Welcome to my travel vlog, where I take you on a journey to the ancient Ashta Bhairav Temple located in the mountainous area of Ukhimath in Uttarakhand. This is a one-of-a-kind temple where you can witness eight Bhairavs in a single place. It is a Siddh Tantrik Peeth of Kedarkhand and one of the three famous Siddh Tantrik Peeths.
Although I have visited Ukhimath several times, I was not aware of this hidden gem earlier. However, during my recent visit, I got a chance to explore this magnificent temple with my friend Chetan. We started early in the morning and reached the temple after crossing some step fields on a narrow path. From the backside of the temple, you can see the famous Omkareshwar Temple of Ukhimath.
The Ashta Bhairav Temple is a sight to behold with its colorful flags and tied clothes of different hues. However, I was taken aback when I saw some goat skulls tied to the entry gate with bells. It is a practice of animal sacrifice that takes place at this tantrik peeth, which I personally do not support.
Upon entering the temple, we were greeted by the priest, Thakur Deepak Singh Kunwar, who gave us a guided tour of the Ashta Bhairav Temple along with its history and significance. He showed us all the eight Bhairavs of the temple located at Dhawalgiri. Later, he took us to another part of the temple where all eight Bhairav idols are worshiped at a single place along with some more god-goddess idols.
Priest Thakur Deepak Singh Kunwar belongs to the ruler clan of Garhwal and narrated how his ancestors got the privilege of worshiping this Ashta Bhairav temple a hundred years ago. He showed us an ancient sword with some written text, which was in a language that nobody knew. Furthermore, he displayed some old weapons, statues, and utensils with written text from ancient times.
It was interesting to know that he cannot do service or a job for someone else as he serves Ashta Bhairav. He also runs a jyotish office for his livelihood, and if you need any advice or have any doubts, you can contact him on the number provided in this vlog.
The temple is situated on the outskirts of Ukhimath and is surrounded by stunning mountain views. It is believed that the temple was built during the time of the Pandavas and is dedicated to Lord Shiva's manifestation as Bhairav. The eight Bhairavs present in the temple are said to represent the eight directions and are worshiped by devotees seeking blessings and protection.
Apart from the Bhairavs, the temple also houses other idols of various gods and goddesses. The temple's vibrant decorations and colorful flags add to the overall spiritual ambiance of the place.
Visiting the Ashta Bhairav Temple can be an enriching experience, especially for those interested in history, culture, and spirituality. The temple's serene atmosphere, stunning views, and rich history make it an ideal destination for anyone seeking a unique and memorable travel experience.
The day we visited the temple was windy and cloudy, but the overall experience was mesmerizing. The Ashta Bhairav Temple is a must-visit place for anyone visiting Ukhimath. Jai ho Asht Bhairav ki!
