Barbieris soundscapes were an integral part of Porcupine Trees sound and made it so much better.

In a interview back in 82 barberi hated heavy metal but was a fan of progressive rock
Listening to Japan recently and you can see progressive elements in there music such a shame they split up

Great insights from a man who found his own path through music, and did it brilliantly.

Been a fan as of the first Japan album. Such a lovely down to earth person. Love all the other stuff all the guys did after Japan, so unique and underrated unfortunately.

I think I prefer Japan's final 3 albums to anything else they've done.

Love the observation of listening to what you're creating rather than seeing a graphic representation. Music is an aural art form after all. Mr Barbieri appears to be a rather wonderful human being!

Also, I would love to hear some tips from him. I know with experience that for people starting with music it is very hard to know what to do. In a sense, it is daunting at first. Even if you know how to play an instrument.

Barbieri's keyboards and sound scaping were and still are not only unique but crucial to the overall success of Porcupine Tree.
P.S. I have Planets + Persona on heavy rotation when I want something ambient these days.

A real team player, and all the while his talent was growing with Japan he came up with some superb keyboard sounds.

Great questions! Richard seems like a solid guy. I have very much enjoyed his contribution to PT and I have a couple of his solo albums.

Great to hear Richard mention The Stranglers, who despite huge commercial success in 77-79 are now massively underrated, as Japan are. Both were my favourite bands at the time. I don't mind Porcupine Tree, but I felt RB was wasted to a degree in that band- though he made them a lot more interesting than they'd have been otherwise. Never forget seeing 'Lich' with Sylvian, JBK and PT. Never got to see Japan, lifetime's regret!

Japan's heart was in progressive rock ala early Roxy.

They did! They did call each other, and Gavin. And look at the result! C/C ranks up there as Porcupine Tree's 3 best albums.
