As a Canadian citizen living here in Canada I don't know what the hell is going on but I know that Putin must be stopped and Russia must not benefit in any way from their horrific violence (or it will just continue).

Certainly Anzac Day, has not diminished over the passing years, if anything it has become more respected.
Hi to the editors of Ukrainian the Latest. I despair at the quality of reporting and analysis of the course of the Ukrainian Russo war on your website. It simply does not reflect the realities acknowledged by serious military analysts. This is very misleading for your listeners. I would like to volunteer to use my good offices to invite onto your show and accomplished and impartial analyst who could offer a far more realistic assessment of what is going on and how this conflict will end. The person I refer to is Mr Alexander Mercouris I think your listeners would find his analysis revealing even if it might not be what they are used to hearing or want to hear. Regards Chris
In the IUSA we have National Cemeterys all over the nation. Every active base has one as do many closed posts. A veteran can be buried in any of them. I have a good friend buried at the Ft Stevens cemetery near Astoria OR. All of the fort’s lands except the cemetery and the caretakers home have been returned to the State of Oregon. Arlington National Cemetery is running out of space so burials there are restricted.
The question of a Ukranian national cemetery fills me with foreboding : can we trust that Putin will not send his bombs to such an obvious target and add insult to injury ?
Plucky Ukrainian Zarina Zabrisky is in Kherson. She records videos of her walking in the city showing what it is like living there. A few days ago she mentioned these drones targeting civilians on the streets like Don said. She showed private cars belonging to residents under the cover of trees while they hope they will not become targeted. She worried that soon the leaves will fall. People waiting for a bus or getting in their cars are targeted by Russian drones. It is endless. Yes, like a shooting range. This is awful.

In the Philippines, we have the "Libingan ng mga Bayani." Translates to Heroes' Cemetery. Problem is we have 7100 hundred islands. If the family is from the far south, and the hero is buried at the "Libingan ng mga Bayani," he/she is far from his/her family. It would have been nice if there are Heroes' Cemeteries in different regions of the country to bring the heroes closer to home. Edit: Our Heroes' Cemetery is "the designated resting place for Filipino soldiers, war veterans, and citizens considered as heroes and martyrs." Even now, any present or retired military personnel who dies in line of duty is eligible for burial there. The AFP has rules to be qualified to be buried there. It was not made to commemorate a single battle. It is to commemorate any Filipino who has brought honor to the country.
"It was Sam's first view of a battle of Men against Men, and he did not like it much. He was glad that he could not see the dead face. He wondered what the man's name was and where he came from; and if he was really evil of heart, or what lies or threats had led him on the long march from his home; and if he would not really rather have stayed there in peace." There were at least 2 prominant CSA officers who were buried at Arlington, but only becasue they much later honrably served in the US Army. otherwise most othe roughly 300 confederates buried there were so buried as a matter of convienience as they died at nearby hospitals as POWs. After Pres McKinley did change the rules as an effort at reconciliation and in view of the lost cause myth beginnnig to confuse and bias historical understanding, a few other old confederates were buried there at their or their families request. The last one was in 1921, and interestingly he died in Europe at age 72 but was brought back to Arliington for burial.
I've long said that if the federal government continues on its present course, the United States will eventually be covered with national cemeteries and presidential libraries.
During my travels in Northern India I found myself in Shillong and not far from Kohima where British and Indian soldiers turned the tide of the Japanese invasion over the Governors tennis court. I intended to go to visit the cemetery there. However the nights were so cold and shivery I chickened out.
Have a national monument with the names of the fallen in Kiev. The moniument to the US military killed in Vietnam fits its purpose. A national focus while the graves are close to their communities. This has been a war that has in many ways allowed Ukraine to re-found itself. It may not be a war of independence but is a war of survival to preserve that independence and the resolve of the population to resist and fight has impressed the country’s friends and put political pressure on govts to fund and supply materiel for the defence, even if too slow and without the declaration of a war goal. This could simply have been the defence of international law and protection of a country being invaded by a neighbour with the declared purpose of annexing it. That said, war memorials commemorate the military war dead yet we know many more are wounded, maimed, suffer and their families and social circle face deep loss, and communities lose important participants in local and national social fabric and development
Just a comment on the war dead issue. Memorials are especially important to the families of the fallen. Grief is personal and can be profound. When it spills over into a national debate, there is a danger of the military and militarism becoming venerated and given a privileged place in the national consciousness. Such a change is a move away from the civic understanding of society and often accompanies heightened nationalism, which isn't always a good thing. For example, elevated militaries can and do involve themselves in politics in numerous countries around the world. As war radicalises nations, it would be a catastrophe for Ukraine if Putin's war on them drove Ukraine into similar right wing nationalism as Putin suffers from, even if it is only the counter to Putin. We can already see this type of effect in countries like Hungary and Slovakia. To conclude, memorialising the dead is important, however national monuments like the UK's Cenotaph are likely more effective in steering the middle course than mass cemeteries. Ultimately it is for Ukraine to decide.
