JCiceroM, to be exact, South Carolina has two officially recognized and adopted state songs. Henry Timrod was a poet - not a songwriter. Mr. Timrod's poem was edited by G.R. Goodwin and then set to music by Anne Curtis Burgess. It is that song which is known as "Carolina" and was adopted as the official state song by the General Assembly of South Carolina on Feb. 11, 1911.
I'm doing a project on South Carolina. Working on my tri-fold now. If any of you have ideas for something I could add to it, that would be greatly appreciated!! I'm pretty sure that while I present my project, I will be playing this song in the background! I LOVE IT!
This song was written by my College roommates Hank Martin and Buzz Selected. it is a beautiful song, and represents their home state South Carolina well.
However, "South Carolina on My Mind" (composed and recorded by native South Carolinians Hank Martin and Buzz Arledge) was designated as the official State Song in 1984 by Act Number 302 (Mar. 8, 1984) of the General Assembly of South Carolina. So legislatively, South Carolina truly has two official state songs.
Writing the song and owning the RIGHTS to the publishing are two different things. Michael owns the Beatles catalog. he didn't write a single song. Perhaps you should get more info about how publishing works. Enjoy your day.
