P.O.D. singer Sonny Sandoval wrote this song based on conversations and letters that he's received over the years. He was giving voice to them trying to express who they were and where they were coming from.

The church is disconnected from reality. POD and this song brings a message to the disenfranchised and to those who believe faith is whitewashed. Gone are the days of "just come to church if you want God"...this song is the real grit of Christianity...and i guarantee it has brought many to Christ....

Sonny said that he made this song in the point of view of a sinner, which is why he used the curse word. Its for sinners to relate to and draw them in.

Why is it that words, mere sounds, are considered to be evil? Only a person's heart condition can be considered evil. It's interesting because people will use words that mean exactly the same thing as a "curse word", the exact same concept, and feel morally justified but they would never dare to use a word with the exact same meaning. They can have the same mental image they would have while"cursing" but believe they are doing nothing wrong because of exchanging a few letters to make a different word.
One cannot commit evil by making a noise based on a collection of sounds that are derived from a subjective cultural language. Only by holding thoughts and committing actions that are of harmful intent to others, with the exception of self defense of course, can a person be engaged in evil.
This is just interesting to me. It's my belief that individuals acquire these aversions during formative experiences and from absorbing the culture around them. A mental response of anxiety is triggered when any given word from the collection of off limit sounds is read or heard. I know this because I did the same thing for the majority of my life and only in the past few years have I looked at it from a different perspective.

I think another part of what this song is trying to say is there is a huge disconnect in the "church" (particularly in America) between Jesus and God. The "church" screams about the forgiveness tgat Jesus offers, but they barely teach anything about the nature, holliness, righteousness or justice of God the father. That makes the true evangelist's job way harder, and it makes it look like the act of repentance does no good because people dont see this imaginary immediate improvement in their life.
I think the song is sort of relaying this imaginary conversation:
"Repenter": I was sexually abused as a child, and that turned me into a drug addict and a whore.
"Evangelist": Well those things are sins and Jesus loves you even though you have sinned and he died for you so you could have forgiveness for those sins and he can make everything okay.
"Repenter": That sounds great. Who is Jesus?
"Evangelist": He is the son of God. And once he forgives your sins, God will love you just as much as He loves Jesus.
"Repenter": Wait. Where the f**k was God when I was being sexually abused as a child? Why would he let that happen, which turned me to the things that he calls sin, and then only love me after i repent of the sins? Aren't the sins kind of His fault in the first place?
This is an over simplification, but not by much. I've had extremely similar conversations with people I was trying to witness to.
Basically, most of the time, the "church" doesnt do the gospel any favors.
And I think the song is coming against the "church", not against God.

This is the rawest of songs. Radio was afraid to play it. The organized church finally had some ammunition against P.O.D. because they said fuck. Never mind listing off a list of labels anyone can be called.
I know I am the suicidal, round in the chamber guy. Not a junkie, but if I do get prescription drugs, they are gone way faster than they should.
This song is basicly, to me, "why would jesus die to save a guy like me". The li e of "who the fuck is he", is basicly the guy telling me I am not worthy of Gods gift.

My thing is who says what’s a curse word . There is not a list of curse words in the Bible . The words people perceive as “curse words” are words that’s been passed down and someone randomly said hey we are going to use these as curse words so don’t say them it’s wrong to say them . So it goes back to tradition of people over time saying these are curse words and passing the thought of words being bad down such as churches shaming people for wearing hats or having to put on your “sundays best” for church if in reality it mattered what people wore to church people shouldn’t wear shoes into church because it’s a holy place . In my opinion words are just words and lyrics like these could put a person dealing with some of these issues on blast and be used as a ministering tool . Would I use in a praise and worship song words society had deemed “curse words” no but at the same time these words could be used to get the attention of someone struggling with a certain issue and be used to minister

A big thing for me has always been to me the attitude behind the words you say that matters if you stub your toe then say "Gosh Darn It" are you still not using the Lord's name in vein in your heart. We use many words that are derived of the words we are told not to say as better alternatives but either way they are still expletives. An expletive is an unnecessary word added to a sentence to either add filler or exclamation to it. What matters to me is the emotions behind what you say. I know some people who curse like sailors but never in any harmful or hurtful way to other people it is more just their upbringing. You will notice this especially if you go somewhere like Australia or South Africa where words we often say are curse words are not considered so there. This can also be seen just going across the pond to the UK as well.

Yeah, so super late to the party here and I'm very sorry if this has been covered. But, this song wasn't made for the two that reviewed it (should go without saying "obviously" but half won't get it). I'm a bit of a mess spiritually, but I'll say this, those words are nothing I haven't heard or said before, I don't think that everything they mentioned was "horrible" as opposed to what shall we say is 'main stream Christianity" this song tells me that the social norms within our current " Christian" system will fail us until we learn what's important, that regardless of the Circumstance, we all sin and to object otherwise reduces us to nonbelievers. Our god isn't an asshole, but the more and more I hear...if you're right.. maybe he is.

So cussing is a sin? So when Paul in the Bible when you get into the Greek tells people to basically eat shite and die, he was wrong and sinning also? In United Kingdom, I don’t even think of the F word in the same way.
Interesting reactions to the use of the word “shit” in “Shit people say to ministers“. Almost as if saying “shit” is unbiblical. It’s actually quite the opposite. Saint Paul, in his letter to the Philippians (3:8) wrote
ἀλλὰ μενοῦνγε καὶ ἡγοῦμαι πάντα ζημίαν εἶναι διὰ τὸ ὑπερέχον τῆς γνώσεως Χριστοῦ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου μου, διὃν τὰ πάντα ἐζημιώθην, καὶ ἡγοῦμαι σκύβαλα, ἵνα Χριστὸν κερδήσω…
If your Greek is a bit rusty, there’s no point in reaching for your English translation (straight from the culture that uses the euphemisms “going to the Rest Room” - I think it’s a pretty weird place to rest!, “going to the bathroom” - still looking for that bath there!…)
      Here’s what Saint Paul says:
But indeed I also regard everything to be loss on account of the surpassing knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, on account of whom I have suffered the loss of all things; and I consider them shit so that I may gain Christ…
Yep - σκύβαλα (skubala) = shit.
Not the nice excrement, dung, or poop. In Saint Paul’s day σκύβαλα/shit was used in polite conversation about as much as we use it now. He is being very vulgar.
One of the top scholarly lexicons of Greek words A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature, 3rd Edition translates σκύβαλα as “refuse”, “garbage”, “human excrement”, “crud”, and “crap”.
…I forfeited all things; and I consider them crap so that I may gain Christ…
If I quoted the scatological references, say, from Martin Luther, some would never return to this site again! In 1521, the Cardinal of Mainz said in Luther’s presence, “I know very well that without God’s grace there is nothing good in me, and that without God’s grace I am as much a piece of useless, stinking shit as anyone else, if not more.”
It sometimes can appear as if the church’s primary role is to make people prim and proper. That catechesis is about knowing which fork to use. That the body is a nuisance God is liberating us from. That clergy are employed to prevent swearing. That there are good words and bad words, good people and bad people. Good people go to church, and know how to behave properly in church, and dress properly, and only use proper words, and go to bathrooms and rest rooms.
How down-to-earth is your spirituality? How down-to-earth is your God? Would your God say “shit”? If not - what’s it doing in the Bible?!

So did you know, Paul in the Bible, when you get into the Greek, he says sh!t?
🫣😉😄 yep it’s true, and he is not the only one.
English bibles use replacement words that mean the exact same thing, but socially acceptable to us as a western society.
    The question?
“Was Paul wrong and sinning also? Maybe both? Could it be Culturally right?
    but offensive to another culture.
One can ponder all of these questions, but again, it didn’t matter in the first place, it was that God has grace and because of that, Paul out of his love for God for being forgiven ,past ,present and future, became a new person, and that’s why we don’t judge others we help each other that’s the idea.
From what I can see it’s pretty obvious, Jesus hung around with a lot of filthy mouthed people, he didn’t freak out or have a heart attack , when they were just being who they were, or they are Christians, and they cursed 🫢 ??? Yeah, and so what?
Why are we cherry picking sins to be shocked at ???!!!!! not giving the same grace for that , as we do on much harder things, this is religion!!!
I am sure Jesus wouldn’t freak out about that either, and he sure as heck did not like the Pharisees who would’ve been the ones to try to never curse, try to be perfect, prideful etc… they more interested in religious piety, Than salvations, grace, and accountability.
I’m a strong Christian and sometimes on an occasion one will slip out of my mouth in regular conversation, I didn’t even used to cuss at all when I was a kid, but who cares 🤷🏼‍♂️ if now sometimes that happens does that make me less of a Christian, not at all , a real Christian is someone who knows , that they can never live up, can’t ever be perfect, and so we need a savior, so please stop freaking out about things trivial as another Christian or even non-Christian cussing, everyone is growing in God at a different rate or doesn’t know God yet, that is the native language, so Christians grow up, there are some really horrifying things happening around us in the world, huge atrocities, there’s better things to do than going around playing the Christian police man.
I’m not saying the presenters in this video we’re doing that at all , they were very kind about it.
I’m talking about some of these comments, it’s just ridiculous, just keep looking in the mirror at yourself, and keep the finger pointed at yourself and go to God and ask for forgiveness , that should keep you busy enough, for a lifetime, It keeps me busy that’s for sure, let’s help carry each other, and rebuke rarely only if it’s in love and it’s the only option, again we are not God we are not the judge, We could never live up to deserve to be the judge.
