  • The two traditional styles of matcha green tea preparation are Usucha (薄茶, “thin”) and Koicha (濃茶, “thick”). Most people are likely familiar with Usucha or “thin tea”, which is what is demonstrated in this guide. Usucha is the lighter and more commonly prepared matcha green tea. If you order a matcha green tea latte, it is most likely prepared as Usucha, but now you can prepare it at home!

How to Prepare Usucha Matcha (薄茶)
    1. Sift 2 Chashaku (1 tsp/2g) of the matcha powder into the Chawan
    2. Pour 70ml at 176°F (80°C) into the Chawan
    3. Whisk the matcha in a fast W motion until a layer of delicate foam bubbles cover the surface
    4. The goal is to produce a smooth, mellow cup of matcha with umami notes throughout. Enjoy!

Sorry for the ignorance, but can sugar be added to matcha ?

There is no right or wrong way to enjoy tea since it is a matter of preference. :)
Yes! After whisking the matcha, you can add your sweetener of choice - honey, sugar, or even maple syrup.
Note that we recommend not using the matcha whisk in sweetened tea since this may damage the longevity of the delicate bamboo prongs.

is it normal to have sediment at the bottom? or I'm doing it wrong? Thanks

This is completely normal as matcha doesn't "melt" into water but is blended with it. If you see the powder immediately after whisking, it means you may need to whisk a bit longer to fully blend the matcha with the water. We recommend shifting the power to ensure that the matcha will blend smoothly~ Hope this helps!

薄茶の点て方 doesn't make sense. You might want to change that in the video to 薄茶の頂き方 or 作り方

Thank you for your suggestion! 点て方 is how to brew/prepare, while 作り方 is how to make. The nuances are very slight, however, our team felt that 点て方 captures the complexities of preparing matcha. Appreciate you taking the time to watch our video :)
