  • The maritime industry is witnessing a surprising resurgence of sails as a solution to the environmental impact of commercial shipping. French startup Wisamo, in collaboration with Michelin, introduces Louise Hameau-a large, inflatable wing sail designed for cargo ships. This innovative sail addresses the pollution concerns associated with bunker fuel, offering a clean alternative to propel ships forward by harnessing wind energy.
Louise Hameau operates on a sophisticated principle; an air compressor inflates the sail's structure, allowing it to catch the wind like an airplane wing. This harnessed wind energy is transformed into electricity, providing a sustainable alternative to bunker fuel. Its adaptability and user-friendly features make it well-suited for commercial vessels, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 20% in a single cargo shipment.
The sail's design, featuring low-pressure inflation and strategic mast placement, enhances performance while minimizing mechanical stress on the fabric. As the world grapples with climate change, this modern take on sails represents a promising stride towards cleaner and greener practices in the shipping industry. The Louise Hameau sail stands as a testament to innovative solutions reshaping age-old practices for a more sustainable future.

Remember ships were sailed through the ocean long time ago. Now you're stepping backwards and didn't even remember what a sailboat is😂😂

Deve ser uma fortuna essas velas. Ainda mais que são produzidas na França onde os impostos são bem altos.

I wonder how much in a percentage the sails ACTUALLY reduce engine power? This will be a complete fail in wind over a certain strength.

I want to see them apply this to container ships, which carry the bulk of goods across water.

Exactly. We need a proof of concept first.

One of the easiest way is to build ships based on solar panels and battery more better way , more eco friendly than battery

Too bad we can't figure out ways to make layers of tubed turbines that can adjust on how much "wind' power is needed to either move the ship traditionally {while collecting energy through the wind turbines} and also use Solar Fabric [Yes it exists] and maybe offload to electric motors when there isn't wind~

Genuinely curious what the extra weight vs wattage gained for all that would be. Certainly it would be profitable for at least a subsector of oversea shipping, given that the manufacturing of the technology is affordable enough

      First guy aggression aside
1:25 it's not sail alone, still have engine help for speed
