Tails went from just a sidekick to a pretty important main character/hero in the franchise! (The modern games Tails is a partner sense they mostly focus on Sonic besides Sonic forces sense Sonic's partner is the Avatar.) Tails has been through a lot. The Sonic Movie 2 is going for a Classic era Tails which is fine with me. I am so excited!
About Sonic Forces they were trying to show depression when Tails said "Sonic help me" so I will give it a pass. I think Sega just made Tails cower besides those moments because of fans complaining so Sega was just being Self aware.
This is all my opinion but I think Tails was great in Sonic x especially season 3 when he finally broke out of being in Sonic's shadow and became a leader. Also Tails and Sonic are not just best friends but brothers which I feel like people don't understand that, even if not related by blood. I feel like most people overlook that. So yea Sonic and Tails are family not just best friends!

tails is my probably the most favourite character in the sonic series, i even have a custom tails like character which isn't even a fox but some sort of magical transforming goo but the character likes foxes mostly winter foxes so it transformed into one. sadly i can't draw it i can only imagine it
