Big Surprise Under The Root! - Metal Detecting With Unexpected Finds

- In this episode I'm detecting an unknown forest...
It was raining when I arrived. It always is very exciting to start in an entirely new area. The assembling of the detector can't go fast enough :).
I took a shortcut and started earlier than "planed". The first coil swings revealed that the forest was already hunted by other detectorists (surprise, surprise...). The goal was to find overlooked stuff, or even a tiny spot.
Of course not every forest contains finds. Often the finds are too deep, or there was simply nothing going on. In this case I had the feeling, that some usual clues (from around 1900's) were missing. I was moving towards a spot I had in mind, but in the end I never reached it, because something else happened...
After a few occasionally finds, a "modified" area cough my eye. It looked like (industrial) traces (from the past). Paths to transport something down the hill?
After a few coil swings it was clear to me that the spot had potential and that it already must have been detected precisely (something similar to the situation in my previous video).
I then moved towards a certain part of the spot and got very lucky...
When a "very old looking" button came out of the ground, I got aware of the possibilities and surprised that it's still there. The piece of foil lying next to it could be the reason...
The soil contained relatively few iron signals (at the part where the button was found).
The next good sounding signal was located under a root. I had to be very careful, after the previous find. What followed exceeded my wildest expectations...
It was a big hammered silver coin from 1622. The obverse shows Johann II, Duke of Palatine-Zweibrücken (a big thanks to "Til Horna" from the comment section for the clarification. I was assuming, it shows Johann Georg I, elector of Saxony, which was not the case).
I don't make finds like this in places I usually detect.
The coin changed my approach (well, it was actually the button). I couldn't follow my intuition that much anymore and felt "obligated" to concentrate on this spot a little bit more. That means extracting the one or the other "questionable" (iron sounding) signal.
It also usually means "the end" to the scouting (fun) part. Not that I don't like it, but I have the feeling, that something else is still out there waiting for me to discover it, while I "got stuck" here... Metal detecting is all about psychology.
You have seen the rest. I had to skip the "deep" target. Maybe I will return some day with a shovel...
It was a very satisfying and rewarding hunt (from my perspective). It wasn't easy, but this is how it should be.

Hello Robin, thank you. I think, this was an exception (for this type of area, not the spot of course). Usually I would expect to find a few "Reichspfennig" coins and some musket balls at best.

Thank you Chris, I'm feeling better. Detecting difficult terrain seems to be the best exercise after the injury. If I could be able to bend my leg without problems with my knee, everything would be great. I hope it goes back to normal soon.

I did enjoy watching your video. I remember mine going off, loud and deep. I dug under a bush. Foe 1 1/2 feet. Finally it was loud, not tinny but too big for a coin, but I was on a mission now. Finally I started to see it. I rubbed with my glove, red, gold paint. I dug with my hands to uncover a cast iron train engine! I cleaned the roots out and the wheels still spun. She is a beauty and I keep her in a china cabinet.

The coin...looks freshly hammered. The detail on the shield is astounding for the age. His hair and the roping is fantastic. Even looks like he has a small soul patch on that sharp pointed beard. No wonder your partners partners were so happy! You know what a "helicopter mom" means? Every time I see you on a steep up or down area...my rotors start whirling. Just me, knowing you're capable and careful...yet, that nasty accident happened. Thanks for the mini mind vacation.
Hello, thank you very much for your concern :). I'm more careful these days, but when I moved into this steep area, I had to learn everything the hard way. There are potential problems that can be avoided with a little bit more "work" (like taking a wider step over a slippery tree stem etc., instead of stepping on it and hoping that "nothing happens").
Some things are just out of our control - two weeks ago I heard a cracking noise, looked up and saw a big branch falling down directly on my head. It was a "dead tree" with strong wind that day.
I started running in a split second and was able to avoid the impact (I don't know if it would have hit me, but it would be a close call).
Until now every time when I heard people "talking" about "dead trees", I always thought, yea right, how often does it happen... Now I know and hopefully can be more aware.
When I think about the beginning and all the mistakes I made, I must say that I was very, very lucky...

I would imagine in a war torn country like Germany, many buried chunks of metal are strewn throughout the ground where battles took place and most are not particularly interesting. Great coin !
Thank you Richard, unfortunately that's the case. There doesn't even have to be a battlefield near by. Many areas were bombed, you can still see craters in the woods.
One can quickly lose interest in big shallow chunks of iron. But, if you have a little bit of experience, you can tell what is going on and apply the right "strategy" for a hunt... At least most of the time :).

I love the chattiness of your detector. My Simplex also warbles away to me as I search. Am intrigued how there is no box visible, is it detachable? That will make that very light to swing, but how do you read VDU? Or is it tone only? Thanks for video!
Hello, I apologize for the late answer. Yes, you can detach the control box on this detector (the connection with the coil is wireless).
I looked at the numbers when I first bought the Deus, but after a purchase of another detector (the "Golden Mask", which has no VDI numbers), I "opened my eyes" and never looked at the numbers again.
This was the gratest experience I had. The amount of finds increased dramatically since that moment.
If I had a detector with the housing attached to the stem, I would probably put a tape over the numbers, or at least not pay attention to it.

Considering all the musket balls and buttons you found, this wood must be the one that was known as "butt naked hunters' woods" back in the days
When you find a button don't b-line away, check the area more, an old coat could have rotted away with a dozen buttons on it.
Doesnt your detector pinpoint objects, leave it over the signal for 2 or 3 seconds, it should go silent then only beep directly over the target.

Mad to think people were just adventuring through the land/nature and dropped somthing in their travels or have fought/died on that land years ago in a different time period, thing is there’s probably lots of valuable treasure in some places but it’s just hit and miss and someone years ago would of buried somthing, imagine finding a satchel of gold coins/items 🙏

Have never watched one of your videos until now. Seems to me using a pick ax/hammer to "dig with" is a sure way to potentially damage the item you're wanting to find.

That's why you have your pinpointer. Until now I never damaged anything with this pick ax, but I did with a shovel.
many people will see that as," huge holes" , most of us are barely allowed to dig with six inch digging tools,,,,not to mention damage of what you find,,,
It's hard to carry all the tools. Some times I just carry my small pick aswell. Y tried carrying my pick my shovel the pointer and of course the metal detector. It was hard. No fun. So just depends what kind of detecting you are doing that day.
That's true. When I'm scouting an area, I try to save as much weight as possible. It wouldn't be smart to carry everything, especially in steep terrain...

Scanned 47 minutes in, now glad I did!
A regular metal detector shovel would help. By the time you're done picking at the ground for your first target I would be on my 3rd or 4th using a shovel and leche tool.
The U shaped object is a cable shackle. It could also be used as a trailer pin.

They call this detector "XP Deus". The control box is there, but the connection is wireless, which means, I can place it somewhere else (it's attached to the shoulder strap of my backpack).

The reason why I mention to it about taking your time is because some finds are very fragile I mean you could have something very valuable in the ground and you start picking too hard you could actually break it or damaged in some way ground over time can corrode rust fall apart things like that otherwise keep digging my friend
