    I grew up in Florida, and I’m white. We learned about slavery when I was in school. Yes it was uncomfortable and heartbreaking, but the truth is uncomfortable. It is necessary to learn from the ugliness of our past. It strikes me that DeSantis is essentially trying to spin slavery as “not that bad”, or god forbid, attempting to justify it as a practice. Absolutely despicable.

      Agreed. On top learning about Slavery, in my high school history class we also learned about how the Irish, Polish, and other foreign immigrants were treated in NYC back in the early 1800's (hint: they were treated and called something akin to 'trash'). So glad I had a good history teacher that was allowed to cover many different angles and include as many races of people as possible. It showed how much we are all alike, not how we're different.

      It was rare for any teacher in any state to teach the whole ugly truth about slavery when I was growing up. You had to go to college for that, and even then only if you happened to take the right course or attend the right college. All they taught us was Columbus discovered America and the history of Europe. The history taught at my high school was trash. So lifelong learning is something that I value. Thank goodness my kids learned more than I did (and that they didn't go to school in Florida).

    I ended up in FL 8 years ago so I’m very familiar with DeSantis unfortunately. He will never admit any wrongdoing or bad decisions. It’s always someone else’s fault. He’s a cowardly little punk. I’m 54 and what I wasn’t taught in school about the atrocities of slavery - which was a lot - I read about and learned on my own & from friends. It never made me hate myself or hate the country. It made me hate what has happened and what people allowed, and still allow, in society. And it makes me want to do whatever I can to contribute to a better society. It’s sad that DeSantis, his fans & people like him have never actually thought about what it would be like to be OWNED by another person. Zero empathy. There’s something very wrong and very dangerous about not being capable of putting yourself in someone else’s shoes.

All slaves got freed. That is where the 7-year indenture rule of England and the American colonies originated. And of course, while Paul at one point spoke of slaves being obedient, he later said, there is neither slave nor free, all being equal in Christ.
      Desantis is a coward demanding something and then not saying he commanded it. Desantis is also the worst kind of liar. First, he says wokeness is wrong, critical race theory is wrong, the insistence that Black people were denied rights, denied recognition for achievements, denied opportunities. He wanted no instruction about great things that had been suppressed.
      Then, he turned right around, to have Black achievements recognized, only as a pathway to saying whites made it possible. That is classic plantation mentality. Tell a truth just to tell a big lie.
      That is just like the denial of CRT. These same bigots will say Black people are racist, "trying to replace whites _in spots whites always held."_ Notice how, in their complaint, they actually _admit_ CRT.
      A bigot is a bigot because he is selfish, ignorant, and dishonest.
      What is worse, Desantis is of Italian descent, and apparently ignored the history where Italians were not regarded as real whites or real Americans. They got hurt by the D word, as Black people got hurt by the N word.

She had to pick up food from the back of restaurants while her friends could go inside. She experienced Jim Crow. Slavery, Jim Crow, Red Lining still impacts black communities. After emancipation a bunch of laws were put in to effect such as loitering because of the clause that prisoners can be used for slave labor. That clause still exists. I love my country. I have faith in the people white, brown, black, blue but, my heart is heavy today knowing that young people are being learning this. It’s like spitting in the face of the black community. In the 80s, I was taught Japanese internment camps were good, but I knew they were not, and educated myself. So between me and our family, my children learned about these types of things before kindergarten, and they have much more empathy and a better moral compass than their peers. If people didn't like what Disney did they could vote with their pocketbooks but getting the government involved was wrong. Using our tax dollars to pick up migrants from Tx on a chartered flights to send them to NYC was a publicity stunt using our tax dollars. The bill that was bipartisan to fix the border Ron and republicans vetoed as it wasn't going to make Republicans look good to pass by Democrats. Immigration is the big platform of this party. Well 🇨🇦 Helped 🇬🇧 The whole reason the USA had slavery in the first place was because the British brought them here before we were a free country the only difference is Americans aren’t into the king and queen. The problem of slavery in the United States is 100% Englands fault. As soon as we became independent from England we fought a few more wars to end the Atlantic slave trade and finally end slavery in the south. When we sent our sailors to the Barbary coast to force the slave catchers into closing up shop in 1801 the English decided to supply the barbary pirates with weapons to fight against the abolition of the Atlantic slave trade. The coalition of USA Sweden and Sicily ended up bringing down the Atlantic slave trade with the help of greek mercenaries that were former barbary slaves themselves. The moral of the story is slavery in the United States is 100% 🇬🇧 fault historically speaking had we not gained our independence there would probably still be slavery here.

      Not only that, but they maintain the 20 dollar bill with Andrew Jackson on it, still racially segregate but use financial strata of society to do it (they keep all the programs and means that amplify family financial differences to keep groups segregated), keep trying to add the whitewashing into school books -- and all of this well into the 21st century.

It was utterly abominable because of how horribly they treated our ancestors...the forced SAs of both men and women to ruin theur ties to a specific country in Africa, the selling and exploitation of children, the overworking of female slaves to the point where their muscles separated from their bones, using children as foot warmers, performing surgeries on women without anesthesia. I remember one professor saying if it heard that nonsense out of anyone in the class, it was an automatic "F" for the student for the semester. I was absolutely delighted. Yeah I remember hearing that too in high school lol. It's so wild. When I went to college is when I learned differently. Which truly makes me really consider the fact that the feds have steadily reduced education funding, thereby creating a growing financial barrier to attending to college. I know it's entering "tin foil hat" territory but I can't help but notice that just as we collectively became more educated, they started gutting education spending. Then starting in the bush administration, suddenly the way we are taught in schools started changing. This is just a continuation of a 15+ year movement to alter class content.

    • @ashleybrown6299
      @ashleybrown6299 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Hawk7886 the foundation of the states' rights argument was based on slavery though. Slave states knew that if it was banned, their primary source of income would be drastically reduced, thereby giving the federal gov't a stronger foothold. Today, former slave states rely heavily on funding given by the federal government, which comes with strings attached. It should come as no surprise that former slave states consistently have some of the highest rates of poverty in the US by pop size. Then of course, you have to add in the fact that they were in absolute fear of the reality that former slaves would be able to participate in the democratic process, thereby upsetting the balance of political power. Wouldn't you be quaking in your boots if the very people you oppressed suddenly can kick you out of power? Today, the US farming industry relies heaaavvvviillly on labor from undocumented immigrants, which is the equivalent to slavery because of how low the wages are and the lack of benefits. If they paid real wages, strawberries would be $10+ rather than $4 (Ga prices). Funny enough southern GOP states were very strong advocates against DACA and other methods of legitimizing undocumented immigrants. Why? Because of the very same reasons they fought against banning slavery. The more you know.

Because of the South's agrarian culture, the southern states didn't have the population of white laborers needed to support major industry. So unable to refine their own agricultural products, they sold them to refineries in the North. . Hundreds of thousands of white men worked in them and provided for their wives and children by processing agricultural products planted, maintained, and harvested by black slaves.
      Thus, millions of whites in the North were supported by the cotton industries in the northern states. And the taxes produced by overseas sales, enriched the nation. In the 1800s, the cotton industry became to the US as the oil industry is to Saudi Arabia. It was that mass influx of cash that fueled industrialization and built the US navy with which he US established global power.
