Your are a doll. Excellent video. Have not played since I was in high school in 1959. Always had a plastic clarinet. My first one was all aluminum in 1953. After all these years, it is time to relive my childhood so I bought a wood Buffet and a Selmer. My mind feels like I am 17 gain. My body thinks my mind is crazy. Playing again is such fun but so many things have changed. There are sooooo many mouthpieces and reeds to chose from. Your video brought me back on track. Thanks a million.

After of 40 years of clarinet playing, I'm a jazzer, professional saxophonist with the USAF Bands, now retired, I find that I must use Vandoren traditional Blue box 3 with my jazz setup Vandoren 5JB, and 3.5 with my classical setup. Selmer HS*

Thank you for your information. I'm 3 weeks into learning the clarinet. I'm a homeless veteran and I'm hoping that this will help me with my depression.
I bought a used 250 Yamaha clarinet and started with royal blue box 2.5 but the next week I bought a V21 3, because I wanted to reach the higher register more easily.
I also am buying a new clarinet because I think my Yamaha may have some key issues. Don't for sure but I guess having one clarinet for a back up is good. I will get it serviced later to make sure it's ready when I need it.
My new one is an ebonite clarinet and they made it easy to buy by letting me make payments.
I write all this because I feel that the clarinet community is very helpful and as a person with anxiety and depression, I am grateful to you all.
Although I think I'm learning fast, I think I need proper lessons.
I know of many people learning guitar or the piano being self-taught, but never heard of that on the clarinet.
I did gravitate to a double lip embouchure, but who's to say if I'm doing it correctly?
Again thank you and the clarinet community for your videos and help.
    ✌️ From San Diego. 😊

Thank you for your comment! It sounds like you're taking the right steps in getting back with playing the clarinet. I wish nothing but the best for you!

Please anchor your top teeth on top of mouthpiece beak.
      Get some Mouthpiece patches.
this is referred to as standard regular embouchure.
Double lip is no teeth, and much harder to control, and in my opinion unnecessary.
You can run up a mountain full speed too, but why? Unless you are training for the olympics.

@@grantkoeller8911 I'll try both. The double lip seems easier for me to seal the mouthpiece but I will try single lip also.
I think with my new clarinet, it's easier to play so i will try it out.
Learning to read music is my next challenge.
Thank you for the advice. ✌️😊

I like the “grooved floor” purple Vandoren reed case - using them for many years

When I was in the USAF band, (Professional saxophonist) we had alot of great clarinet players, however, Julianna has the most beautiful tone!!!

My company has asked me to make a virtual 3D clarinet piece of software. This sounds like the ultmiate marriage of technology to me. But so much to learn. Hopefully we can make this reed selection process fun and profitable!

Bottom line with cane, the flat side must be flat.
Take a reed knife or single edge razor blade and scrap the flat side flat.

Good call! I just bought a ReedGeek and I'm still learning to work with it. I'll try to post a video about it and how to make adjustments once I feel more comfortable using the tool.

This is is this best video on Reed Selection I've ever watched. Do you have any other tips on Clarinet Playing? And where do you perform?

This is amazing as I am new to the industry and really don't have a go-to video studio for knowledge on reeds and had no knowledge previously on the Goldli-lox (am I spelling that properly) reeds in general thank you so much

Terrific video. I may be misinterpreting this, but on the Vandoren website there is a chart which seems to indicate that the Traditional blue box reed is slightly harder than the V12 and V56. Could you kindly clarify this? Thanks so much!

Hi, I’m so sorry I missed this EXCELLENT question! Yes, looking at the Reeds Technical Elements page on the Vandoren website, vandoren.fr/en/reeds-technical-elements/, I was somewhat confused as well. If you’re referencing the Reed Comparison Index, it does appear that the Traditional Strength 3 is “harder” than the V12, Rue 56, and V21. Depending on your mouthpiece/ligature/clarinet setup, I would suggest going off the “Different Cuts of Clarinet Reeds” at the top of that page and referencing the “Tip/Heel Thickness” measurements. On their website, it says that the Traditional reed measures 0.09 mm at the tip and 2.88 mm at the heel, the V12 reed 0.10 mm at the tip and 3.15 mm at the heel, and the Rue 56 reed 0.11 mm at the tip and 3.25 mm at the heel. To be honest, I’ve never been able to get the Rue 56 reeds to work on my setup, it often felt like blowing on a piece of tree bark. I’ll also note that the Rue 56 and V21 reeds have a “narrower” cut, meaning that the reed blank is filed down on the sides of the reed which can sometimes help with focusing the sound (in theory). I play on a pretty resistant mouthpiece, so I prefer a thinner reed blank like the Traditional reed cut at 2.88 mm. The V12 and Rue 56 reeds use a thicker reed blank, so depending on if you need more “wood” on your reed to balance your sound, you might opt for the V12, Rue 56, or V21. I hope that all made sense? Thanks again!

@@clarinetnotestudio4851 Thank you for your detailed and well reasoned answer. Much appreciated. I also find that certain reeds work better with certain clarinets (in addition to mouthpieces).
LaVoz and Gonzalez FOF are, I find, good alternatives to Vandoren which are excellent.
      Best regards

What would you say is a good reed for the Nuvo Dood
And do you know how I could learn it lol

Hi @Daniel-dj7fh! Thanks for asking the question! If you are brand new to the clarinet world, I would probably recommend using the Vandoren Traditional Box for Bb Clarinet Strength 2.5 (if you find it too easy to make a sound on the 2.5 reeds, I would recommend sizing up to strength 3). I found this website where you can order 3 reeds at a time if you want to order strength 2.5 and 3. It will give you a better idea of what to order: reedsforless.com/products/vandoren-clarinet-reeds-bb?variant=47662911455531
I would also recommend upgrading your mouthpiece to either a Yamaha 4C: tinyurl.com/mucmxzbn
or the Vandoren 5rV: tinyurl.com/5e3actb3 or Vandoren B45:tinyurl.com/2xanh2rw. I would also recommend upgrading your ligature to one of the Bonade clarinet ligatures: rb.gy/d8hhj or rb.gy/aqpkv. If you live in the United States and want in-person lessons, I highly recommend connecting with a teacher through the Music Teachers National Association: www.mtna.org/MTNA/FindATeacherAddress.aspx. You can also check out the many wonderful videos on TH-cam by other clarinet creators, here are some of my favorites: Clarinet Mentors, Caly’s Clarinet Channel, Clarinet Ninja, John Kurokawa, Earspasm Music. I also have a lot of resources on my website if you’re curious: clarinetnotestudio.com/resources/. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching!
