I can't imagine how much if their lives have been spent playing this game to reach this level of memorization. these two guys are obviously brilliantly intelligent. the thousands of hours poured in to this is staggering. I'm grateful their able to contribute so much to charity for this

By using clever tricks to determine what they're doing/where they are. Like Pokémon cries, area music or the "thud" sound when running into walls.
Obviously memorization is involved to know what cry you hear and what area you're in.
This has been written by someone who has played A Koopas Revenge 2, a decently challenging platformer, blindfolded.
The fact that anyone can do this is absolutely ridiculous.
These guys are well spirited. It makes the run more enjoyable

I remember watching this live and it and Shen's 151 run being my intro to pokemon speedrunning. Hard to believe it's been 6 years.

They've played so many times they've memorized the maps. Then they listen to the sound effects like when they bump into things. They know abouts what part of the game they're in, so they use logic to narrow down how far apart bumps are and in what direction.
I would love to attend one of these. These guys are seriously amazing for being able to play this game blindfolded. They must have put in tons of work for this
People say they waste their time doing these speed runs but they are raising so much money for charity. They are putting their skills and talents for an amazing cause. Good for you guys. Wishing yall nothing but the best!

They just count the steps, it's a very specific route you take. They go into a little detail on this is Shenanagans 151 Run during the same year, but I guess you would find more info on pokemonspeedruns.com
Where did save/kill the animals come from?
Metroid. Near the end, you can kill or save animals. Kill them saves frames while saving them is morally sound. The donations are voting for which one happens.

they used the trainer fly glitch (usually used for mew) to spawn a missingno encounter by fighting the machop in the dojo, so that it duped the items in their inventory, so that they could merge a bunch of item stacks and fuck up the item count (look up item underflow). then you can go 255 bytes past the start of the bag's memory region and change some values in ram, like what map is connected to the current one, which is what they did, and they changed it to the final room.

Can anyone please explain the part between 29:30-30:48 (shenanagans)?
He does a glitch known as "dry item underflow". Basically, when you have x255 of an item, you can toss items to move the menu's cancel button up. He moved it up so that he only had one item, then swapped that so that he had no items, then swapped again to lose another item. This makes you have a negative amount of items. However, the game doesn't know how to have "-1 items" so instead, it underflows (unsigned value) and you'll be able to access past the cancel button. In the game's hex data, after items there is a bunch of random data. The most important data that you now have access to is the MapID. Data here is treated as items and quantities, so the MapID is 17 in the guard house. Shenanagans swapped another part of data to the MapID slot and tossed 9 so he had 118. 118 is the MapID of the Hall of Fame, so he simply set the MapID to that and walked out of the guard house to enter the hall of fame.

I tried doing this before but I kept getting trainers because the Machop guy kept using X Attack

Long story short? Red Blue and Green are VERY broken games with VERY exploitable mechanics. You can use loopholes in the programming to change your map location and the like through item underflow (aka: moving items in such a way that allows one to scroll below the cancel option)
because older games had to make more 'optimal' use of memory, so the same bytes are used for multiple purposes under the assumption that certain conditions in the game will just never be met (like flying away at the very start of a trainer battle) so if a hacker looks at the memory state while he plays he can start figuring out what conditions affect what memory stores, which effect other conditions, and then they can chain strategies or "strats" together through combinations of these memory exploits

Wie genau er funktioniert kann ich dir nicht sagen, google das eher. Es hat mit der Speicherstruktur der Spiele zusammen und wie man bestimmte Events mit den richtigen Inputs abrufen kann. Und so weit ich weiß geht es mit Rot und Blau (Gelb weiß ich nicht). Aber Blau ist leichter da das Abra weniger kostet.

You can do that in Pokémon Blue too. That's why they had to say "No save corruption" in the rules.
As awesome and as fun to watch as this is, am I the only one who thinks it seems a little... Not optimised? They seem to be taking super different routes, and at one point someone out two tackles into a Caterpie and then ran 😂 please, correct me if I'm wrong/missing something
They need specific amounts of PP on certain attacks in order to do the part where they skip brock and go to Saffron City. They explain what exactly they do in Shenanagans 151 Speedrun from the same year. Because Keizaron messed up his amount of Tackle PP in the Level 4 Rattata fight, his Brock-Skip was messed up, and that's why he had to catch a Pidgey (he even says "I can't believe I'm doing Pidgey strats blindfolded").
