    I have so many things to say about Chanel and sadly none are positive. But once upon a time I was summoned to Chanel HQ in London after a video I did made them very very unhappy. It was an experience I have never forgot.

      I agree. Back in the day I used to live and breath Chanel makeup (20 odd years ago). I also loved their nail polish. But now I avoid them entirely as there are just so many other brands out there that offer a better formula (often at a better price). Think it’s hilarious that they called you in to HQ. Hopefully it was a positive experience

    Why would they do this??? This is one of their best selling product, a holy grail, and they change it? Just add more colors to the existing formula, that’s all they needed to do!

    • @jasminblute4953
      @jasminblute4953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      I'm taking a guess that they changed the formula due to Cyclopentasiloxane. Companies are stepping back from this particular silicone. It got forbidden to some extent in the EU already (not allowed in wash-off products anymore, still allowed to some extent in leave-on products). Imo, it's very likely, that the restrictions will become more strict in the near future. Atm, the restrictions are there, because Cyclopentasiloxane is not good for the environment, once it enters the water cycle, hence it got forbidden in wash-off products like e.g. conditioners. But there is some research that says, it also might be not so good for human health.

    • @elyssaah-lee-sa2292
      @elyssaah-lee-sa2292 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jasmin Blüte so is it conclusive that this one ingredient is what *made* this product? I feel like they still could have put more effort into the final product quality if they had to omit one ingredient.

    • @jasminblute4953
      @jasminblute4953 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@elyssaah-lee-sa2292 Well, it was one of the main Ingredients. So, it makes sense to not use it again in a reformulatiom, if chances are high that this main ingredient will become forbidden in the near future. There's no use in reformulating, if you have to reformulate everything again after only a few months. More often than not, new restrictions/regulations that affect one ingredient are the reason behind reformulations. E.g. you can't just take parabens out of a product and e.g. put another preservative in. Maybe the parabens needed a certain pH and all the other ingredients also only worked well at this pH. And maybe other preservatives need a higher pH to work, which means you can't use all the other former ingredients because they won't stay stable at a higher pH. Also, maybe parabens were allowed to take up to 5% in a formulation. And the other preservative is maybe only allowed up to 1%. And you can't just replace the missing 4% with e.g. water because this again will destroy the whole formulation. That was all I was saying. There are millions of reasons to consider, when it comes to formulating a product. And sometimes, even when you carefully consider all aspects (which I'm pretty sure, Chanel does), it just happens that the new product is not anywhere near the old product. All brands have these kind of products. I loved the old formula of Soleil Tan de Chanel and break out like crazy from coconut and/or cocoa butter. You know what? I'm just not gonna buy the new version and give my money to another brand. And I'm a huge Chanel lover. But that doesn't mean, I can or have to like each and every of their products.

I've heard that their handbags aren't even made in France anymore,and the quality has gone down so bad that people are looking for older bags from decades ago. And don't get me started on the retail stores with their salepeople... Now they are only relying on the name to sell anything.....

      I feel the same about mineral oil... The key ingredient in cold creams, which have been used for generations to remove makeup, is mineral oil... Of course, but what angers me as a consumer is that they already had an expensive product (Chanel is generally expensive) that was selling just fine because it actually worked. Now, instead of making more money by adding new colours and being able to thus sell the product to more people, why just take the product and turn it into shit? I mean, the developing costs for new colours of an existing formula can‘t be higher than re-doing the whole thing?? It‘s just greed my dears, greed. They never learn. And I would like to know the secret to why generally very well sold products get discontinued or changed? Christine Williams same here. Kept wishing they’d make a smaller version. I thought I’d never go through the whole pot and it would be a waste of money. I don’t wear much makeup and avoid the sun at all costs, so a great bronzer is something I’ve been considering for a while and I was set on Chanel’s. I just turned 58 and have great skin. A cream formulation was appealing to me and by all indications, Chanel was the way to go. Not anymore. ☹️

    I’m not 100% sure but the reason of this change is not “cheaper ingredients to make more money” like some people say in the comments as the original formula contains a lot of cheap ingredients. The first ingredient of the original formula, cyclopentasiloxane (a very cheap but potentially dangerous silicone) has been banned in beauty products in Europe. Not totally illegal but it can’t represent more than 1% of the formula I think so it becomes useless to put it in. If I’m right then they didn’t really had the choice to change it and they would probably have loved to continue selling this popular product. So yeah it sucks, we can be mad at the brand, at the European Union, etc but I think it’s great that armful ingredients are not in our daily products anymore. “Un mal pour un bien” as we say in French 🤗

      You, sir, are absolutely correct. I am so glad you brought this up. "The chemicals cyclomethicone (D4) and cyclopentasiloxane (D5) will be banned from use in cosmetics as of 2020 because they have been found to be hazardous for aquatic life once the cosmetics they’re in are washed off." It's frustrating when companies make changes that seem arbitrary. Chanel is notorious for reformulating classic perfumes. This happens after ingredients are banned by IFRA. So, typically these changes happen for reasons undisclosed to the consumer, or this instance fanbase. : )

    • @maebandy
      @maebandy 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Bungeejumper1377 thanks, I figured the changes weren't simply cost equated. Inexplicably modifying the formulation of a lynchpin product when there is already such a wide profit margin built into it, wouldn't be worth the risk. So why not just make a statement in regards to the change? Because they don't want to call attention to the ingredient in other products, or other possibly restricted ingredients and products they haven't reformulated yet?

It makes it all the worse that they're using lower cost ingredients but still charging the same prices.

I wear Becca 24 Hr Foundation in Cashmere. I got this to work for me by setting that foundation and using the sigma creme blush/countour face brush. I did very little product at a time and made sure to stipple the product, not buff, per your recommendation. You have to baby this product. The ingredients tell the story & it's the"clean beauty" story. Previously the product was based on evaporating silicones (first ingredients) & a petroleum wax (ozerkite). The ozerkite is what made the product melt & blend beautifully on the skin without streaking. Then the silicones evaporated & left the silica powder with tint. Nowadays consumers hate silicones & petroleum products, so those were replaced with "natural" sounding coconut oil & other ingredients to make it perform more like the old ozerkite. The silicones were moved lower in the list. Chanel is responding to the "clean" & more "natural" market here but that doesn't always give you decent products. Hydrogenated coconut oil smells like garbage; thus the heavier fragrance to cover that. The Lsncome foundie is silicone based, but there news bronzer is oil based... Silicone & oil don't mix. I think Chanel expects you to put this on UNDER your foundie now & blot.

    Mel, do you have some alternatives that you can suggest to try? I am not so much concerned about the color selection, but really love cream bronzer.

      There’s not really anything that has the same texture as this one. Huda tantour, i liked it. The hoola stick as well

    Mel, you need the new sea bronzer in Seychelles from Tarte. I would say it’s a dupe

    Wait so are you saying they changed it? And they won’t be using the old version anymore? ☹️☹️☹️

    When I saw Chanel came out with a new travel size without coconut oil I immediately thought of Mel. I remember this video and how disappointed she was that they added coconut oil. I know she would be so excited they removed it and they finally made more shades. I miss you Mel!

    I am sooooo sad. I’ve been trying to use up bronzers and save up so I could finally buy this product. Now I won’t ☹️. Does anyone know a dupe or a different cream bronzer that is similar?

      Sonia Kasuk lighter shade is an exact dupe

    I’ll take the new one 😂 I haven’t tried the original so I have nothing to compare to. Could you return the new one and get your money back?

    They promised they would keep the formula the same 😭😭😭

    I still have the original and loved it, going 5 years strong now! Actually, I'm interested to get my hands on the new one, as I have no issues with coconut oil and I tend to not wear any coverage anyways. It's a deeper shade as well--so would it be okay if I snag it from you? Thanks in advance 😜

    Hey Mel I am darker so sadly this won't work out. I'm really wanting to try out the new fenty bronzers and cream blushes. I do have a question, how can a small TH-camr get out there? What would you recommend?

    I'm so mad. I'll never have a chance to own the original. I asked the Nordstrom worker if the formula would change and she said no. What a lie

      I don't even blam representatives anymore for something a company does. They don't tell agents anything and don't find out a lot of things until the product comes out and a customer complains about something. The company basically hands the agent to the customer to be chewed out.

      Firefoxwaffles I didn’t own it either - was trying to use what I have and buy less - welp, there goes that plan

      I don’t think it’s the Nordstrom reps fault but Chanel not sharing the right information 😓

      @@melthompson2856 My comment was very aggressively angry, sorry about that, I'm not mad at the rep at all, my anger is entirely directed at Chanel for lying to me

    Coconut oil makes it so I'll never be able to use this! It makes me break out so horribly. Ohmygoshhhh. It's so bad for my skin. How sad!

    Really Chanel?!? If it’s not broke don’t “fix” it! This was my holy grail used it forever product and now I’ll never replenish it when I run out! Sad. 🤭😢

    I would be interested. I have darker skin and have never been able to try the original. Since the new one is darker it looks dark enough to actually show up
