CRICUT FOR CARDMAKING: 5 Easy Beginner Tutorials

  • Learn to make handmade greeting cards with your Cricut cutting machine. Here are 5 easy-to-follow tutorials for paper craft beginners.
    Electronic cutting machines have become very popular over the years. Their ease of use and seemingly endless possibilities can inspire many different craft ideas.
    If you like making DIY cards then an electronic cutting machine like a Cricut might make the process a lot easier. Once you have your Cricut set up, with Design Space set up, then all you need is some paper and adhesive.
    For these card ideas below, I used them with traditional cardmaking supplies as well. I also used some of Cricut's tools such as a marker and a scoring tool.

    I’ve had my Cricket Explore Air 2 about two years now. One of the best tips I’ve learned is to place different colors of paper in different areas of the mat. For example, you couple put purple in the left upper corner for cutting a flower, yellow in the right upper corner for cutting out the flower centers, green in the left lower corner for leaves, and black in the right lower corner for cutting out text. Every time the machine tells you to unload your mat, you do. Then reload the same mat rather than loading a new mat. You just have to be sure to move your images to the appropriate corners when you’re preparing to cut in the “mat” portion of design space. Some of Crickets images use many different colors. You can easily use all four corners of a couple mats when cutting out an image like a “dressed” teddy bear, lol ! I hope I’ve explained this tip so that it makes sense. I enjoy combining images from the Cricket Explore with stamped images. There are a lot of great, free borders in Design Space. Your video is the first I’ve seen that encourages combining these techniques. Thanks for a great video !

      Actually, I started with an Explore Air2 over two years ago, upgraded to the Maker these last 2 years. I put paper or vinyl of different colors all over the mat and let it all cut. In design space, lay it out, check the size of material you need to cut, cut it out using a paper cutter. Go to make it. You will see many mats of different color. All mats will put the color in the upper left corner. Because you precut the material, you go to each mat, move it to the first mat. Yes it does turn that color, need to move it off the left corner and go somewhere else on the mat. Know the grid, line it up, place your material down and go to the next mat, move it to the first, etc. Keep in the boundries. Put the mat in, cut, walk away. No need to put the mat back in and out. Cuts all pieces in one swipe. Hope this helps. You should not have to unload and reload.

      @carrie5260 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Cathy Miller - I never realized I could move the images onto one mat to avoid the prompt “unload/reload”. Another crafter passed the information along to me the same way I did. I’ve never tried to pull images “up” from the lower mats, but I’ll certainly give it a try, thank you ! By the way, when I bought my machine “snap mat” didn’t exist, just appeared a year or so ago. Do you know what that’s used for ?

      @@cathymiller4489 Cathy, does positioning images in various quadrants help to lessen the wear & tear on the mats? Every "how to" I've seen always shows the images to be cut positioned in the upper left corner. I'd think that over time this would cause that area to become thin; if not from the blade, then perhaps because of bending the mat continually to remove the image cut outs. Curious to know. I don't yet have a Cricut.

    • @cathymiller4489
      @cathymiller4489 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@amkarei It's not about becoming thin, but more losing the tackiness. You do have to gently roll the mat. What I meant about putting all small projects on one mat, is you can have 5 (more) colors of paper, vinyl, whatever, in your project, go to print, you see 5 mats In the Cricut page to print/cut, remove, reload, print/cut again. Cricut will put them on the same mat when you move them to the mat but it will change to the color of the mat you move them to. So say I have five colors, move them to the first mat that is black (this is just before printing) all my colors will look black despite I have multible colors on the mat. I know where I'm going to place the material all over the mat, I know the size. Measure twice, cut once. Saves time. I'm a mechanical engineer. Cricut is simple, easy, Silhouette is more what I would want but you have to pay for the extra. I use free stuff to make an svg. Another reason I purchased Cricut is a stronger motor. I can't tell you the best machine. Keep researching. I love the Maker. If I didn't answer your question, please let me know. I'm not paid at all for my opinion. Just mine. If I didn't answer your question, please let me know.

    Wow, am I glad I finally found your channel! Easy to understand, plain talking, not diverting to loads of other technical information while explaining how to do something, I am now feeling confident enough to try my first card! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain in terms a total beginner/novice user of the cricut explorer machine. I have hit the subscribe button so I don’t have to sit through endless videos where I end up more confused than when I started. Thanks 🥰

    Thank you!!!! Thank you! Thank you! This tutorial was just what I needed. I purchased a Cricut Joy, never owned a Cricut, used one a long time ago. The frustrating thing about it is that their is no instructions. I am not computer savvy. Your video has helped me to understand the steps it takes in creating more than just cards with inserts. I’ll be saving the video to continue watching it over again 😀 Again, thank you JD! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    I’ve just bought the Maker and was so happy to discover your TH-cam! The others I’ve checked were all about vinyl and fabric. When I did the unboxing and accompanying TH-cam I wound up frustrated but you’ve given me a lot of confidence. And I’m happy to see that many of the techniques are similar to Adobe Illustrator. At 82, I don’t have the energy to start from scratch. I’m a card maker and plan to do original work but let the Cricut do more of the mundane, or repetitive work. I’d wondered if I’d made a mistake but you’ve encouraged me. Thank you so much!😊

    I do have the same Cricut Explore Air 2. I agonized about getting it when my original Cricut (2nd anniversary edition) had a screen freeze and I couldn't get any satisfaction from Provocraft.. I still wanted to access my cartridges and after 3 months, they had a Presidents Day sale that tipped me over the edge and I went for it. The new one was a learning curve for sure. However, I kept it covered for awhile and eyed it suspiciously whenever I was in my craft room. Eventually I made friends with it and really appreciate ANY and ALL TUTORIALS that you decide to do. I smiled when I saw you cutting out the hearts because I had tried to line up three circles to cut for a slimline card and eventually the placement issues won and I gave up. The old Cricut just cut things where you put them so I found it odd that this seems more complicated. But I am probably missing something.!
    Thanks for showing this!!!

      Jameelah Jones - Just wait until you see all the cute images you can cut out ! I love it. I’m just surprised that we don’t see more videos that combine the use of “cut images” and stamped images. When I started making cards, I didn’t have many “sentiment” stamps, so I used my stamps on the front of my card, then cut out an appropriate sentiment for the inside of my card. Also, if you see projects that are listed for use with the Joy machine, the file can be modified for use with the Explore. I think I saw a tutorial on You Tube.

    Thank you for your awesome videos, JD! Especially this one about Cricut card making. I just received a new Cricut Explore Air 2 for Christmas - it's still in the box... I am a bit scared of it yet! ☺ But now, your video has helped me so much to take away some of my fears. I have only recently started making homemade cards... I made ALL of my Christmas cards this year ... that was a JOB! 🤪 So, when I got the Cricut and started looking for videos, it seemed most of them were about using vinyl for mugs and t-shirts, which is great, but I really love making cards, and I was afraid I now had a very expensive piece of machine that I likely wasn't going to use much...but, Voila... here is your wonderful video showing me all kinds of things I can do to make cards with my new Cricut, and as you said, I can do so much now, without investing into so many expensive dies. I am now very excited to unbox and start playing! Wheeee! Thank you, JD! 😀💗
    P.S. You should be a professional trainer for Cricut! They would be lucky to have you! Just an idea...but please don't stop making your terrific videos for TH-cam!

Straight out the box i was very nervous and overwhelmed, and to be honest the 4 card "instructions" didn't help and i kind of regretted getting it at that moment BUT after some searching i came across your video , and this was more than informative and honest. thank you for posting your videos and i will continue to watch them and build up the courage to start making my cards :)

    I have a Cricut explore and enjoy making cards with it. I can do things similar to stamp and die sets without the expensive kits and storage.

    Thank you JD for sharing this information and providing examples on how to do it. I was gifted with a Cricut Explore Air 2 for Christmas in 2019 and I have yet to use it. I did open it and turn it on, but I haven't done anything else with it. It's not because I don't want to use it, but more about having a bit of anxiety about learning how to use it with Design Space, as it's a lot different from the first one I had, the Cricut Expression, which you used cartridges with.
