    Martin, I have followed your channel from the start. I have been amazed at the challenges you took on and achieved on your Bavaria HOLIDAY! Your calm problem solving, like dealing with a fire mid-Atlantic, and being dissmasted have always inspired me, and I am sure this is true for the rest of your viewers. The way you dealt with this situation should be taught as part of off shore training and a YM qualification. Your positive outcome has everything to do with you, not luck. I'm so happy we will see you sail again. Thank you so much for sharing and teaching us all how to cope in the face of tragedy. 👍 "So, we see how it goes!" 😊

    Delighted to see you safe and well Martin. And very gracious of you to share your experience. I have 21 years experience as Lifeboat crew in Ireland and your survival is testament to your planning, your seamanship and your composure. SV Jambo may have gone to the depths but I hope to see you and Anke on the high seas again in 2024.

    Oh no! Martin, I didn’t know about this until recently. I saw a comment on another sailing channel they said your boat sank. Then I saw this in German so just waited for the English video to get the details. So happy you’re ok. You’re my solo sailing idol… I’ve admired how calm you always are. It’s always made me think, maybe I can? We’ll see. Anyways, looking forward to watching your next chapter Captain!

    Well done Martin . I sail around the English Channel and the Biscay Coast of France single handed on a modern Dufour and I'm always aware of the problem of loosing the rudder. You obviously did a fantastic job in staying safe and being rescued. I have followed you on utube for a long time and look forward to following you in the future on your new boat. The very best of luck.

    Martin. You a remarkable fellow. I was always impressed by the attention to details you displayed in your previous videos, especially with regard to safety systems and preparation, As such, your calm and quick response to this potential disaster was no surprise. I suspect the most difficult times for you were the following hours alone in the liferaft awaiting rescue and the days onward to South Africa. Quite an experience, I'm sure. You have my respect and admiration sir. Best regards for the future.

    So glad for your levelheadedness and forward preparation: engineer at the rescue. I am so impressed with the way you quickly assessed the water ingress, grabbed bags and items not in the bags that you quickly added to the bounty of the newly floated rescue boat. I believe that by you doing the boat inflation first after you realized you had to ditch saved your life because it afforded you time to grab other necessary items before the peril of submerging became apparent. I make note of adding the survival suit per person to be in order for the next boat. You can’t live if you cannot control your temperature properly. I’ve always been surprised that the survival suites weren’t standard issue. They should be. We are more fragile than we realize temperature/water intake wise. So glad you got back to your family. Thanks for being willing to discuss this important learning experience. Be well and joyful.

    Hi Martin. Not sure if you’re still reading comments from this video, but I’ve just seen it and am very glad that you survived this incident. Sounds from your live feed comments that you were well prepared and acted quickly and decisively throughout which is to be commended. Two light hearted, but genuine questions I have are as follows. Had you seen the Robert Redford film ‘All is lost’ before your incident, if not have you seen it since? There are striking similarities between the film and your incident. Do you now have a lifetime sponsorship from Iridium Go? If not you should reach out to them, you must have helped them sell lots of units in the last few months and will continue to do so.
    Thanks for sharing your experiences, I hope you find a way to share the footage as I’d love to see your escape from Jumbo, time in the life raft and rescue by the freighter.
    Wishing you the best of luck in your future adventures.

    Glad to see you're okay and insurance paid up - I wish you luck in finding a new Jambo! Moody 44, Amel, or if you're willing to not go for a 44ft boat, a Westerly Sealord or Oceanlord would fit the bill (no skeg rudder, but Westerly being Westerly, they're built like absolute tanks). Hopefully you will take us along on your "let's go look at a boat" trips, and again, I wish you luck in finding your next boat and taking us with you on your next adventures :)

    Thak you Martin and Anka. I admire your openness. I'm also a Bavaria sailor. And as i replaced the complete housing and the lower rudder stock bearing on my old Bavaria 41 i looked at the construction of the aft end of the boat. It is a bad construction for interaction with orcas or other things that might damage the rudder. I have decided to make the aft bulkhead a watertight bulkhead and to stabilise the support for the bearing housing.
    I have also started to look into building a steel sailing yacht.... but this option is crazy expensive and I dont know if I'll pursue this option further. Even though I have purchased the plans for a yacht.
    Thanks for many good advices snd for sharing your knowledge. Im sorry for your loss. Best wishes for the future. Maybe I'll se you out there some day.

Good that nothing happened except material loss and that insurance paid up. Looking forward to follow you on next boat. Martin quite an experience and for Anke too, glad you get to fight another day. You have given me some thought as to what should be in the grab bag and priorities. What surprised me was communicating with the rescue vessel via text. I get it when they were 20 hrs away but once they were with you surely a marine handheld VHF would have been a better option. I'm assuming you had one? Don't I sound like a Monday morning quarterback. 😊
    I'm now thinking survival suits should be on my shopping list. If your temperature was 33 c and continued dropping had you fallen asleep this story could have been very different. From what you have said my thinking now is that on an ocean passage, they are pretty much essential for all crew.

    • @mjambo697
      @mjambo697  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I simply forgot the handheld VHF radio, but it was not that important at the end. But yes, would recommend taking that into the life raft as well.

    Thank you to you both for a very interesting and informative talk about Martin's experiences. As far as a new boat is concerned, you could consider some of the boats which went around the world in the Golden Globe race in 2022 and the races before that. I think there are many videos on TH-cam about the boats including one by the Austrian Michael Guggenberger (if I have his name right). I think these are GRP boats but well built. However, as you said, you may want a steel boat.

    Hallo Martin,

    Wow, I wasn't expecting that! So glad you are safe, and also that it hasn't put you off the sailing life. To be dismasted then suffer a total loss must be heart breaking. Just a couple of thoughts:
    I'm surprised your rudder got hit if it was a container, surely the keel would have been in contact first? The chances of a container missing the keel but hitting the rudder seem impossibly small.
    Skegs have their vulnerabilities too. I've heard of incidents where the skeg was ripped off leaving a gaping hole in the boat - with similarly disastrous results. I believe Amel's have water tight bulkheads forward of the rudder post (as well as in the forward sections), that seems like a very robust solution to me.
    Good luck in your search for the next Jambo!

    Wow! Very interesting. Trying to watch everything regarding this. So it was an Amel that sank? I thought that they had some waterproof compartments??

    • @mjambo697
      @mjambo697  หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, it was the Bavaria, which sank, the new boat in an Amel.

      @@mjambo697 ...well that makes more sense. Do you have a video of the sinking and what went wrong on that sailboat? Actually, I am starting to like Bavaria sailboats so I am a bit surprised to learn that it sank. But Amel is super nice.

    Glad you are OK, I think it's good to talk about it so others can learn. Do you feel spade rudders are too vulnerable for ocean crossings now? I'm conflicted.
