      As far as off road only tests will go that Rubicon will be best in class easily. It wont win anything else as far as best in class though, it's an off road vehicle with a pickup bed.

      @@housepianist All I know is that I can buy a fully loaded Nissan Frontier Pro4x for only slightly more than the BASE model of the Ranger. These trucks are ridiculously overpriced, because they are full of shit that doesn't belong in a truck. Yeah enjoy your nissan with 5 gears and 15/21 mpg. A V8 F150 gets 16/22 and thats a bigger and far more powerful and capable truck. The only appealing thing to me in the frontier is that you can get it with a 6spd manual. But even with that the mpg doesnt change. The frontier is just outdated in every category compared to the competition that is why its cheaper.

      To each their own...however that 3.6 gas engine for the Gladiator is a joke. At least put a proper V8 hemi in as an option, if you are spending 40-60K for a Jeep/Truck then you’re not buying it for the MPG’s! BTW half are going to lift it and put 35”s or 37”s as soon as they get off the sales lot..IMHO they should’ve only two engines...a 3.0 liter diesel or a 5.7 Hemi. Maybe...a third the V6 gas engines for rental cars
      Ps I know the new diesel comes out next year but that still doesn’t explain not having a Hemi V8 option!

    • @transws6am
      @transws6am 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@robertpowers1045 talk to your government about that... I'm sure FCA would be more than willing to throw hemis in them all. There is a reason it's not even an option. The CAFE laws have made them make a choice of where they are going to throw those engines. You force the v6s on the chargers or rams and those sales will disappear... The wranglers have shown to be more than capable with the engines and that's why they made this choice. And the lifting with bigger tires is more about the gearing than a hemi.

If Rams get the win because of looks and interior then this thing should be losing for the same reason. This will only appeal to jeep people. @C-Bomb you mean it is the only truck in the group that has a properly geared rear? I haven't driven anything with less than 4.10 gear ratio since 1997. My 97 TJ I put 4.10 in it along w/ a lift and larger tires. My '02 Suburban 2500 w/8.1L came stock w 4.10, and I upped to 33" tires no problem. My current '13 Power Wagon w/ 35" tires has stock 4.56, and will be 37" soon without need for regear. If I bought something w anything less I would be soon upgrading it to at least 4.10, or whatever best fit my tire size. They left out in this "review" about it being the only truck w 2 solid axles which it more conducive to lifting and modding + durability. No snapping weak CVs and tie rods.

      Yah thars true.i dont see a market of this being sold to someone that is looking to buy a new mid size truck or getting someone to switch from a Tacoma or a Colorado to buy this. For the reason of towing.theres a reason why midsize trucks exist.to be small easy to handle and great for everyday use. But with this i feel like its trying to live up to his bigger brother company,RAM. but failed. The Gladiator looks a little to big to be a midsize truck i was surprised he daid it was one. For that reason its not worth what im getting in dependability and price. Most jeeps i see here in texas are pavements princess's all including alot of Rubicon trims.this truck wont make it easy to compare price to quality and dependability over time.

    • @johnfitzgerald5158
      @johnfitzgerald5158 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @C-Bomb I guess you guys are making my point for me. Exactly, there are many people like me that want to put bigger tires, upgraded components and a lift. Jeeps are more ready for that. I expect to see some jacked up badass Gladiators out there. The scale will look much better, just like the other 4 door Jeeps with bigger than stock tires. They know who they are marketing to. The guys like me that had to give up a small capable Jeep for a much bigger truck, but lost the convertible / utilitarian aspects, when our families started to grow. Shit, I went to Power Wagon to get something more utilitarian and solid axles in a truck. My truck is all Thuren'd up. I suspect there will be a whole lot of people that will find this the best of both worlds. Additionally, diff gearing is all about power vs leverage to turn the tires. It is B.S. when somebody says everyday vs off-road or low speed vs highway. The gears simply give you the leverage to turn the tires. Bigger tires, more distance per revolution, higher gear ratio brings rpms in the right range for the speed traveled. Programmer gets shift points and speedo corrected.

    • @cbphoto87
      @cbphoto87 5 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Sure but not everyone wants a massive truck. Full size is only better than midsize at comparable price if you have a utility for it where the midsize struggles. If you plan on towing a ton or have a lot of passengers, you have an argument, otherwise I'll take the mobility and overall better looks of the midsize, which is exactly why they get away with the price.

    • @jaytrock3217
      @jaytrock3217 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Just depends on what you want to do with it. I have upgraded my Tacoma's rear suspension with heavy springs. I can carry over a ton, no problem. I don't want a larger truck because I like it being narrower. Easier to park, easier to overroad in tight spaces.

      I think seeing the Gladiator Rubicon and TRD Pro on the trails would be more interesting. The Gladiator has a solid front axle and the Rubicon package has electronic sway-bar disconnect so you can get additional articulation. My hope is this will force Toyota to finally bring the 70 series Land Cruiser to the USA and put an end to all this fluff marketing.

    • @deereman8237
      @deereman8237 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think that if the TFL guys really push the two trucks, the Gladiator will come out on top, at least on the rocks. I think in sand, or deep mud the Tacoma will win due to the independent front axle. However, the Rubicon Gladiator with the locking diffs, electric sway bar disconnect, and the 8 speed automatic transmission, will come out on top overall. Also, it seems like Toyota is cutting cost with their newer vehicles. It sounds like some of you are Toyota guys, do you feel as though Toyota is cutting cost on the newest Tacoma?

    Hello again Andre’! Once again good job. I am constantly pleased with the mileage I get from my Colorado Ext Cab 4x4, V6, that constantly get over the epa ratting. With a average of 24-26 mpg highway depending on altitude and hills, from 17-20 city with an absolute high while hyper mile driving at height on The Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys at a constant cruise control setting of 45 mph at night with very little traffic I was very surprised with a computer and pump math at 32.3 mpg! But while towing my 4,000 lbs Travel Trailer we averaged 15 mpg on a 4,090 mile trip from our last home in Massachusetts, driving the truck loaded up with our personal belongings and stuff we needed for the planned 4-5 months traveling while the new house was being built, that means the wife, two dogs about 20 Very Heavy Duty 50 gal plastic bags we used to keep stuff dry in the open bed, then south to the 55+ community we were building in. Then hooked up to the trailer and headed south during the late winter months. So that average is towing the trailer and exploring without everywhere we found a comping site, some for as long as a week or two. To this day I’ve been totally satisfied and trouble free with the Colorado over these 42 months of a 48 month, 12,000/year lease. That depending on what the number some out to might just buy. But I will be taking a very good long look at these 4, The Ranger, Gladiator, Colorado or new Silverado. I might go all out, with up to a 50k MSRP! Along with a new Chevy InLine 6 cyl Diesel! We shall see.

      Josh Mann the last turbo engine I had was a 86 Volvo 740 turbo. We added a boost controller to increase the power. The turbo needed new seals at 150,000 miles and about 15 years old. Sold it at 210,000 with a minor rod knock. We used conventional oil on it for its whole life. It lasted the lifetime of the vehicle.

    I wonder about the long-term durability/reliability of the Ranger's turbo 4, particularly for people who actually use it to tow/haul. Granted, if I was going to tow/haul, I'd move up to a full size truck, and I figure the vast majority of Ranger buyers are never going to load it down. But for those relatively few people who decide to get the Ranger & really work it...
    Then again, this isn't really a Ranger, given that it's basically the same exterior size as the early 2000s F150 SuperCrew.
    Or maybe I'm just old, because I really want a 2-door, RWD, body-on-frame, actual small pickup. Ford seems to be working on bringing us a FWD/"AWD" C-Max ute, and they'll probably sell loads of them, but it's still not a small pickup. People have been asking for another S-10 size pickup for years now, and all any automaker has been able to come up with is a chopped-off hatchback.

    Before you join the others and compare the pricing to a half or 3/4 ton truck, just remember that these midsize trucks occupy a totally different section of the market, and that even comparing them is asinine. Nobody that is looking at buying a Jeep gladiator rubicon is also looking at an f250 powerstroke. They serve completely different purposes. So using one against the other to gauge price is a fools errand.

    • @bnadit1949
      @bnadit1949 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course no one buying a 1/4 ton truck is looking for a 3/4 or 1 ton truck, but a 1/4 ton and 1/2 ton are very comparable.
      The main reason why 1/4 tons dropped put of favor was because of laws regarding safety, and their small size made reaching those standards nearly impossible for manufacturers so they dropped these vehicles. Just look at the new Ranger compared to the older F-150's from the mid 2000's, they are roughly the same size. Unless you live in a city like New York, San Francisco, or LA the size point is fairly mute. Sure it can be a little bit annoying to maneuver a 1/2 ton in a tight parking lot common in suburbia, but the 1/4 ton's getting so large has made that maneuverability advantage they did have a lot smaller. Unless I knew I was never going use the truck for anything other than hauling groceries and people I'd get a 1/2 ton because it offers more options down the road for me. Sure I might not tow anything right now, but what about in a few years if I get an RV or boat? Suddenly the 1/2 ton is looking a lot better because it can easily tow those things and has more towing features to make my life easier. What if I'm taking my ATV to the beach for spring break? Gonna be a tight fit in either truck, but the 1/2 ton is definitely a lot more capable.
      1/2 tons and 1/4 tons do compete on the same market, in the end though it comes down to a few things; 1) Buyers being ignorant or not thinking ahead, 2) Marketing and salesmen over-hyping the truck, and 3) Peoples needs changing.
      Of the three things I just said only the last one is really a logical one. If you lost your job and went from being a desk jockey to construction worker at a small company in town that would be a big shift and depending on your employer and what is expected of you you might need a larger truck. Maybe you had a mid-life crisis and decided to go explore the world with an RV, but now your 1/4 ton can't tow the one you really want. I could be here all day, but you get the point.

    • @NuclearSandwich7
      @NuclearSandwich7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Bnadit honestly I don’t know where I lost you on my original post. I’m simply saying comparing price is strange due to the different markets they occupy. Most midsize trucks are offered in trims that boast about off-road capability (rubicon, zr2, Trd pro, etc) or fuel economy. While the bigger trucks delve into this as well, this is the bread and butter of the midsize truck market. The larger trucks focus mostly on luxury and towing capacity/ payload. Fuel economy and off-road take a backseat in most offerings. So like I originally said, comparing them isn’t very logical.

    • @merrelljohnson
      @merrelljohnson 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It really isn't. This is the precise reason Ford was apprehensive about bringing the Ranger back. It offers nothing the F-150 can't do better, except size which isn't really that big of a deal for most truck owners.

    • @NuclearSandwich7
      @NuclearSandwich7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Merrell Johnson is that the reason? Or is it that they are offering the same power plant, Better fuel economy, and a high enough towing rating for a large sum of their f150 customers? Ford is concerned with keeping f150 sales high for the sake of it being the number one selling vehicle. The ranger will cut into that.
