Lothar Herbert Matthäus German pronunciation: [ˈloːtaɐ̯ maˈtɛːʊs], (born 21 March 1961 in Erlangen, West Germany)[1] is a German football manager and former player.
In 1990, he was named European Footballer of the Year and World Soccer Player of the Year after captaining West Germany to victory in the 1990 World Cup. One year later, he was also named the first ever FIFA World Player of the Year.
He has played in five World Cups (1982, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998) more than any other outfield player, and holds the record for the most World Cup matches played (25 games). He also won Euro 80, and played in Euro 84, Euro 88, and Euro 2000. In 1999, he was again voted German Footballer of the Year despite being 38 years old. He is the most capped German player of all time, retiring with a total of 150 appearances (83 of them when the team was called West Germany) and 23 goals for the German national team. Matthäus is a member of the FIFA 100 -- a list of 125 of the greatest living football players chosen by Pelé. Maradona said about Matthäus "he is the best rival I've ever had. I guess that's enough to define him" in his book Yo soy el Diego (I am Diego).
A versatile and complete player, Matthäus was renowned for his perceptive passing, positional sense, and well-timed tackling, as well as his explosive shot. During his career, he usually played as a box-to-box midfielder, although later in his career he played as a sweeper.

Best all-round footballer I've ever seen. Matthäus could easily outclass everyone from the mid eighties until his retirement maybe. He could tackle, track back, play sweeper, pass, play a last-pass and he could kick the ball as if it was a bloody rocket. If you need a man to stand up and be counted, he was the one! Fantastic footballer, thanks for this video!!!

Many critics inside Germany said that Matthäus always ducked away whenever the going got tough. I always thought this was major bulls*it. They even kept this opinion after his stellar World Cup of 1990 - arguably one of the best WCs by any German player - just because he let Andy Brehme take the penalty in the final.
@@johnjim6793 Yes it was bull...., letting Brehme take the penalty was good, because Brehme was up for it and Lothar did not feel it. It would have been silly to take it if he did not feel it, true responsibility for the team to step aside.

Probably the best all round player of all time? He could play any position in defense, sweeper, defensive midfield, box to box midfield, number 10.
And he often played most of these positions in a single game
Lothar Matthaus is one of the greatest football players......EVER!!!! He was the epitome of what "team" effort is all about. His characteristic playing and skills were were evident throughout Italia 1990. Klinsman was the finisher and Matthaus was the creator of some fantastic goals in that world cup. While many "star" players (ahem...read Marodona) were concentrating on how many more goals they were going to score....Lothar Matthaus was busy strategizing on how he was going to create opportunities for his strikers to score and help his "team" win. He was a selfless man with extreme talent, and oh not to mention.......his kicks sent the ball flying like bullets. Respect !!!!

Maradona was better than Lothar by far, he was a playmaker and a goalscorer and a leader.
@@declanobrien1283 All of that applies to Matthäus as well. Pure individual skill and effectivity as a player are two very different things. In one department Maradona is far away from Matthäus in the second they are pretty closely matched, hence why Diego praised him in his book.
i have been watching the world cup since 1974, i am a german fan, i have supported germany then and i will always germany forever. lothar matthaus is my favorite player and will always be. he is the only complete player i have ever seen!!!! ONE OF A KIND!!!!

One of the most charismatic and best Deutschland midfielders. I saw him playing upclose when they play Canada in University varsity stadium in Toronto back in June 1994, weeks before the world cup in the USA. He kindly autograph me a jersey. I adore him. Mateito Matthaus.

Took a photograph with him as a 10 year old in a meeting Room which they sent to my house. Full of bayern fc players. Little did i know i spoke to uli hoeness when i asked for matthaues. This was right after mexico 86’ in 1986 itself.

Man kann die heutige Zeit und Spielweise nicht mit damals vergleichen. Seine Solos sind beeindruckend und waren in der damaligen Zeit durch diese Kraft und Schnelligkeit (natürlich auch Wille) nicht zu bremsen. Heutzutage wäre das vermutlich auf Grund der disziplinierten taktischen Spielweisen kaum oder nur selten möglich von der "6" über das Mittelfeld bis zum Torabschluss durchzurennen. Die Räume, aus denen er Tempo aufnehmen konnte....gibt es heute nur selten. Er war ein kompletter Spieler. Die Kraft im Antritt und die Schussqualität wirken auch auf den alten Videos noch heute unerreicht. Diese kompletten Spieler sehen wir heute kaum - weil sie nicht gebraucht werden. Ein Lewandowski, Hummels, Messi,....sind auf ihren Positionen wahnsinn. Matthäus hätte vom Libero über Mittelfeld und Sturm alles spielen können, in der damaligen Zeit. Die heutigen Spieler sind spezialisierter. Er ist der Beste Deutsche Spieler der den kompletten Fußballer verkörperte. Seine Ausstrahlung auf dem Platz - wahnsinn. Er verkörperte das, was ein Kapitän mit der Binde am Arm ausmacht. Deshalb werden meiner Meinung nach viele Kapitäne von Bundesligavereinen belächelt - wenn man sie mit einem Matthäus vergleicht. Ich hätte mir so sehr gewünscht, dass er den entscheidenen 11-Meter im WM-Finale verwandelt hätte. Aber dass er nicht angetreten ist, macht diese "Maschine" auch irgendwie menschlich.

Probably one of my favourite ever players and i'm a Brit. Strange that he is seemingly really underrated outside of Germany.
In my opinion at the time of this world cup he was the best player in the world. Goal vs Yugoslavia is possibly my favourite goal although Bergkamps against Argentina in 98 was near.

LM10 was a magical player and was at the peak of his game then. A complete player playmaker dribbler two footed and an amazing shot. He was pacy like hell; easily the best player of Italia 1990. I don't understand why he was playing in a defensive position in WC86 : he was wasted marking Maradona and was much better than Felix Magath. In WC94 too he was sweeper. I stopped watching Germany since then.. Lothar could have been one of the best midfielders ever... at Zidane level and much better than the Xavis and Iniestas of the world..

Maradona is one of the best players ever, but Germany was better than Argentina at the time and overall Germany has been better as well.
Let's admit the fact that in terms of team playing and chemistry... Germany is the best that time... Their coach is a formerly Germany's best Defensive player and the game always start at the back until it reaches the front... Germany are very keen to their attack they did not pushed themselves if they think they can't make it... Argentina is good also but what's lacking is they are more on individual playing.... Peace!
