I love this analogy! It truly highlights lots of important factors in life. It's interesting to see the jar "appearing" to be full numerous times when questioned.
Dude is TH-cam stalking me or what. Yesterday we were talking about time management in class and my teacher showed us a video like this with rocks, pebbles, and sand. And then today this shows up in my recommendations
TEXT OF THE WHOLE VIDEO: There’s a well known story about a university professor who wanted to make a point about how we make the most of our time. The professor stood before his class with some items in front of him. When the class began, without speaking he picked up a large empty jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full, they agreed that it was full, so the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured the into the jar, he shook the jar lightly and watched how the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The professor then asked again if the jar was full, they chuckled and agreed that it was indeed full this time. The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled the remaining open areas of the jar. Now, said the professor, I want you to recognize that this jar signifies your life. The rocks are the truly important things, such as family, health and relationships. If all else was lost, and only the rocks remained your life would still be meaningful. The pebbles are the other things that matter in your life, such work or school. The sand signifies the remaining “small stuff” and material possessions. If you were to put sand into the jar first, there’s no room for the rocks or the pebbles. The same can be applied to your lives. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are truly important. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your life and well being. Take time to look after you health, play with your children, go for a run, write a letter to your grandmother. They will always be time to go to work, clean the house or watch TV. Take care of the rocks first- the things that really matter. Set your priorities, the rest is just pebbles and sand.
My example was with a cup maybe 16oz, i used 1 can of potted meat to show how my family dependency is, i used walnuts and m&m to show the responsibility i take on, i used a half bag of chip to show how i feel through out the day, i used Keebler.bite size cookies to show my social environment and relationship, and i used sugar to fill in the rest of the time left are to fill in gaps
This video completely misses the second part (and the whole point) of the analogy ... if you put the sand and pebbles into the jar first, you won't be able to fit in all the rocks!
Of course this is also quite wrong, because you can put the same amount of sand in the jar and still fit the pebbles and then start dropping in the rocks one at a time. Shake the jar a little and the rocks will settle into place at the bottom and provide room for more rocks, until you end at the same place with a jar full of rocks, pebbles, and sand, and if you wish some water or beer or wine or coffee or whatever liquid you prefer. Just goes to show that analogies are not life and only bear so much examination.
Wrong. The pebbles and rocks will not settle down into the sand because the sand has less empty space in a given volume due to being more particulate. This makes them heavier. And since they are heavier, they are what settle at the bottom...not the rocks and pebbles.
and all the other replies aside, even assuming you are correct, that still requires a "shakeup" to make it work, which, in life, is much more stressful than doing it right in the first place … so the analogy would still work :)
our teacher back then added a beer at the end and said "and there is always time for a beer with a friend"

Amazing how many videos about this subject I had to go through to finally find the one that was concise and accurate. Thank you for this.
Send me the link to the original one

This represents do not sweat the small stuff. Set priorities and make those priorities rules for your life.
The classic question: "Is this going to be on the exam?"
Dude is TH-cam stalking me or what. Yesterday we were talking about time management in class and my teacher showed us a video like this with rocks, pebbles, and sand. And then today this shows up in my recommendations
Omg same
I read that they added water in the end to signify the bland time that fills our daily life. Read this story when I was a kid.
ROCK SAND, ROCK SANDDD, with pebbles

Thank you so much! Really great help.
thank you angel
And then you add water 😂
Not my avid teacher making us watch this is class
I was an avid kid too haha. We would always watch videos like this.
Now pour some water in it. :D
Its the cup half empty or half full syndrome. So I will try to look at the positive rather than the negative
Yet some people will say that the pebble and sand is the most important than the rocks
I
Goat professor
Can you pour any water into the can after theres sand in it?
I bet you can still fit a little bit of water in there...slowly and over time. What would that signify?
Lol. Very funny.
Write a letter to your Grandmother, please.
I have no grandmother-
My example was with a cup maybe 16oz, i used 1 can of potted meat to show how my family dependency is, i used walnuts and m&m to show the responsibility i take on, i used a half bag of chip to show how i feel through out the day, i used Keebler.bite size cookies to show my social environment and relationship, and i used sugar to fill in the rest of the time left are to fill in gaps
Pebbles are Huge and sand is the cover
wow.... THAT'S DEEP
You missed out the main point of this metaphor, that if you put these things into the jar in the wrong order they don't fit.
And pebbles play a role in our life like
Aww where is the coffee at the end ... he pours in a cup of coffee because there is a always time for a coffee with a friend :)
really meaningful
Makes sense
beautiful
Could you make closed captions available for this video?
There’s a comment by Mia above with transcript (can’t link directly to it, but I think it’s the 2nd most upvoted)
What happens if you break the jar with the rocks? … Asking for a friend…
Why i feel that having a job should be a rock?
I agree. I thought the same thing when the video used work as being relative to the sand.

very inspiring 😓
My teacher brought me here
If I don’t have a job I would be on street begging for food. And I would not be able to enjoy my life at all
my teacher brought me here 😭👋🏼
That's a really good lesson I imagine the rocks being God.👍
i like rucks
cute!
You are missing WATER.
is that Karl Pilkington's dad?
According to professor rocks are like?
This video completely misses the second part (and the whole point) of the analogy ... if you put the sand and pebbles into the jar first, you won't be able to fit in all the rocks!
who originally wrote or created that metaphor? (author)
As far as I understand, it comes from a series of models from Stephen Covey / Franklin Covey
what class was this professor supposed to be teaching?
This isn’t the Tik Tok song
I know one of y’all is my class mate.
This!
disappointing... the beer part is missing....

What even matters besides
- Family
- Friends
- Heath?
Who's Heath? My Dad's name is Keith though.
How was this video made with those text graphics? Anyone. What sort of tool was used?
Thanks for watching - We use a combination of Adobe Illustrator, Animate & After Effects :)
“Kinetic typography” is the keyword you need. You can use that to search for software options, templates/tutorials for certain effects, etc
