I'm so happy to hear people talking about my hometown!!! Few more things to add: In general, the train announcer actually tells you when there are significant tourist attractions for particular stations. Usually it means that the attractions are close by or you can get a shuttle to it. This is especially important for Shilin Night Market because of the potential to get off at the wrong station (although it's literally 1 stop away, and you can still catch a shuttle to the market even if you get off at Shilin instead of Jiantan). The announcer will say this, so pay attention! Also, it is possible to go negative on your card. So if you only have, say, 5 NT on it but you want to take a 30 NT trip, you can still do it, but you'll end up with negative 25 NT that will be taken off the next time you reload. The limit seemed to be between negative 50 to 75, since that's what happened to me once when I tried to go negative on a Taoyuan airport MRT trip: I knew I'd go negative to minus 75, and the turnstile at Taipei Main Station didn't let me out that time, so I had to recharge at the info booth there. Taipei main station also has a few cab stations. There is a main one outside of the west entrance (or east, I always get these confused haha), and one underground near the Taoyuan airport metro platform. If you want a cab, go there, since it's technically illegal for cabbies to pick people up anywhere else around the station (although people still do that). For long distance bus, you have to go across the street for the Taipei Main Bus Station (or something; never taken one of those before), but there are municipal bus stops on the street level. Betel nut is a stimulant fruit that you can chew, but don't swallow it! It tastes pretty terrible, but holy shit it really really perks you up! When I tried it, it gave me a massive headache like I've just injected 5 espresso shots right into my blood. It is very commonly used by cabbies and truckers who need to stay awake; I once met a fishmonger who stayed awake for 3 days straight by chewing on betel nuts. It is commonly banned because of the blood-red juice it produces, which people would spit out. You can find the unsightly red stains on pavements in rural/less developed areas or on some roadsides.
Watched like 100 Taipei MRT Videos. You have the best and easiest one to understand and follow. Appreciate it. Wife is freaking out about the MRT system and now she isn't after watching your video.
This is the best guide to MRT I have seen, pointing out exactly the interest points at each specific stop is very helpful. I'll be visiting Taiwan later this year and these videos are invaluable, much better than all the other Taiwan guide videos.
Cool. Seems very relaxing and convenient, unlike, other mass transit options around the world. Taipei is a must; should I have the opportunity. Thanks, John!
Joseph Gallagher yes Joseph, Taipei is very convenient with one of the most reliable public transit systems in the world! Hope you find the time to visit!

Ariane P thanks so much! Don't worry too much! If you are in busy tourist spots there will be English speakers. This happened to me a lot when I first visited Taipei and Taiwan.
Which is the best district to keep my base. I have an eight year old child with me. I need to be close to some attractions, street food and eateries. Please advise.
Thanks John & guess we should've watched this video before our recent summer trip, as we paid cash for all MRT and missed out on 20% discount via IC card, but it's still cheaper than Vancouver Canada, where one stop will cost $2.85 CAD during rush hour.
Frank Yu that's too bad! Yes the MRT fairs are quite cheap in Taipei compared with Skytrain in Vancouver. Average trip with Easycard discount is around $USD 50 cents!
So easy to get around Taipei. The system is user-friendly and the gate operators all speak English. If you look confused people will offer to help you.

I bought an EasyCard summer of last year in a trip to Taiwan and we are planning to head back again summer of this year so will my card still work then or would it be expired by that time? Thank you! Loved this video, it was very very useful 😊
Thanks very much! Your card should work just fine. I don’t believe there are expiration dates on any of them. I had a Kaohsiung Metro Card I hadn’t used in 3 years and it worked. Should be no difference with an Easycard.
Hi John, thank you so much for this great video! I get so confused by public transit as I live in S. CA and drive everywhere, and your video makes it much more easy to understand.I have tried to find this answer online, but can't seem to find the answer. Also, if you use the MRT card, how does it know how much to charge you since the price is based on distance? Sorry if these questions seems so basic, but I don't have much experience with this. Thank you so much! :)
Debbie C hi! You will need to transfer from the Airport MRT at Taipei Main Station in order to get to the Guting MRT stop. Best way to do this is to leave the Airport MRT Station once you arrive and head for Beiman MRT Station on the green line. There are directions everywhere and you can also ask at the MRT counter. They can speak enough English to give you instructions on how to get there. It’s a 5-10 Walk and from Beiman Station it’s 4 stops to Guting. The MRT gates calculate fares based on where you entered,(stop), and where you exit. Don’t worry about that, it’s all automatic. Because the Airport MRT is separate from Taipei metro you will check out there with your Easycard and check back in at Beiman Station. Good Luck!!!

Hi if I add $200 bills in NTD on the card will it be enough for 2 weeks ? And if I add more and don’t use the card will it work months or years after that when I return ? Do they have free maps or sell them of the subway system? I’m also taking the high speed rail when I get to the airport in Taipei DONT they have the HSR at the airport? It’ll be more convenient for me Does that include No water as well?🙄 I mean what if I start choking to death😂😂😂 Thanks
HSR does not go to the airport. The Airport MRT does. I don’t think 200NT will be enough for two weeks on the MRT however you can keep adding on at any station until before you leave. No maps that I’m aware but you can download the Taipei MRT app on your phone that includes a map. The money left on your card will be good for months later but I honestly don’t know for how long based on your activity. It might very well be good past a year but I don’t know for sure.
