My husband and I met Dan Dean in Belgium in 2017. It was at the 551st Parachute Infantry Battalion's First Remembrance Walk. The 551st was a WWII independent parachute battalion and Dan informed us that he thought of the lyrics for this song when he was walking a 551st battlefield, the Sunken Road, with his father on an earlier visit to Belgium. The 551st spearheaded the Allied counteroffensive of the Battle of the Bulge on 3 January, 1945. His father, Bill Dean, was injured for the third time at the battle of the Sunken Road during that initial assault with the 551st. He was pinned down by heavy artillery, machine gun and point blank tank fire when Bill made a promise to God. He asked God that if He let him live he would do anything he asked for him to do. When it came for Bill's turn to be shot by the tank crew he buried his face in the snow, already injured and unable to run and prayed...the tank crew stopped firing, cranked up and drove away. Bill Dean then made good on that promise...and then some. He returned home, married his hometown sweetheart, had five sons, became a minister and all of his sons became ministers as well...to include Dan Dean...the Dean of Phillips, Craig and Dean. Of note, Bill Dean's Battalion suffered one of the highest casualty rates of all Allied forces during the Battle of the Bulge.
