There's another interpretation: Pence didn't trust the secret service after what Trump had said that day.
My thoughts exactly!!!
People are still desperately trying to play this down and keep it all within the realms of "a polite coup" even though we know there were assassination plots, explosives planted, gallows erected and far-right terror groups openly planning to transport weapons across the river.
Even now, after everything we know, people are still dancing around the obvious brutality of it all. Chris just alludes to the notion that the Secret Service was heavily involved in a coup attempt and they were just going to "move Pence out of the way".
Some of us understand that it was vastly more violent than this. They weren't planning to "move" Pence, they were planning to "remove" Pence entirely.

This was most definitely an attempted overthrow of the now-certified outcome of the election by the then-Commander in Chief of the US military. That fits the definition of a coup.. whether he used all of the weapons at his disposal or not.

How odd that all of the secret service communications were deleted in such a way that we cannot know what they were actually doing.
I don't know that story, but assuming it's true it makes sense. That was an extreme event and probably triggered some extreme protocols that are best kept secret so that they can be used effectively again.

And quite convenient for the Secret Service agents involved. And we still don't know what the agents involved testified to... CYA to the extreme.

The goal was to prevent the electoral votes from being counted as required by the Constitution. Removing the vice president to an "undisclosed location" for "his own protection" and keeping him there for an extensive period would accomplish that.

Pence must know what they were planning to do, meaning that he was aware of the plan to illegally overturn the election results.
By remaining silent on the matter (and not giving over what he knows or has of their plans to the Committee) Pence is being, in effect, an accomplice to the crime.
He may have done the correct thing on that fateful day. But let's not forget that he has since done nothing to stop the Big Lie from being spread. In fact he's publicly spoken about trying to re-establish a connection with Trump.
No - It's clear to me that Pence is still guilty of being an accomplice. In fact the longer he remains silent and does not speak out against Trump and his co-conspirators, the less respect he deserves from anyone. Because what he's doing now is shielding Trump and the others.

Garland sent Timothy McVeigh to his death, and Terry Nichols was sentenced to life in prison without parole. We haven't heard anything because that's the way Garland wants it. He has, however, given clues, and the most recent one was the state of New York asked for some documents on trump and DOJ denied them, stating it would affect a current investigation.
And yet, he is very silent currently. He still holds a ton of info that would help the American people and says nothing to protect our democracy, now, when it is needed most.

The House of Representatives have to approve the ballots of the presidential election so by attacking the capital that would in Trumps eyes stop the counting of the ballots and he would stay in office. Treason is an act against the country so attacking the capital is attacking his own country.
If we make it another hundred years, this is going to look insane. I truly hope we get our education systems overhauled because this part of history will be so confusing, it'll cause the children to cry.

My first thought, when I heard what Pence said,about not leaving: was that he didn't trust them and was afraid they would take him,God knows where Pence used commonsense, because he knew what they were planning and refusing to play their game, he knew that they were ready and willing to make him disappear.He knew who they were, what they were planning and the length they were willing to go to keep the orange man in power. In this case, I will say:"thank you Mike Pence".
This reminds me of the BBC version of Robert Graves's "Claudius" in the episode where Caligula's assassination makes Claudius his successor as Emperor. When the Senate seems to object, he tells them it wasn't his idea, complain to the armed men behind him, the Praetorian Guard.
In this instance Pence seems to have understood where his loyalty properly lay.
Except that Caligula was dead, and it seems the boss of the Secret Service guard may have been a supporter of the Traitor Trump.

I bet that in the coup planning Pence was told hey look, you will leave capt during siege and let Grassley certify the fake electors. But decided nope he wasn’t going to do this. For the certifying election was his last VP act, and had more power at that time than Trump at that moment.
Knowing there were Gallows set up out there & hearing the chants of Hang Pence it seems is enough to stop him from leaving. Add that & his possible distrust for Trumps secret service on to his expressed reasoning & it seems like a clear choice to stay. I can't imagine any VP being betrayed by their boss in broad daylight on every news station globally not being weary.

I have never held Pence in very high regard - but it turns out that his actions of standing up for what was right (according to the Constitution) played a critical role in upholding our Democracy. Regardless of other differences of opinion and political perspective - Thank you Mike Pence.

I was going to voice this exact sentiment. Thank you, Steven. As a liberal in a state adjoining Indiana, I was aware of Mike Pence long before he became VP. He persecuted the LGBTQ community in his state, pushed for religion where it did not belong. Thankfully, when it came to upholding the US Constitution and his oath of office against the bullying of the Trumpists, Mr. Pence deserves full credit for following the law and protecting our democratic form of government.

I know there's a deadline on counting them, don't recall what it is or what happens then, maybe goes to House of Representatives, which is what Trump wanted bc Repubs have majority there. I'm not surprised some people think, or maybe Pence did, too, that his life was in danger if he let SS take him away from the Capitol.

Watching the real videos and watching the under oath testimonies in the January 6 committee hearings has shown that was a violent Insurrection. I think they were just trying to protect him. Their job isn’t to fight threats, it’s to remove the diplomat from the dangerous situation. Getting him out of there actually makes a lot of sense given there were hundreds of trespassers in the building. Whatever, it worked out.

I remember reading that he did not know who was driving the car. He did not trust he was not being kidnapped. That makes more sense to me.

I have never heard the car story until now.
I also never heard driver story before. Not trusting of most stories.
Two things can be true at the same time. He did not want anyone seeing his motorcade leaving, as that shows weakness- as though the rioters won. And he was fearful and didn't trust his security, or what may happen to all of them if they left.
I personally think the driver story is a fabrication.
Pence was smart enough to see what was happening, and knew what it would look like had he left, and completed his constitutional duty.

I can't remember the exact words, but when announcing the confirmation of the ballots he did put in a twist to make clear that these were the real ballots or something like that.

He didn't leave because he didn't trust the secret service.
There is an even darker reason Pence might have refused to go. Trump had made it clear that if Pence failed him, he would get even. Getting in a car sent by the leader of a coup, a leader who is angry at you already, might be a one way trip. At least at the Capital he wouldn't be alone. (He couldn't know who Trump had corrupted, so feared the worst.)
Anyway, it's just another thought.
This is probably the best explanation for why he would use those exact words. I’ve used them myself when I’ve felt threatened.
