- Episode 104: Tom, Evan & Rémy had a movie night sleepover and randomly stumbled onto watching a Nora Ephron double feature of YOU'VE GOT MAIL (1998) and MICHAEL (1996), the later of which induced seriously dangerous psychotropic effects as it's one of the most misguided, insane and embarrassing films Hollywood has ever produced!

I love this movie. They were shooting in Austin and managed a record store in town. The production designer needed a record collection for the character William Hurt played, a jaded boomer might have. So I put together a stack of Steely Dan, Warren Zevon, JJ Cale, Jackson Browne, Dylan record. The production designer bought the records and gave me $500 cash for my curation. That was rent!
No wonder movies go over budget.
I’ve never seen the movie. Can William Hurt’s record collection even be seen ?
I saw this in the theater in 96, and everyone started staring around at everyone else, wondering if maybe they were being pranked. It was one of the most bizarre movie experiences I've ever had.
Resting Sniff Face LMAOOOOO
Ha-ha, so good.
That got me good!! haha Perfect.
They should have changed Hurts character into the stereotypical worn down journalist who drinks and smokes all day long. All of a sudden it would have been an Oscar worthy performance.
Haha totally
That would do it!
Just discovered your podcasts and living for them / smashing them 👏🏻 thanks Evan et al.
The William Hurt stuff!! I was dying laughing, and I wasn't even there! Does this mean I have to watch this fucking movie? Goddammit!
you guys NAILED youve got mail..hilariously on point. Ephron always horribly cutesy in general..
We got nail!
@@OneFuckingHour HAHAHA totally got nail... the Meg Ryan sniffing look had me laugh out loud..
Another great episode! Hilarious. Crazy 90s bad ,big budget nonsense. Dance sequence was something else. William Hurt: Priceless. Ha
Another crapfest from the 90s : Defenseless starring Barbara Hershey. 'Fatal Attraction 'rip off that has to be seen to be believed.
The way you talked this up in the intro had me thinking y'all got abducted by aliens
I get it, that out-of-it experience that a truly *wrong* film can induce. I had it with "The Book of Henry". That film is insane.
I'll never forget this movie getting switched at the counter at Blockbuster with my rental of Wild Reeds (a French, gay coming of age movie set in post war Provence). I still wonder what the people who took that home thought when they popped it in the VCR expecting Michael. . . .
The editing was fucking weird. Maybe I was just too Michael'd out but I swear they made it look like Michael's mom just coughs up a fucking egg and dies.
Yes we forgot that
Thanks for this. The way this film unintentionally causes mirth reminded me of a film I saw a few years earlier in 1993 called 'Night Train to Venice' starring Hugh Grant
My Hanks/Ryan go to is Joe Versus the Volcano. It gives good brain cloud.
I actually enjoyed this episode way more than I thought I would. Thumbs up.
I disagree with your trilogy list. It's Joe Versus the Volcano, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've Got Mail.
You guys should do a Kevin Spacey double header of K-PAX & Pay It Forward.😂
If they say one negative thing about K-Pax, I will somehow reach through my phone and slap everybody on that show.
Travolta sniffing his own farts & coke
Great episode! I was slightly nervous when I saw the thumbnail. This came out when I was 9 and forced to be a Catholic, this maybe the 1st movie that made me laugh purely because I thought it was dumb. Best paired in a double feature with "The Prophecy" from 95.
Walken as Gabriel still goes so hard
I laughed so hard during this. Sadly, I saw Michael in the cinema when it was released and remember realizing what a poor choice I'd made.
"The poor man's Oliver Platt" I thought the exact same watching Michael today for the pod. Huey reminded me so much of Platt's character in "A Time to Kill" also 1996
I was literally listening to the MGMT song Me and Michael when this dropped. Lmao
Hated this movie. Would never have seen it, had I not been with a group of people who wanted to go to the movies and settled on this one. Although, Andie Macdowell was a great beauty. Love looking at her.
Nice to know my instincts we're correct about this movie. I never saw it. and am happy to go to my grave without ever seeing it
This is my favorite pod of all time and it would be my greatest joy if you guys covered The Canyons (2013).
I saw Michael with friends when it came out. It was the most embarrassing, post-Travolta Pulp Fiction comeback film one could ever imagine. I was embarrassed to watch it.
I usually tend to forget about this movie and I’d always get it confused with Phenomenon, which was another John Travolta film around this time. His choices in the 90s after Pulp Fiction were friggin’ insane and very questionable. Except for Face/Off. *That* was a solid choice.
I worked in a video store in the late 90s. The owner would love to put this laserdisc on in the store. Every time I would think, "Oh no".
Would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall. I remember that movie as Pure Saccharine audience
Pleasing, feel-good schmaltz. My mother-in-law Loved it. “Oh yeah, angels are just schlubby assholes like the rest of us!” Apparently all you need are oversized wings, boxer shorts and a cigarette to get that across. Incredibly economical. As a boomer, I apologize.
I think Travolta also is happy with his performance in Fanatic (2019) too. He likes playing out in the fringe.
With Aquarius there are strange coincidences.
I thought this was a joke when I saw it on Instagram. Glad to see it wasn't. Boy, '90s Travolta sucked. How 'bout One Fucking Hour on the "White Man's Burden" snapper?
take a shot every time the guys say "boomer", especially that rock dad on the right, trying to pass as not boomer. You will be dead after an hour.
Michael is a very watchable movie for me but this was a funny episode.
Circa 97 or 98 I watched Michael and Powder several times. Rented dated nights of my youth. I don't remember much of either have been meaning to revisit them as an adult but haven't yet.
An unironic fave tbh
The movie Micheal is chum for boomers.
This movies central thesis is "not even heaven is free from crippling depression and addiction"
Roger Ebert gave Michael 3 stars. Grotesque.
Unreal
He was really cranky and hard to please until the mid 90's, when he got soft, way too soft on, on this kind of crap. Go and watch S&E in the 80's, when they regularly lamented the decline of Hollywood... Siskel never stopped complaining but Ebert changed.
Julie and Julia is terrific. Even if “Mail” is awful
hey wait a minute...how does michael get his clothes on with wings on his back?
Saw this wet turd in the theater when it was released. I tried to like it. I wanted to like it. Travolta was back on ttrack supposedly. Sweet baby Jesus, what misguided piece of crap!!! I didn't actually hate it, but I was massively disappointed in Travolta (and Nora Ephron too, to be honest) Such a big heap of nothing.
WHEN IS THE NEXT EPISODE COMING?
Just about to upload it early for Patreon folks. For rest of y'all it'll come out on Monday
You've Got Mail as not a great reboot. I liked the original movie better than that 98 revisiting cash grab.
What movie is the clip starting at 0:37 from?
This is the start of John Travolta's decline how could he do pulp fiction, broken arrow and face/off and end up with this rubbish
No way, he did Face Off, A Civil Action, The General's Daughter and Primary Colors from 97-99. Battlefield Earth in 2000 was the beginning of the end and he had some decent ones in the 2000s but his career was basically s@it by 2008 like it was in the early 90s.
@@BishopWalters12 you're right I totally missed the boat on this one I think you're definitely right after battlefield earth it was all downhill from there
Face Off blows.
Do Abel Ferrara's 'Bad Lieutenant'
Travolta has always been a hack, and QT's stunt casting of him in Pulp Fiction was a fluke. He never made another good movie, he just kept striking while the iron was hot, even lukewarm. He wasn't even anything special in Pulp Fiction for that matter.
You're wrong.
Ha. Was a location PA on this out of college. The ending Chicago scenes. 5 days or so. I just remember Nora Ephron was more enthused with browsing in the used record store on location than directing. Didn't see William Hurt interacting much. He Just observing before set-ups, then running following Michael. Met Travolta and his wings real quick. Accidentally saw Andie Mcdowell nursing baby (Margaret Qualley). Anyway, didn't like it at all then, and only saw it again for the first time since earlier this year, and it was mildly enjoyable mess. Apparently it has tons of esoteric fallen angel symbolism subtext I didn't bother to look for. But can't disagree with review. It Made $100 million then. Go figure.
Omg. Some days you just want to watch a stupid movie that was kind of funny. It’s almost not worth talking about for an hour. Haha. I never saw that Poster. That was def wrong. The last 10 min of this pod was finally fun. Watching Michael was not as hard
