They were actually a fairly common sight in Japan when they were new. They still do have some cult status and you can come across them once in a while. There's a garage in Kanagawa prefecture called "Spinning Garage" where the owner has stored over 200+ of these older VW's (most of them are Mk.2 Golf's)

The Green Porsche is a 914, the dark Grey one a 356 Speedster (the 911's mum), the red spyder is a Jaguar e-type, the Green froggy car is an Austin-Healey Sprite MkI (indeed also named frogeye), the covered Lambo is a Countach, the red Ferrari is 512BB. Can't wait to see you try some of our europeans supercars or even better hypercars (you won't find more capable cars)
I agree on either dealers or very wealthy collectors that want to keep these cars secret. Main giveaway for those is the plastic on the seats and the car covers. That Yakuza one is pretty wild. I am curious on why Japan does not give property owners a process to claim these cars and sell or scrap them depending on condition. Either way there is millions of US dollars on that level.
I think the silver gc8 with areo kit is an impreza s201 which was an limited version made by STI in the early 2000. Also this lime green porsche is called 914.
3:05 yeah, I saw one at Daikoku in June. Same color. No number, but had plates. Very common color combo. I basically had to tell the people we were with how common these were back home. You see, they made so many kits where you made your own Shelby Cobra from a foxbody mustang 79-93 donor. Sure, they’re still like $60-100k USD cars, especially if you paid someone else to make it for you, but there’s so many of them that they are devalued IMO. One time, I was at a car show, and one that looked just like this showed up late. I couldn’t even be bothered to walk over to it to check it out because I had seen so many in the past. What made that one special? At the end of the show I learned that the owner was Carol Shelby’s nephew. So odds are pretty good that not only was that a real Shelby Cobra, but that Carol Shelby may have touched, ridden, even driven it. But I paid no respect to it simply because of how many kit cars exist. Rare sight in Japan, I suppose. Though funny that it’s the same color combo. So there’s at least two running around.
9:56 This is a VW-Porsche, it was a collaboration between VW and Porsche in the 70s, they have been build between 1969 - 1976.
