How to use the Integrating Factor Method (First Order Linear ODE)

  • Steps on how to use the Integrating Factor Method to solve first order linear differential equations (ODE)
The first step is to make sure your first order linear ODE is in the form: dy/dx + P(x)y = Q(x) where P(x) and Q(x) are functions of x or a constant.
The next step is to find the integrating factor which is given by e raised to the integral of P(x).
The integrating factor then needs to be multiplied throughout the problem question. The equation can now be solved by integrating both sides with respect to x and dividing through by the integrating factor.

This is the easiest way to learn this one . Sometimes it pays to show them how easy it is to do the actual math, then go back and show them in detail what is going on. Sometimes it is easier to show them the theory, then the problem because the theory is important in actually completing the math. Sometimes doing it side by side is the best way theory-problem.
