  • Seven women filed a $70 million federal lawsuit Thursday morning accusing Dartmouth College officials of ignoring numerous complaints about sexual misconduct going back more than a decade. They claim the school didn't protect them from the professors' predatory behavior, which they say included groping, harassment, and worse. Jericka Duncan reports.

I, unfortunately, know one of those accused and have little doubt about the validity of the accusations. Regardless of whether consent was involved or not, anytime there is a power differential the more powerful should not be diddling the less powerful. It is even more egregious in an academic setting where levels of trust that form between the mentored towards the mentor should never be violated. Arrogance, hubris, and self-righteousness on the professors part is what leads to this kind of behavior.

Recent Dartmouth alum here. I graduated with a neuro degree so I actually took classes with some of the professors and had the grad students as TAs. I don’t doubt the stories against the professors, because we obtained evidence from independent investigators that we hired. But, saying that Dartmouth did nothing after they spoke up requires further proof, which is the point of their court case. So before the court decision is made, I would hope that these girls wouldn’t go on every available news program and make baseless claims. I also wonder why they’re so eager to go on TV. I didn’t hear the reason they were willing to show their faces to millions of people. Christine Ford did it to stop a predator from ascending to the Supreme Court. Few seldom recall with any fondness, the era of great newspapers when women were not even allowed
in their newsrooms, then, when forced, allowed some to write a piece or two on
subjects like home making and the raising of children. In a nutshell, women and
journalism has been one hard sell, have always had to put that something extra
into their reporting that no male can match or touch, creating a place for
themselves. Its little wonder today, whenever a news program is anchored by women,
reported largely by women, it’s a given she must be decked out in streaking
blond dyed hair, long false eyelashes and maybe pouting greasy red lips.
Conclusion, any woman in televison journalism must be dressed for the part…and let
us not forget, that on important stories and occasions, a wig…
Women in broadcast journalism; is there an app for that?

The woman @1:50 claims she drank heavily and is unsure if the sex was consensual, which to be fair could have been rape. The redheaded woman says that a professor grabbed her behind in a bar and he admitted it, the Indian woman sounds credible that she was molested, I think she is honest. One is accusing the professor of using his power against her not any kind of touching, I don't know if that should be in the same lawsuit, that seems more like something he should be fired or penalized for than a crime. The rest are harder to tell.
I would say that Americans are too comfortable, as a group not anyone in particular, being forward when there should maybe be better rules as to what should be 'on the table' and 'off the table' with regard to rules of conduct. If the rules are clearly laid out less room for ambiguity.
