So I have been looking to get into the old bikes again and I have heard some issues that come about on the YZ 400/465/490. What all did you do to keep this reliable, and prevent engine destruction (ex. jetting, reinforcing parts, mods, etc) Basically I want one that I can be sure when I go in the garage it isn't gonna give me hell and when I get it to the trail it's gonna run all day (might be a lot to ask of a late 70's bike)

Anthony Spadaro well if I've learned anything about them its that you can't have a minor problem on them. you can't just be like oh it will be fine I'll take it out today and fix it before my next ride. little problems lead to big ones super quick on them. keep on top of everything and it will be fine

It's a 'F', I remember seeing a '79 250F back in the day. Back in those days Yamaha wouldn't have dreamt of building a four-stroke motocross bike. The F is just a letter they came up with to denote that particular model. It sure doesn't mean "Four Stroke" like today. Probably stands for 'Fuckin awesome' lol
