VTI vs VOO - Which Is The Best Vanguard ETF Index Fund? S&P 500 Index vs Total Stock Market Index

  • VOO and VTI are two of the most popular Vanguard ETF Index Funds available to be traded on the stock market. VOO is the Vanguard S&P 500 Index Fund and VTI is the Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund. They're technically the ETF version of the Traditional Index Fund, but they essentially hold the exact same investments.
    In this video, we’re going to take a look at both of these Vanguard Index ETF Index Funds to find out what are the similarities, what are the differences, which one is better, and which one should you actually be using within something like your Roth IRA and Taxable investment accounts?

    Which one is the best Vanguard Index Fund to invest in:
    To be honest with you, they’re both great and you can’t go wrong with picking either. If you want a little exposure to those mid, small, and micro-cap companies, while still playing it safe with the majority of your money, then VTI is going to be the ETF for you.
    If you’re not interested in messing with those smaller companies and want to stick with the heavy hitters in the stock market that you know will keep you safe then go with VOO.
    And if you still don’t know then put a little bit of money into each one every time you invest.
    Not investment advice, but I can tell you that I personally hold both of them within my overall money invested. I do have more put into an S&P 500 Index fund like VOO because my 401k is one of my larger accounts… and my employer doesn’t offer something equivalent to Vanguard’s Total Stock Market Index Fund so I don’t really have a choice.
    No matter what, I think that one of these two, if not, a little bit of both, should make up a decent portion of your overall invested money to set yourself up for retirement.
    The more important thing is to just get your money invested asap, no matter what the stock market is doing, because timing is everything and WHEN you invest will determine your returns more than anything.

      You said the magic words and I’m so glad you did- that you’re aware of the portfolio overlap within your holdings. There’s nothing wrong with having portfolio overlap as long as you understand why it makes sense based on your investment goals. It sounds like you know why it makes sense for you. Nice job because many people don’t understand this and blindly hold a bunch of overlapping ETFs without a good reason 👍🏻

Please advise (if you can). Thanks

  • @jec1ny
    @jec1ny 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Meh. There's not enough difference in returns over the long run to worry about it. I use VTI. But I would not lose a minute of sleep if I were in VOO. My only point of preference would be if I were going with a two fund portfolio and skipping international stocks. Then I would definitely favor the S&P 500 because you will get a better shot at some international diversification with the large cap stock fund. But that's probably my only argument for either. If you are really hung up on which one to go with, just flip a coin. Heads or tails, you will win.

    Invested $3k into VTI today and invested $3k into VOO a couple weeks ago, looking forward for a long term investment. Possibly put $15k in each over the next years and buy other investments like VGT and VYM for better exposure

    • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nice! Really think before you start adding additional funds like VGT and VYM to your portfolio. Not saying they're terrible at all, but technically all of the stocks held within those two ETFs are already in VTI and VOO. I've seen that creating complexity within your holdings feels like a good thing to do, but it ends up hurting your overall returns and causes you to end up trading more when one of those specialty ETFs starts to underperform in the short term. Do whatever makes you feel comfortable and keep you investing for the long term, but that's my two cents

      @JoshWReX 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm just a firm believer in full diversification. Don't invest in vti and voo. Pick one. They closely follow one another, so it's almost pointless. Yea, lots of drawbacks. Not very diverse which I'm not a fan of. There's no rationale behind why it holds those limited number of stocks other than the fact they're a part of the Nasdaq. 80% of the holdings are concentrated in only 3 sectors. Those 3 sectors are at the top of the list of more volatile sectors. If you want to buy this fund then you need to understand what role it would play in your overall asset allocation and how you think it's going to get you closer to whatever financial goal you have. Glad to see you're asking the question about drawbacks instead of blindly investing in something 👍🏻.

      If you're investing for the long term (5+ years) then just ignore the price and buy on a set schedule (i.e. weekly/monthly). I remember back when VTI was trading at $117 per share (it's $233/share today) I was wondering whether or not I should wait because the price was at an "all time high" at that point. There's quite a bit of portfolio overlap since 99% of VOO's holdings are within VTI so there's technically no reason to hold them both at the same time. That being said, if holding both makes you feel better then go for it because it's not going to destroy your overall investing plan. I personally hold quite a bit of an S&P 500 fund (not VOO, but exactly like it), but that's only because a total U.S. fund isn't offered in any of my 401k accounts. For the accounts where I have more investment options I choose to invest the money into VTI because I like the broad exposure. In the end, returns for VTI and VOO are going to be extremely close because the top 500 holdings within VTI is VOO and the weighting of those 500 in VTI is pretty heavy.

    Stable, as you say. The reason to invest in VOO or VTI is diversification, however Never in history has the SP500 been so concentrated in such few mega cap companies.

      VUG only invests in growth stocks, while VTI invests in the total market. Growth stocks have outperformed value stocks in the last decade, but we don't know if that trend will continue. • @JarradMorrow
      @JarradMorrow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      With an index fund ETF don’t worry so much about the price per share like you would when buying an individual stock because it’s not as relevant. With something like a VOO you’re buying a basket of 500 different stocks with completely different price points. Some are overpriced, some are underpriced, and some are priced perfectly. The point of investing in something like a VOO is to get the average return among all 500 of those companies. Just buy the ETF on a regular basis, ignore the price per share, and move on.
      When the price per share of VOO was $340 earlier this year my irrational mind was telling me not to buy because it looked “so expensive”. I reminded myself that I shouldn’t be paying attention to price and that it’s more important to just get my money invested asap. Glad I invested that $5k at the time because the price per share is now $439 and I’ve been earning money from the dividends as well. As much as I know about investing, I still second guess myself. If you’re a reader then I highly recommend checking out The Psychology of Money. Very good book that teaches you about those sorts of things

      The only justifications for having more shares are 1) if the dividend per share is significantly greater than the other (and growth between the two is similar) and 2) if you want to use call and put options to make extra money/lower your cost basis on your shares. Since fractional shares exist, looking at the stock price is moot. Think in terms of percentages rather than dollar cost.

      Do you mean the Vanguard FTSE All-World? It’s very good and far more diversified than either S&P 500 or Total US Market Index. FTSE All-World is similar to MSCI’s AWCI, it’s the global market including emerging markets, but almost exclusively large cap and mid cap companies.
      Vanguard also has another (newer) global market ETF, the Vanguard ESG Global All Cap ETF which also includes small cap companies (hence the name). It’s based on ESG criteria and still manages to contain 5868 companies, more than the non-ESG All World at 3801. It’s weighted slightly more towards tech which can be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences.
      Personally, I’m invested in the Global All Cap ETF but again, both are really good. The S&P 500, of course, is also very good, just less diversified and almost 100% US.
