well on a frigid, sunny winter day is one of the best ways to freshen them in between washings. UV rays from the sun kill bacteria and viruses, and freezing temps kill off dust mites. And sheets dried outside are one of life’s little pleasures-- and I do it any time the weather cooperates.😊

    My throw blankets are used as a barrier for my dog from my comforter, so it gets washed quite often! The sanitize setting on my washer plus the Clorox laundry sanitizer in the fabric softener tray does a very good job of getting out dog smells. For my comforter, I usually take it to my local laundromat about every 6 months and use one of their large washers. It typically only takes about an hour from wash to dry. Download a show or movie on my iPad and keep myself entertained while I wait. As for the duvet cover, look up the burrito method for putting the cover back on the comforter. It’s super fast and easy!

    Someone brought bed bugs into my husband’s apartment when we were dating and they spread allllll over. We tried our best but they hitched a ride to my house. We had the entire house heat treated. That’s the most effective way and they guaranteed a year. If the bugs came back within a year, they would re treat for free. It’s expensive but worth it.
    And now I have a bed bug phobia and obsessively check every single week and have bug protectors on my mattress.

    I think our bed would horrify some people lol....I didn't even know it was a thing to not want people to sit on your bed with clothes on o.0. We have a rabbit that sleeps in our bedroom :P. He doesn't sleep on the bed or get under the top layer, but he does sometimes hop up on the top layer (a quilt) to be pet or to visit us. I don't really mind because the top of the quilt doesn't touch me. He also does not go to the bathroom on the bed -- he is litter box trained and we have a litter box on the floor at the foot of our bed that he uses.
    I wash my sheets more often now that my husband and I share a bed (we used to not be able to in our old tiny apartment). I feel like I can go a lot longer if it's just me, because I shower before bed, wear a satin night bonnet over my hair, don't use body oils (just a lightweight moisturizer that absorbs really well), and don't really sweat much. My husband is a different story....He sweats a ton, so I've had to force myself to wash them more frequently.
    I recently bought another set of sheets because that makes it a lot easier on me to just strip the dirty ones off and not necessarily launder them that same day, since we have a fresh set ready to go. I used to only wash them maybe every two weeks. That probably sounds gross to a lot of people, but as far as I'm aware of, I've never had problems with smelly sheets or dust mites or mold or anything nasty like that, so I was fine with it.

Love having a camper with my own everything. Melissa, what is your take on the new thing of not sleeping with a top sheet? • @liisaking1247

      I would say, based on comments in various online groups, that many (maybe even most) people nowadays do not use a flat sheet unless they sleep with a blanket instead of a duvet. Flat sheets seem less and less common as more people use duvets and duvet covers (because you wash the duvet cover). A lot of people ask about where to declutter their flat sheets. I usually suggest using them as curtains in the bedroom, but giving them to an animal shelter also seems popular.

    • @hello-jz6cv
      @hello-jz6cv 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don’t see and have never seen a point in the flat sheet. I sleep really hot, anything more than the comforter often makes me wake up overheated. I see no point when I can just wash the comforter.

    • @jennie9
      @jennie9 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Presumably the hotels without a top sheet wash the comforter between guests. It might actually result in cleaner linens than places that use a top sheet. But if I went to a hotel without a top sheet, I'd ask if they washed the comforter or if they forgot the top sheet.

    I clean all linens on Sundays. Everything gets stripped off the bed, washed, and I generally do an extra rinse cycle just to make sure there’s no soap residue that could irritate the skin.
    As for hotels, you get way you pay for. If you’re going for cheap, then things may not be as clean. If you fork out the money then those hotel linens best be ironed and crisp. There better be a towel rolled into the shape of a swan, and a chocolate on the pillow. Hahaha

We even requested to have the sheets changed at one hotel because we were staying there multiple days and the second set had stains too. Sometimes I think it has to do with them being small and the bleach not getting them. However, I had one pillow cover that looked like it was run-over by a truck.

    I travel with a black light, just the size of a tiny flashlight. Every hotel room I enter gets inspected with that, especially the toilet, sinks, remote control and the BED linens in the dark. I also pull up the edges of the linens to see if bedbugs are lurking. Black light will reveal all past sins or critters. 🤣. I also very nicely call ahead and give the hotel a heads up that I inspect my room with a black light. Have never had a problem after that!
    My cousin had bedbugs come to her home from a suitcase, and had to throw out furniture they got into and fumigate the entire house. Inspecting for them is a small price to pay!

    I'm picky about hotel everything & do my best to be selective about the hotels I stay in I bring my own pillow when driving as I use a special pillow. On flights I bring my silk pillow case and change it out. I do inspect what I sleep on especially around the edges of the bed, but haven't really had a problem. At home I wash all my bedding once a week including comforters & mattress protectors. In Winter I use a down comforter so wash it once a month. I have a temporpedic mattress which has a zip off protector and I vacuum it weekly and remove and wash every 2 months. I have a clothes line just for my bedding except during pollen season. I do remember when I lived at home before my mother got a dryer everything went on the clothes line and the towels here so stiff but the bedding was heaven. I grew up in Germany & we hung our comforters & pillows which were either feather or down filled out the windows every morning. Even Winter!

    One thing I don't understand is not using a top sheet if there's a duvet. That means you're right next to the duvet instead of a sheet....I sure wouldn't want to wash a duvet every week!
    It's easier to toss sheets in the washer than a duvet cover.
    Seems to me how often a person washes theirs sheets is highly personal. For some people, once a week is often enough .For others, this isn't often enough. For others, every other week is fine.
    Some medical conditions might call for frequent changing of sheets.

At the end of my stay, I throw those sheets away. Put the comforter onto the end of the bed and leave a generous tip. Twice, I forgot to bring sheets and just took the comforter off.

    I worked in a field that required travel and was therefore sleeping in hotels 5 or more days a week. For context, let me first say that as a child my family was poor, so we NEVER had the opportunity to stay in a hotel. As I got older and began making my own way in life I did begin to travel and for a time thought that there was no better experience than to go on vacation and stay in a hotel.
    Once my work required me to essentially live in a hotel during the week I began to "feel" just how filthy they were. Now I cannot or will not stay in a hotel. I just don't travel anymore. One of the last vacations I had I stayed in a mountain cabin. The cabin had a faux (synthetic) animal fur duvet on the bed which seemed relatively harmless. After night fall, we went to our (my spouse and myself) bedroom and turned on the light. As soon as we did it was as if a dawning occurred! Suddenly the deep purple duvet began to change color as an orange/red color rose up from beneath the pile of the fabric and much to my horror began to swarm around the light. The fake fur was a hiding place for thousands of ladybugs and when the light in the bedroom came on they immediately flew to the light source.
    That experience was the last straw for my days of travel. I have never gone back to that vacation hot spot, and I seriously hardly ever travel anymore - at all. This is just one of the horrors I have encountered during my travels, one of which involved coming to my room to find a snake lounging by the fireplace on the first night of my visit. SO....NO...! I do not want to venture outside a place I have cleaned, and I do not want to sleep in beds when I don't know who/what else might have been in the bed before I arrived (and may still be lingering).
    Fortunately, I can happily report that during my travels, I have not had any hitch hikers (bed bugs) return home with me and for that I am thankful.
    Edit: I have 2 indoor cats that like to sleep with me so at a minimum, I wash my bed clothes (all things on the bed) weekly...including my pillow. I've also noticed that my cats tend to stay out of my room and more specifically my bed when it is clean. Several days after freshly washing one of my cats will refuse to come into my room and neither of the 2 will get on the bed. When they start venturing back into my room and my bed, I know it's time to wash them again, even if it hasn't been a full week. 😄

Duvets, I wash every other week. A lot of people forget about the pillows. I wash them fairly regularly and fluff them/ kill germs in the dryer on high for 20 min weekly. Comforters can be taken outside and beat to get rid of dust and mites, also for some sum in between washing.

    The part of hotel beds I don't like is, the headboards, decorative pillows, and throw blankets. I usually remove the throw and decorative pillows and disinfect the headboard if it is a surface that can be wiped.
    As far as the beds in my house, I have 2 sets of sheets for each bed. When I wash the dirty set, (once a week), I can replace them right away with the 2nd set, because life happens and it may be late by time they get put in the dryer. I also wash the Duvet frequen as well. Have you seen the trick for easy duvet removal and to put it back on?
