NORTHERN IRELAND: CATHOLICS ATTEMPT TO BLOCK PARADE BY ORANGEMEN

  • (22 Jun 1996) English/Nat
    Roman Catholic protesters in Northern Ireland have clashed with police as they tried to block a parade through Belfast by Protestant Orangemen.
    Several people were reportedly injured, including leading Sinn Fein member Gerry Kelly.
    Earlier, police had overruled objections by residents in the predominantly Catholic area of Belfast and allowed the parade to go ahead.
    It was a sit-down protest that sparked the clashes between Republican Roman Catholics and the police Friday.
    The protesters started assembling at the junction of Cliftonville Road and Antrim Road in north Belfast several hours before the planned march by Protestant Orangemen.
    But their plans to disrupt the march were scotched by riot police who moved in on the protesters and forcibly removed them.
    Many demonstrators were arrested and a number were reportedly injured, including leading Sinn Fein member Gerry Kelly.
    Around 15-hundred police officers - many in riot gear - were on duty to try to keep the peace.
    But they became targets themselves - protesters chucked bricks and bottles at police armoured cars meant to separate the angry locals from the marchers.
    The Orangemen -- the name given to Ireland's main Protestant fraternal order -- congregated at the Orange County Hall later in the evening to begin their march.
    They were undeterred by pleas not to march through predominantly Catholic neighbourhoods.
    SOUNDBITE:
    I think we have to keep our traditional parades going because as you can see it's happening all over this province since the so-called peace come in a couple of years ago. There hasn't been peace because what they're doing now is trying to put the Protestant culture off the road.
    SUPER CAPTION: Robert Saulters, Belfast County Grand Master
    Each summer, the marches that culminate in the big Orangemen parade on 12 July spark sectarian rumblings.
    The parades take the Protestants through the heart of a number of Catholic neighbourhoods.
    And for the Catholic residents, the marches underscore a sense of second-class citizenship in the Protestant-majority province.
    SOUNDBITE:
    The Orange Order seems a sectarian organisation, it's an anti-Catholic organisation and it's going to be marching through a Catholic district. Nobody knows who gave these people the God-given right to do this. Our communities are going to be under siege, people are going to be barricaded in their houses, they let these outsiders come and march there. We just don't accept that it's necessary.
    SUPER CAPTION: John Flemming, spokesperson for the Cliftonville-Antrim Road Concerned Residents Association
    This year, police had overruled objections by Catholic residents and allowed Friday's march to go ahead.
    And despite the skirmishes, the Orangemen were able to complete their march along their customary route.
    Protestant supporters of all ages lined the road - but the pall of violence hung heavy in the background.

Catholics were discriminated against in all walks of life. Catholics didn't have a vote yet some landowning protestants had up to 5 votes. All we wanted was one man one vote but the protestants didn't want us to be have them. The police force was 99% protestant so catholics were even discriminated against by the police force. The basic definition of being a bigot is more or less not agreeing with others opinions, which clearly you don't agree with ours. Besides this the main reason that there is any hatred is because this is a Majority unionist state yet the nationalists always seem to get their way, be it small issues or major issues it slowly gets to the point that people are going to retaliate and spew hatred to the other side, not always justified but understandable in some ways. The fact is the hatred is strong on both sides both are just as bad as each other. And as for being 'anti-irish' no that would suggest that we hate all Irish people which is not the case. The fact is we are anti republcan and anti nationalist that is the difference.

      It’s nothing to do with religion, it’s irish nationalism versus those who want the north united with the UK. Most unionists are descendants of those from Great Britain, they settled in ireland by force and took slaughtered and plundered from the more vulnerable. Hence most unionists are protestants. It’s a way of determining someone’s heritage a scottish or english heritage versus an irish heritage. Irish are almost always catholic and vice versa

Also, I'd suggest using the Soylent Green method to remove the sit down bunch, those tippers are just the thing...:-)

      Let's suppose a man hasn't bothered with Christ his whole life. Then as he is lying in hospital dying, a chaplain comes and talk to him about the need to be saved. That man thankfully puts his trust in Christ and dies a few days later. According to your view, that man will be condemned to Hell. In reality, this man will be passed safely over into Heaven.

    Westminster should take back the descendants of the planters .
    It’s very unfair on them ( planters) they haven’t
    Settled or integrated into Irish society.
    They have had generation after generation refusing to be part of the land where they were born.
    I think it’s safe to say that they won’t ever settle now and would be better back in their home land in northern England and southern Scotland.
    I’m sure there would be a great big orange welcome there for them for a day or two .

    ok it needs a miracle but marching season could be a massive plus for NI, a contest of Bands from both sides instead of a giant wind up exercise, why? could be a huge tourist attraction, a celebration of peace. Look at where the Americans have taken it.

    • @noodlyappendage6729
      @noodlyappendage6729 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bands across Ireland already compete. However make sure to remember that there is a difference between Catholics and Republicans. Many Catholics support remaining in the UK. Before ‘The Troubles’ many Catholics used to come out and watch the bands. The William King Memorial Band from Londonderry are considered to be the best in Ireland. And probably the best in the UK.

    • @mc2594
      @mc2594 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      looking back I think my comment was based on removing a flash point where both could accept themselves in others, I also think the Walls should be removed, all these things hold onto conflict and divide what essentially is little difference but the little difference could also be a celebration and competition that will draw crowds from the mainland and beyond to watch these fabulous sights and sounds rather than just each other.
      If anyone thinks that's totally dumb fair enough but it's strange how the men of war accepted each other but ordinary folk cannot, peace came from one brief moment of acceptance that both have the birth right to be there, I just think a few hours of the same every summer would be less hassle and grief and maybe that's only visible from the mainland where no one knows or cares which of the two religions anyone is because those traditions have gone and there isn't any walls.
      Having said that I have no idea what I meant by: _look at where the Americans have taken it._
      if it comes back to me I'll mention it.

    • @noodlyappendage6729
      @noodlyappendage6729 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mc2594 what you meant by that was the marching bands in the USA. Almost every college/university in the USA has one. They are a very positive thing. They are also a positive thing in the UK. The problem in Northern Ireland is that hardcore Irish Republicans activists exaggerate the problems of peaceful bands parading and come out en masse to be over confrontational with them. In many cases these bands have paraded through the same route for 200 years and after hardcore Irish Republican activists have moved in these parades are a problem all of a sudden. The UK’s streets belong to all UK citizens and all UK citizens should be able to parade. Our streets don’t only belong to hardcore Irish Republican activists.

    • @noodlyappendage6729
      @noodlyappendage6729 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@mc2594 Really what we are talking about is Irish Republicanism not Irish Catholics. Although there is a cross over there have been many Irish Catholic Unionists in the past. Charles Arthur Russell, Baron Russell of Killowen is just one. And there are many Irish Catholic Unionists in the present like Stephen McCarthy who is standing as a UUP candidate in South Belfast. The UK from its inception was a multinational and multicultural state as it was a country made up of countries. England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland and now Northern Ireland. As we know thousand of Irish Catholics have served in Her Majesties Armed forces and many still do. Those Catholics play in their respective military marching bands. Maybe Northern Ireland just needs a civilian Catholic Unionist marching band. There are loads of Catholic Unionists in Northern Ireland in order to make that happen. ✌️
