An emotional character getting angry is often not that effective at making the audience really feel the emotional weight of a scene. A character who generally keeps his emotions in check even in stressful situations where getting angry would be justified is terrifying when they get angry. Seeing someone who holds their emotions back so much lose their shit works far better at emphasising the weight of this anger. When you see an emotionally unrestrained character react violently to someone they care about being harmed, it feels less impactful because they react badly to many things. You don't get a sense of how much more angry they are. If a character who at most gives a dirty look and a few harsh but calmly spoken words to some dude crossing a line with him reacts violently when a friend is hurt, you know that they are beyond pissed, and it was definately a bad idea to piss them off to such an extent.
That is why the saying, the quiet and calm are more scary when they break that composure.
ปีที่แล้ว +7
What can be said about an overtly emotional character suddenly having a very calm composure in response to a situation where extreme anger would be justified?
I'm surprised there was no mention of Legacy when Optimus reprimands Smokescreen. He's not angry. He's just really... REALLY dissapointed, and it's actually low-key terrifying.
I feel like TFP's Optimus is like the perfect version. Calm and understanding like G1, yet is a capable fighter like the Bay films and games. Always prioritising forgiveness and reformation rather than death and retribution.
This what I've been thinking. Back when I was teen, I would read fanfiction and every author would make him seem like he can't show his emotions because he's a prime. Which I don't believe is true at all, there's clearly evidence he does. He's not emotionless, he's composed. Mainly because he has to be, I think another part has to be maturity. As you get old, you change desires. For example, maybe he doesn't like to party because he's not into it anymore.
Or maybe he never liked to party. Parties aren't for everyone. Do librarians like to party? I don't like to party either, and I'm not even a leader, and I don't think I'm emotionless...
@@Rubywing4 I’ve never liked to party myself. Id rather just spend proper one on one time with people. The times I do get invited to parties I steal all the food. Optimus can’t eat so he can’t steal the food, so he’s even more wasting his time.
@@CandyApples4ever I imagine they might have some more interesting forms of Energon at least before and after the war, to make it more enjoyable to consume rather than just taking a cube of a specific size a week to keep them going and then nothing else. Heck, maybe the bots of current peacetime, since they have apparently studied Earth culture, might have also tried to "cook" Energon in certain ways, just like how humans do it. I mean, Energon cake, right? Not sure what they would do for different tastes, maybe they can sprinkle some metals on it, maybe metals taste differently depending on the element. I can imagine gold would taste sweet like chocolate (like the Gold Bar chocolate brand), copper maybe like oranges.

Can we all talk about when Optimus got the sword and sliced the rock in half, he directly looked at the Decepticon ship and w i n k e d. He winked at the dang ship and Megatron saw it.
Optimus was always my favorite because he cares about his friends no matter what they are; humans or bots, and he is a very good friend if you know him better. He is also a very good leader. I love him and I will always will.
Optimus don´t cry, do not despair, don´t lose cool, he is a hardened warrior. But within all this heroic metal body, is a spark that feels a lot of things
@@adarkwind4712 when I wrote that comment I wasn't thinking about what Optimus would have said but now looking back on it you're right he wouldn't have said that
TFP Optimus is the best version of Optimus we ever got. I just wish he'd be more like G1 S1 Prime. But hey, Peter Cullen. And I love how Peter's Optimus voice now sounds like its so full of wisdom & kindness..... It has aged tremendously.
Optimus is one of the best heroes in fiction. After watching the video 'Superman saves Raven' I do feel obliged to put Superman here. Optimus is almost like the Superman of Transformers.
I still remember when Optimus got the star saber. After he cuts the mountain in half, you can actually see on a camera screen in Megatron’s ship, that Optimus blatantly winks. A small but enjoyable moment for Optimus.
I never understood the assumption that he lost his emotions. I always thought it was very clear that Optimus still had emotions, as the show has subtle but clear messaging that he cares deeply for others.
3 other moments which show Optimus having emotions is when: The autobots mistake him for Nemesis Prime at the base where he is visibly confused When smokescreen doesn’t know what happened to Alpha Trion, where he is visibly sad When Bumblebee gets his T-Cog back, where he has a slight smile yet one that’s still visible
One of my favorite little moments of Optimus is when he goes on the artic investigation with Arcee. Ralf asks to go but it's dangerous so Optimus offers to bring back a snow ball
I always wondered. Why does everyone say that bumblebee losing his voice is so bad even though everyone can still understand him? How do they understand him? How does Ralph understand him when no other human can?
I guess we say it's bad because of the way he lost his voice. He can still communicate, luckily, using a form of morse code. But he no longer is able to speak, laugh, scream, cry, anything. Of course the fact that Megatron ripped Bee's voice box right out of his throat after torturing him then left the young autobot for dead makes it even worse.
When I was young, what really made me realize that he really did want cybertron to live again was when he yelled as starscream left with their last chance to actually save their home.
One of my favorite aspects of this show was how much expression all the characters had, even with their body language. It's such a special nod to their individuals, and I love how their eyes added to the emotions they displayed.
Yes Optimus lost Bee. He then was filled with rage and wanted to kill Megatron. That time, he don't care about his friendship with Megatron anymore. He wants to kill him for this.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! As someone who has become more and more like Optimus (in terms of character) I've come to understand there's much MORE to him than meets the eye. I'm glad to see someone else who has seen this too :))
One of my favorite scenes in any transformers media has to be the scene where Optimus and Arcee are about to head into the Artic and Raph asks to go but Optimus says that even the extreme weather can affect them but he promises to get Raph a snowball like come on that's such a heart warming scene and it shows he really cares
Watching Orion Pax was so unsettling just cause I was used to how good Optimus was at hiding his expressions. You can read Orion through his voice, the slight changes in his face and posture, and you never could with Optimus. Orion isn't subtle, and it always catches me off guard how much you can see the difference between the two.
I always thought that Optimus Prime suffers from depression. He blames himself for the war and not only suppresses his emotions but doesn't allow himself to have fun of any kind. No parties, no jokes and no memes like Optimus believes he doesn't deserve happiness
Late comment I know but I just wanted to add my two cents. I actually agree with you that certain incarnations of Optimus do show signs of depression, the Marvel comics is the most overt with how much guilt and pain he feels on a almost daly basis, you see that prime very vulnerable and overcome by emotion quite a bit, like when Ratchet is presumed dead, he has a completely breakdown, just yelling to the computer telling him the facts because of how much the death of his friend affects him, and how he thinks that he’s failed. Many more times in the Marvel comics where we see I’m in deep introspective moments, where he is really burdened by the guilt he feels of all the Autobots that have died under his command. Other incarnations like IDW 1.0, Aligned among others also show similar elements. I think the head canon of him with depression makes Prime all the more inspiring, that he’s able to keep moving on through the pain, never giving up and inspiring others in the process, making the world and universe around him and outside him, a better place
I would love a portrayal from Cullen that's basically a combination of G1 and Prime. Soft, fun, stoic, strong, restrained yet has moments where he cuts loose. Let's get him playing basketball one minute and then beating the deceptions furiously to defend his friends the next.
In one episode where starscream escaped with the 4 locks is where I feel "Oh sh*t, Optimus is really pissed" for the first time as he scream out of frustrating defeat
many people miss this but optimus does a little wink at megatron after spliting a mountain with his star saber, the most intimidating wink in the galaxy
to be fair i think Metroplex was just doing that on his own free will to save Optimus to being gunned down like those 2 unnamed Autobots that Megatron killed
Great analysis. Also, regarding the whole "Megatron knows Optimus won't just murder him", I like how Transformers Prime tackled the whole "bad guy tells good guy to kill him, but good guy doesn't do it". That trope is honestly a little overused and tiring, especially when you sit and think "Hey, why is the bad guy just expecting the good guy to do what he tells him to do?" and I like how Transformers Prime handles that trope, as if it pokes a little fun at it. This can be seen not just with Megatron and Optimus, but also with Starscream and Arcee. Starscream: Do it. Finish me. Arcee: (procceeds to do it) Starscream: Wait. As a final note, I think we should appreciate just how expressive the animators make the characters in Transformers Prime.
I don't know how to say this but, whenever I watched TFP when I was younger, I did gather all the information that was displayed here in a video of 11 minutes. Merely by the facial expressions and visual cues in the Animation itself. For example the shot where starscream escapes with the Omega Keys. The shot that follows is optimus having a closed fist clearly under pressure, before he speaks he slowly let's it open and relaxes it. Everything that was said about Optimus his emotion and how it is reflected on the show, I always knew. But I just can't put it into words the way others can
Fun fact: In the scene where Ratchet was blaming Optimus for not killing Megatron when he had so many chances, he was also originally gonna mention how he also failed to Save Elita. But remember that time when he yelled when Starscream got away with the Keys to Vector Sigma?
(Correct me if I’m wrong it’s been a while...)
Your right. For both things, I mean. He's somewhat still that awkward clerk and he did lose his cool after Starscream got away with the keys
The only thing I would correct is the purpose of the keys. The keys starscream stole were the omega keys needed to activate the omega lock and restore Cybertron. The key to vector sigma is the item prime gives to jack before he and Megatron take on unicron

That is why the saying, the quiet and calm are more scary when they break that composure.
What can be said about an overtly emotional character suddenly having a very calm composure in response to a situation where extreme anger would be justified?
tldr "ooc is serious business" as tv tropes put it.
Consider an emotional upbeat character suddenly gets dead serious.

@@_V.Va_ Thank you.
@@Rubywing4
I’ve never liked to party myself. Id rather just spend proper one on one time with people.
The times I do get invited to parties I steal all the food. Optimus can’t eat so he can’t steal the food, so he’s even more wasting his time.
@@CandyApples4ever Optimus could probably steal the Energon goodies though. They do eat Energon, after all.
@@Rubywing4
If there are energon goodies then he can take those and then leave after an hour.
Technically he's a Prime in three rights. The two mentioned here and the third being that Orion's Spark is that of Thirteens as well.
I do hope they get to explore TFPrime's past in animated form one of these days, I always liked how Megatronus seemed destined for evil and yet was only a pawn by Maximo.
@@kennethsatria6607 I'm really surprised there's never been ANY animated series for the Primes. Especially with the Covenant seemingly like such a good premade plot for it already. And Alpha Trion notated that some of it was wrong, or was retranslated for Human Readers, so they don't even have to do a 100% adaptation.
But we also got RID after Prime so, my faith is shaken.
Yeah he’s the reincarnation of the 13th prime right?
It wasn't oh so much stated entirely. If I recall it was more like a Feeling that Alpha Trion had upon meeting young Orion.

TFP Optimus is the best version of Optimus we ever got. I just wish he'd be more like G1 S1 Prime.

Even if it looks like a kid show this show had amazing writing and character building. I love this show and I always have. A part of my childhood.

1. Harm a human or an Autobot
2. pray to Primus that you survive the encounter

Would like to know about them
Optimus is one of the best heroes in fiction.
Props to the animators for all of the subtle hints, it doesn’t speak as loud as the voice, but it adds a lot of life to the character
Optimus has emotions, he's just highly disciplined. He's a master of his emotions because of hard work and because he had to. He's a true hero.
Optimus is sad... I love how optimus prime in tfp saddest
TFP OP is the sad dad who needs hugs the most out of all the Optimus (s).
@@MissBabyForte i needs hugs optimus prime
3 other moments which show Optimus having emotions is when:
The autobots mistake him for Nemesis Prime at the base where he is visibly confused
When smokescreen doesn’t know what happened to Alpha Trion, where he is visibly sad
When Bumblebee gets his T-Cog back, where he has a slight smile yet one that’s still visible
One of my favorite little moments of Optimus is when he goes on the artic investigation with Arcee. Ralf asks to go but it's dangerous so Optimus offers to bring back a snow ball
Awkward optimus is the greatest 11:20 😂😂 in all seriousness tho, he's such an amazing leader and figure to look up too
I always wondered.
2:36 Aww. Bee was always his favourite little son😟
Yes Optimus lost Bee. He then was filled with rage and wanted to kill Megatron. That time, he don't care about his friendship with Megatron anymore. He wants to kill him for this.

Maybe it's part of maturity, the more you grow older, the more you realize the burden and maybe that's what's happening with Optimus
Megatron asking whether he will be killed or not to then get a gun pointed at his head just gets me cackling. Boi THOUGHT AND HE THOUGHT WRONG!

Optimus getting angry is basically the quiet kid wanting you to be quiet
Ratchet: "You didn't pound Megatron into scrap when you had the chance!"

Finish me.
Arcee: (procceeds to do it)
Starscream: Wait.
As a final note, I think we should appreciate just how expressive the animators make the characters in Transformers Prime.
whenever i hear Optimus Prime scream in that rage, i share Bulkhead's reaction
I don't know how to say this but, whenever I watched TFP when I was younger, I did gather all the information that was displayed here in a video of 11 minutes. Merely by the facial expressions and visual cues in the Animation itself. For example the shot where starscream escapes with the Omega Keys. The shot that follows is optimus having a closed fist clearly under pressure, before he speaks he slowly let's it open and relaxes it. Everything that was said about Optimus his emotion and how it is reflected on the show, I always knew. But I just can't put it into words the way others can
Meanwhile bayverse Optimus Prime just can’t wait to stab and rip faces of deceptions.
