Restoration: Wheelbarrow

  • This is a long over due restoration for my wheelbarrow. She has been living outside in the elements for many years. The hot and cold, rain and morning frost have taken a toll on her. I've fixed the arm on her twice. The tire has fallen off at least twice , so I had to bolt her back together. Her poor, sad tire also has a slow leak. It held air long enough to do a job , but the flat would return next time I needed her help. I've had her for such a long time, I couldn't even think of just sending her to the dumps. So, I decided to give a once over. Clean her up, getting all the rust off and put on a few good coats of fresh paint. I gave her brand new arms with extra protection from Shou-Sugi-Ban (japanese way of protecting wood) on the outside and even fixed her little tire.
    Wait til you see the end result. She is a brand new wheelbarrow and a very happy one, too.
    Little info on the wheelbarrow (not Wheel Barrel):
    A wheelbarrow is a small hand-propelled vehicle, usually with just one wheel, designed to be pushed and guided by a single person using two handles at the rear, or by a sail to push the ancient wheelbarrow by wind. The term "wheelbarrow" is made of two words: "wheel" and "barrow." "Barrow" is a derivation of the Old English "bearwe" which was a device used for carrying loads.
    The wheelbarrow is designed to distribute the weight of its load between the wheel and the operator, so enabling the convenient carriage of heavier and bulkier loads than would be possible were the weight carried entirely by the operator. As such it is a second-class lever. Traditional Chinese wheelbarrows, however, had a central wheel supporting the whole load. Use of wheelbarrows is common in the construction industry and in gardening.

    Okay, I’ll admit that I wasn’t too optimistic about this vid before I clicked on it, however you nailed it my friend!!
    Very impressed with your attention to detail on so many fronts.
    The use of the camera and angles and different views - excellent.
    Sound effects - funny and right on the money.
    Didn’t see the need to bore us with endless rambling audio - perfect.
    Overall quality of the video, editing etc - superb.
    Dog - !!!! 5 stars.
    Oh and yes the wheelbarrow. An extremely well done restoration. So good in fact that I will not get to see this restoration done again in my lifetime which - sucks.
    Thanks

      Very Cool! My wheelbarrow is better and stronger then the day I bought it.... If you are going to restore yours , do yourself a favor and change out the wheel to a no flat wheel. Like this one amzn.to/3s23hTp. I didn't do it in the video but I did and love it .....no more grading the wheelbarrow and having a flat tire.

    Yours is unique having that front bumper with the 2 bolts instead of one. On the cheap wheelbarrows that's usually the failure point. Where it gets rocked upwards it tears the very end of the handles up or the metal fender itself. We bought our home 17 years ago and it came with a wheel barrow just like yours,but both handles and the tub had deteriorated. I saved the m.j etal hardware,but had ti buy a cheap wheelbarrow to do immediate work. My cheap wheelbarrow is finally dead and my brother in law just gave a really nice folded steel jackson contractor wheelbarrow that needs a tire and fender. The fender I'd salvaged all those years ago is just like yours. I've some wite oak about 6ft long and 2" thick that should make some nice handles. I will have to get me some new carriage bolts and nuts because the old ones were a different size.

    If replacing bolts, I'd use galvanized nuts and bolts and such. My experience is that the threads on plain steel get badly rusted and damaged.
    To avoid a major restoration like this, I'd recommend that people take their barrow completely apart after ten years. Prime and paint all the wood and metal. Grease the bolts when reinstalling. That would be easy work to do and not take much time.
    Too many years of neglect multiplies the work that needs to be done ---- a lot.

  • @TheRainHarvester
    @TheRainHarvester 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I brushed used motor oil on the handles underneath the barrow where it was a little rotted. Will it help prevent rot? Also on the rims.

    A very nicely done restoration project. Thanks for sharing the video. I just acquired a contractor wheelbarrow today (also blue tub!) that is in similar shape as your original. Will be putting a couple of your tricks to use on my restoration.
    Mine has an air filled (and currently flat) tire. What did you to fix your tire? Is using a never flat replacement a good idea?

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That was some of the best filming and editing I've seen on any DIY channel! Wow! Also a stylish project, interestingly made with the burned wood, totally subworthy. The one thing I did miss was more of a learning component - for example what kind of discs you were using on the angle grinder, what was the white first layer of paint, what oil did you use, and also some of your reasoning/thought process etc, is always interesting and great for learning. Cheers

    • @TheMuzShop
      @TheMuzShop  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for watching and the kind words. This video was set out to be just entertainment not a tutorial. But I would be more than happy to answer any questions. The wire wheel is a DeWalt DW4930, which really ripped through the paint. For primer I used Self-Etching Primer Rust-oleum. As for the oil that was a Penetrating rust breaker call Blasters. Burning the wooden parts was mainly to give the wood extra protection from the outdoor elements and I liked the look. There is a wood preservative called "Shou-Sugi-Ban". Look it up, its interesting.... If you have any more questions or suggestions on a topic you would like to see, email me. Thanks again and thanks for the sub👍👍

    C'mon man, the dog did nothing to earn that ride in the $1000 wheelbarrow. Flaming finishing (and oiling the handles) does seem a little over the top. But man, that wheelbarrow may outlive you at this point. Also concerned the black paint is not regulation, but a minor point at this point. GREAT JOB!!!!

    And---- oh yes. My only real criticism of this video was that the tire was not removed and the entire wheel treated for rust and refinished.
    A leading reason for wheelbarrow failure is that the tire wont stay inflated, and that's usually caused by a rusting, pitted wheel where the tire needs to make good contact.

      You maybe right. But I had a great time restoring it .. Plus those handles I put on are so much nicer than store bought. Longer and way stronger. Also I put on a solid rubber tire on it after the video, no more flats. It is now a beast!!
