I'm closing in on 70 these days. So I guess I would be considered what you refer to as an 'elder'. I'm now confined to a codo. I still do what I can to be self sufficient. No longer bending down to garden, but I got a potting table and grow in pots on it. I make jelly from the bushes I grow in my small yard. I make my own cleaning products and soaps. I have so much information to share with my kids. A couple of them are learning and slowly hanging back to their country roots. I see this as a success. There is no other life for me and I will do as much as I can as long as I can. It's a good life.

You are much more than a "regular ol' dude". Don't underestimate yourself. You most certainly do everything you can to be self-sufficient and to provide for your family. I loved this talk and how encompassing it is towards people of various backgrounds, such as both urban and rural. Great video!

Once again, a great video John. You are a very humble and honest husband and father and I truly admire you. I found your channel around 2 years ago and I subbed immediately. I go back and re-watch videos ALL the time. You are the reason I am in this community I am not trying to flatter you. I consider you a long distance best friend. So don't give me no crap! This is a great video 💚 thanks for sharing your knowledge and heart. My grandma always called their farm the "old homeplace". I wrote a blog about this and the homestead title wars that are so unnecessary. My grandma never had half the animals most people have on YT. And yet they were extremely sufficient. They had an amazing community that they had to lean on as well. Everyone helped everyone. It was the best way! We don't raise our meat either, we hunt and fish for our meat as well. So great to hear this side of the lifestyle from others!

Great video. I like to say "we were homesteaders before homesteading was cool" The Old Farmer asked me one day "what's the big deal with all these Homestead videos" Told him that's the cool thing to do now. As you said, its just life. We both grew up with gardens, food preservation & critters. Now we've lived this life for 40 yrs. Took a few years off the big garden when the kids were so busy in school & were we ever glad to get back to real food.

Homesteading is a frame of mind. You do what you can with what you have and thank God for it. Be safe brother, God Bless.

I love your chats. You are an awesome, friend, father, brother, dad and husband and mostly a great encourager, which I appreciated. I have enjoyed getting to know you and learning from your "straight talks" when you feel the urge. (he he) I hear this question all the time on YT vids and the content creators answer it. I've read lots of comments of who and who isn't a homesteader by their own opinion. However, this is what the old dictionary says about it. Homesteading is a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterized by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of foodstuffs, and it may or may not also involve the small scale production of textiles, clothing, and craftwork for household use or sale. Pursued in different ways around the world-and in different historical eras-homesteading is generally differentiated from rural village or commune living by isolation (either socially or physically) of the homestead. Use of the term in the United States dates back to the Homestead Act (1862) and before. In sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in nations formerly controlled by the British Empire, a homestead is the household compound for a single extended family. In the UK, the term 'smallholder' is the rough equivalent of 'homesteader'.
Modern homesteaders often use renewable energy options including solar electricity and wind power and some even invent DIY cars. Many also choose to plant and grow heirloom vegetables and to raise heritage livestock. Homesteading is not defined by where someone lives, such as the city or the country, but by the lifestyle choices they make.

Hello, As I live on my boat. I agree with you 200% about the simplistic self reliance from fishing. 95% of our meat is Fish we catch off the bow of the vessel daily !!! The term homesteading is quite confusing to me. Luckily I can use the phrase... on a voyage for a better tomorrow, off the grid today ! I truly respect your honesty !! All the best to you and your family from May and I here in Hong Kong !!!

*"dudeliness"*. I LOVE IT!!! I have lived enough years to know this: Labels mean NOTHING. You are making a living ... feeding your family... providing a roof over your family's head... keeping clothing on your family's back... eating a healthy diet ... etc..etc..etc... What more could anybody ask for? And WHY is it NECESSARY to distinguish a *lifestyle* these days?!? You are where God intended you to be, no matter WHERE that's AT. So ... Bloom where you are planted. And, believe me ... you ARE special! You are a child of God.
    Love and prayers

I agree with your opinion what a homestead is >> " Providing as much as you can for yourself and Family without having to get it from the store, without having to spend money on it." Being able to tend to what you can handle on a homestead is important. Over doing it by bringing to many animals or growing to many crops can be over whelming and sometimes a failure. Thanks so much for sharing John. Great tips my Friend.👍😊

    like that 2:03 *LCE* term.
I think *Homestead* became a popular term in 1860 with the Homestead Act/ Bill passing .
We always called it *Country living*. While someone in a City was City living.
Lots of different titles...from Urban Homestead, Hobby homesteader, self sustainable living, etc. lol
Much respect to you sir....learning from first hand teachers is a traditional living.

I think anyone who grew up or spent a lot of time in rural areas, especially rural Appalachia, see and/or experience this lifestyle everyday. It is just a way of life for many of us. I learned from my parents and grandparents to grow food, can and freeze food, fix things, hunt, fish, berry pick, dig herbs, make things and live a simple but rich life. Also figure out some ways to make money from your place like right now I sell rocks!!! It is hard to explain this way of life, if you have not experienced it, but you did an excellent job. Thanks!

Getting a definition of Homesteading is like getting a definition of Off Grid
You can ask 100 people what their definition is and you will get 100 different answers. No matter how one would go about it, It boils down to self-reliance

  • @MarieLynnRichard

I raise critters in my basement apartment and we enjoy a unique self-engineered lifestyle that provides a quality of life that is superb, on my part-time consulting earnings. I have no land and my target property is a weird warehouse/old garage one streets down from our 3 bedroom apartment (vertical farm potential) I homestead vicariously through people like you. I too changed my tune when I was crushed by a car. Self-reliance is ultra satisfying.

what a lot of people do not know is about==co-ops. If you find your local co-op office or look in the phone book for anything in yellowpages related to farming, gardening etc....so cities will let you pay a small fee with land to have a garden. Also ask around as some farmers and people with land will either let you raise one on their land either for free, a partial amount of your garden etc-----so do some research as one time we paid $25.00 to our city for small plot of land to raise our garden on, now I have a farm and would gladly let someone grow something here.

Being raised by people that lived through the Great Depression where the had to raise gardens and livestock, forage for greens, mushrooms, berries, nuts. Trading and bartering the probably would be considered homesteaders by today's standards they just called it life.
I'm not able to have the big garden and animals and would probably be labeled a prepper. I go to farmers markets, catch meat and veggies on sale at the grocery and I can everything I can get into a jar. I was taught this by the elders of my family and for me it is just life.

For most people, living completely separate and off-grid is not totally possible. But as best you can, country living is a healthy and patriotic alternative to being just another wage slave working away their life force in some urban city - cage. Live Free !

Not a lot of homesteading videos about Florida, That's for sure.
Most of the ones who do have WAY more $$ then we can ever dream of having.
Plus being disabled limits the amount of things I can do as well. But we try to do what we can.

I just watched part of Justin Rhodes TH-cam where he is doing an american tour of homestead farming, and he stopped at a lot of good size farms in Florida. Some were soooo cool.
