The Tyson/Spinks fight in 1988 was advertised as the biggest fight at the time. Lots of people paid $40-$80 for the Pay Per View and when it was over in 91 seconds, many demanded refunds because that was the only fight on the card. Because of that, boxing PPV started featuring several smaller fights before the big event just to give people their money's worth.

A friend of mine got the Tyson / Mavis Frazier fight on pay per view at his house. About 20 people were at this party and right as the fight was about to start the guy hosting the party decided to use the bathroom real quick & grab a beer from the fridge on the way back. By the time he got back to the tv Tyson had knocked him out in 30 seconds into the fight. He missed the whole thing and had to watch the replay to see the knockout. He was pissed he paid $45 for the fight and it only lasted 30 secs. We all chipped in a few bucks each to cover the cost of the pay per view and went on to have a good party anyway.

He was amazing to watch, but it sure hurt the pocketbook to watch pay-per-view to see a 90 second or less fight. I grew up watching boxing (got to see Frazier/Ali on closed circuit in the early days) and used to go see them live occasionally as a kid. Seeing a fight live in the arena is nothing like watching it on TV. The sonic impact of those punches on a body or head shot was incredible.

Tyson was insane. i was huge into boxing in the 80s as I was seeing my heroes retiring of old age. I grew up as a kid in the 70s and loved seeing Ali, Frazier, Norton, Foreman, etc.
Tyson was a different animal though. He was very low to the ground with a low center. He hit amazingly hard and was tenacious once he knew his opponent was in trouble. He was a terror for Pay-per-view as he ended many of his fights in the later 80s within the first round. Many people purchased a fight and it was over by the time they connected. But he was different. He hit so damn hard. He came from underneath with almost every punch, and even if prepared for it, it'd find its way to the jaw. I'm an Ali lifer, but pound for pound, Tyson was the baddest dude I've ever seen in the ring.

He went into the ring to destroy not just beat. Most boxers with that level of intensity tend to lose focus and coordination and their opponent feeds off their lack of discipline whereas Tyson was always in that state of mind. He was serene in his ferocity and his ring skills were not affected by it which must been a nightmare for his opponents.

One thing everyone forgets about the fight with Holyfield when Tyson bit his ear - he didn't just do it just because he was "unhinged" - Holyfield was repeatedly headbutting Tyson and the ref was doing nothing about it. Eventually, Tyson got frustrated and decided that if Holyfield was going to fight dirty, he would fight dirtier. Tyson's eyes were swelling up and he had a big gash (left eye I think) from the illegal tactics of Holyfield, and he had had enough.

Everyone talks about his power but his power was nothing without his quickness and vision. Before the Spinks fight it wasn't a good idea to upset Mike Tyson as one of his co-managers had passed away, was going through a divorce with Robin Givens, drove his car into a tree and Don King was trying to get his hooks into him. He was on edge, full of anger and ready to unleash it in the ring . The unfortunate victim was Michael Spinks who was petrified as you could see the fear on his face when the camera was on him as Tyson was walking to the ring ready to annihilate him, which he did in 91 seconds. An even quicker destruction job by Tyson was when he took out Marvis Frazier, son of the legendary Smokin' Joe Frazier, in 30 seconds. It was the closest thing to legalized manslaughter I've ever seen.

Back then most of his fights were on PPV and his fights were so fast that I was spending $40 for 10-90 second fights.

Then of course their was James Buster Douglas, who knocked Tyson cold in what many think is the greatest upset in boxing history. Thanks for the reaction!

Mike fought one guy who was so,e sort of criminal turned boxer in ‘86 I’d say. This guy was full of trash talk, disparaging Mike , calling him out etc. Mike didn’t take too kindly to it & beat the guy. However Mike said he could have easily knocked him out but it was more fun just beating the guy the entire fight. Then the guy tried to shoot Mike on the street & Mike ended up knocking him out bare fisted & broke his wrist doing it. I can’t remember the guys name but that would be a good video to react to.

about what you said about the magnitude of fights like this... what people dont realise is that if you missed a fight back then, it was likely youd never see it... unless you knew someone who had recorded it!

Hollyfield overwhelmingly defeated Tyson twice as he wasn't intimidated by him. Mike was so frustrated he bit off a piece of Hollyfield's ear.

Holyfield had a plan against Tyson. Unfortunately he also did sone headbutts against him that caused a cut on Mikes eyebrowe. Tyson told the referee but he didn't do anything about it. That's why Tyson was so frustrated.

For that period, Tyson was the most fearsome athlete out there. But later on Buster Douglas would knock Tyson from his throne.
