Find of a Lifetime! Metal Detecting with Struck of Luck and a Shock

  • In this episode I make a totally unexpected find in form of a stunning Roman artifact. Usually when I start metal detecting a narrow hiking trail, I have to set the bar very low. I expect to find trash, while slowly adjusting to the location.
After having touched a deep, round object I was convinced to dig the end part of a fence pole. I was literally shocked after realizing that the object in my hand was a Roman spear (head). From that moment on, each find felt like a bonus.
The area was modified, it felt already detected on top of that. I was able to make a few more finds here and there, but none of them corresponded to the first find from the Roman era (at least not the non ferrous ones).
I found a few buttons from 1700's and a pilgrimage medallion from the first half of the 1900's.
All in all, it was a memorable hunt with a shocking find. I hope you enjoyed it as well.
    Thanks for watching.

The spearhead is not roman, but much older, probably late bronze age, leaf-shaped type. Romans and even Celtic tribes before them, used iron stuff, because it is far cheaper and superior to bronze (for weapons). Really nice find, probably lost spear tip. So cool!

Congratulations MD24 on your bronze spearhead. It is not Roman but older. I found one identical to it, and it was also buried point down in the ground. In addition, there was also a bronze ring and bronze casting waste with mine. It is a religious offering that you have found and dates 1500 to 900 BC. Also called a votive offering. You'll notice the spearhead is not pointed or even sharpened. It is Celtic, but I'm not 100% certain of which tribe. You might want to return and see if anything else was buried with the spearhead as part of the offering! Best wishes and happy digging, Dave.

FMF/MD24…my guess is it’s likely Treveri or Leuci Tribe if it’s Celtic..La Tene…possibly older into the Hallstatt Period. It’s a beautiful find….dish soap in distilled water and clean gently with a toothbrush…let that dark green see the light of day.

    • @oldplucker1
      @oldplucker1 ปีที่แล้ว

The Bronze casting waste was valuable in those days. If it was smooth then that would be signs of circulation as currency. Metal objects do not get smooth in the ground, they get scratched or bent but not smoothed.
All types of available metal were used as currency or wealth storage. Even very rough cast spillage was valuable. Crude bronze bullion finger rings were probably used as portable wealth and emergency currency. 👍

I half think the spear head was so deep, and at a near vertical angle, because it had been thrust into the soil. Probably in anger, so hard that the tip come loose from the shaft. No matter the reason that it was lost, it is an exceptional find!

    Servus!

Are you sure that was a Roman/ancient spearhead??? Did you not see the "Detectoristss" Andy and Lance in England were celebrating finding a Roman spearhead when Andy, while cleaning it off and nearly soiling himself, glanced over at an iron fence and noticed the tip was broken off!! Funny as heck!! LOL I would never imagine they were that good at forging or crafting such a fine blade like that!! Awesome find, 24!!

I see that you've got some terrible, hard, rocky earth to dig in there....but...I've NEVER seen a serious relic hunter hack into the ground right on top of the signal like in this video. Are you not concerned with destroying whatever it is you're trying to dig up? .....I mean....wouldn't it make more sense to dig AROUND the artifact?
I don't get it. Just trying to wrap my mind around your technique.

Bronze is probably older than the romans but it could also be a modern ornamental brass flag pole tip as well. I hope it's not modern! The lack of a pin hole to fasten it to the shaft and lack of corrosion around the edges make me a bit suspicious however the re-enforced mid rib mean it could be legit.

    • @MaxVonStirliz

What is the rush with this guy? He gets a signal, drops to his knees and starts chopping away at the spot to find the "object" that set off the detector like it was the antidote for the poison he drank at the beginning of the video? Im calling BS on the large button coin find and the spearheaded thing?
