    The Belgian Sheepdog also known as the Groenendael, is a, ancient and versatile herding dog. The breed originating in Belgium is a traditional herding dog that has 4 varieties, The Groenendael, Malinois, Tervuren, and Laekenois.
    Peggy Richter is a Belgian Sheepdog fancier that trains and conditions her dogs at On The Lamb Ranch, in Camarillo, Ca. In this video Peggy runs down everything about Groenendaels from the breeds history, health, and working ability.

    PLEASE do an all about living with the Belgian sheepdog! I know they’re technically the same breed as the Malinois but after talking to a few Groenendael owners I’ve learned that the 4 Belgian Shepherd types are a bit different in temperament and energy level, etc

      I recently adopted a five yr male and 3yr female (both AKC registered, rescued from a horrifffic dangerous hoarding situation.) and I would say they are very different. So much more chill. They do not snap. I am going to meet the other 17 that were locked in this house, but I hear they are also so far scared but sweet. So for a situation where they were living in scarcity and against eachother they are unbelievably docile. Different than mals. But I hear long haired German shepherds are usually more laid back than short hairs. They are so beautiful, and sensitive. Better for herding and work than protection I would say (especially their frame).

    Had a Groenendal for more than 13 years. She was the best dog ! I feel much love when I watch the Dogs in the Video. I really miss her. She travelled whith me and my son through Europe, always protective and by our side. We had much Fun going by Bike. She did run at the Trottoir me in the street and she just looked if I still agree. We had telepathic connection.

    I grew up in the 1970's and we got a 1 year old female Belgiun Groenendael Sheepdog we called Renee. Renee was the best dog I ever owned. Smart, loved people, an amazing guard dog. I highly recommend them, They have a great nature and their fur does not smell. They only shed a tiny bit and are remarkably clean dogs. The biggest mistake we made with Renee was not giving her stuff to do...training her to fetch, jump around and through stuff, and tricks was what these dogs love. As a result Renee put on weight and died at only age 12.

    I hope that we can keep on protecting Groenendaels and Tervurens; I would hate to see them being overbred like the German shepherd and Malinois. They are way to gorgeous and adorable to end up in shelters.

    I've just adopted a Belgian shepherd Groenendael that was rescued from Spain. She was terribly sick with heart worm, but now she's healthy and the sweetest dog I've ever owned. She's by my side constantly, and responds to training like a star student. Unfortunately she hates other dogs, so our numerous daily walks are off the beaten track, which she loves.

    I had a gray groenendael. Best dog I have ever had. She died of cancer a week ago, but she was loyal and playful until the day she died. Everyone should experience this dog once in their life. They are so loving, will follow you everywhere, wants to be by your side all the time. The way she described the breed was good :) So energetic but can also be calm, but the second something happens they are up and going in a second! They are also kind with children. I would recommend a groenendael or a tervueren if you want a companion dog.

    • @0316asdfjkl

      Do ypu know if they would be good on trails with horses? I want a dog that can walk along with us on rides. I worry that he/she would overheat. I would also take the dog to work daily so i need an animal that would be calm with older adults.

    • @kebbesan
      @kebbesan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@0316asdfjkl They fit the description. My terv is really calm inside and blow off steam once he gets to play outside. Very intelligent dog, very sensitive, and can interact with any kind of pet if used to it (like any dog).
      They won’t over heat cause their fur will adapt depending on the weather. If you prefer a short haired sheperd dog anyway (still with a calm temper), the smooth collie might be for you.
      You’ll have to socialize your Belgian shepherd A LOT though, cause some can be skittish

    Peggy was a good choice for knowledge on this breed. And I appreciate her honesty in the limitations on the stock they can handle. They simply aren't the popular choice for people breeding for everyman working dogs to handle harder stock. Curs, border collies, kelpies, and others are being bred more commonly for harder temperaments to move tough cattle and even harder rams. Most people who try any tending style herding with these guys, are hobbyists or very small boutique farmers.
    Groenies in the USA at least, are mostly found in the show set and the temperament has been softened to a large degree. Look out for very spooky dogs. It's far too common.
    There ARE people dedicated to reviving harder working ability in this type, so that it's not just the malinois doing well. Peggy's website has some links to get folks started. A GOOD Belgian with a solid temperament can be a real treasure.

    • @Kuymal
      @Kuymal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      can agree regarding cattle, but I've yet to see a ram back down any of my dogs. As for tending, used to do this regularly with my Nyjel to save buying hay. they just weren't bred for low heel and aren't "range cattle" dogs. OTOH, not too many kelpies, BCs etc that will herd your sheep and deal summarily with anyone trying to steal them or mug you.

    • @Janeway1269
      @Janeway1269 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Very true. BCs and kelpies are supposed to be bred to be very human friendly. I've heard of the odd kelpie defending it's owner, but it's not the norm or the intention behind that breed. Belgians are more multi purpose while BCs and kelpies are specialists.

      I am in love with these dogs (Tervuren mostly), but am concerned about the exercise requirements (something that people over here in Sweden tend to exaggerate in any dog). Would a Belgian be fine with two proper walks per day, small brain exercises like food search, and some obedience/freestyle training, or are they just too much dog?

    • @wilmaknight9127

      I think that nervous disposition is becoming more frequent in all shepherd breeds, not good, but I do tend to wonder if it's genetics or inbreeding , I know that sounds a stupid way to phrase it, I can't think how to put it better sorry, hope you get what I mean. Beautiful dogs, iam a traditional square back GSD owner.i prefer that square back to the slope which these dogs never show. Beautiful ...

      We lost our best friend and beloved Groenendael Charlie. He was a rescue dog and very very smart and easy to train. They are absolutely amazing dogs and you'll never go wrong with it as compared to a German Shepherd. They love anything that you do. We just purchased another male we were so heart broken in losing Charlie. Bear was house broken in 1 week and after 3 weeks he's learned to sit, stay, down and fetch, drop, leash trained and more. I am amazed at how much he has learned in such a short time. What a fantastic experience. I am also disabled and he will be trained as a service dog. He's a great companion for me already. I had a Groenendael mix for just short of eleven years. The other breed that got in there was a mystery; I never bothered to get Kira DNA tested. But she did fine in an apartment, including when I went off to work. She was around 75 - 80 lbs., and had a rounded head, but otherwise looked like a Belgian Sheepdog. I wonder if she might have been part Newfoundland.
    We did walk a LOT. I trained her to jump through a hoop to earn her dinner, which she would also do for fun. She managed to donate 36 units of blood at Dove Lewis. (If you search for "dog blood donation" you'll find a video of Kira giving a unit.)

Not recommended unless you can spend a lot of time with your Groendael. Our 4 pound shelter pup grew to a trim 66 lbs, with very high energy and focus. She loves people but barks at/ chases all other animals instinctively - birds, squirrels, coyotes, black bears, insects, dogs and cats.

      I agree ,I hate the kennel club ideas of what's right in a dog, they appear to go on what one or 2 ppl would consider a good looking dog, rather than health and looks and what chars statistics they could produce down the line. They are all about looks alone which is so wrong . Too many breeds having way too many health issues. The money is too important these days , so inbreeding becoming a huge deal, I hope they keep his breed as natural as possible . Stunning dog.

    You should do a video on Ca de Bou. If you can find one. I've lived with one for almost eight years now, the first puppy I raised myself, and there are about 50 of them here in Sweden but not many more (possibly fewer) in the United States.
    Also Chow Chow. They are really good guard dogs, and seem underrated and misrepresented, thought of as a "mean" dog just meant for show.

    I feel her, a lot of schutzhund clubs don't want anything other then german shepherds and mals involved. Even if you just wanna hobby at their club they just don't want any other breed near their club.

      @littleprincess8526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most people don't even see the difference between a Tervuren and a German shepherd. A lot think that the Groenendael is a black German shepherd. My neighbors thought they had a German shepherd and it was a Tervuren. All these dogs including the Dutch shepherd all come from the same ancestors. They are basically the same. High energy, highly intelligent, needs lots of training, playtime mental stimulation.

    • @littleprincess8526
      @littleprincess8526 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@wholesome122 Totally not they are very different. Groenendaels are real family pets and they can be highly energetic but cuddle bears indoor, while Malinois don't have an off switch. Even inside they love to be buzy. If they get bored they tear your house down. A Groenendael or Tervuren would never do that.

      They’re smart enough, and willing to serve but they aren’t as inclined to aggression and are fairly lightweight they’re bite wouldn’t be desirable for home protection

    • @Victoria-ot5om
      @Victoria-ot5om 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Frida In my experience Groenendaels tend to be far more mellow than Malinois. Mals are intense dogs and have very strong working drives; they’re always “on”. Groenendaels are smart and need to be exercised, but they’re a bit easier to get to chill out.

    • @deidrezbiegien5549

      Huge difference. Malinous are bred for high intensity. Would not have around toddlers. As always dogs temperament is up to the breeders.

      @@cannedcrickets9932 There are many types of wolves. European wolves are short-legged and barrel-chested compared to the lanky North American wolves. Ear size and coat type vary widely too. Just compare a Mexican wolf to an Arctic and an Indian.

      Frida ....We have a subspecies of wolf that is fairly abundant where we live on Vancouver Island, Canada. There are estimated to be
