  • New England Patriots 2024 Rookie Class Analysis David Wallis Wide Receiver Randolph Macon
David Wallis, a 6’ 184 lbs wide receiver from DIII Randolph Macon, possesses attributes that make an intriguing UDFA pick-up. Wallis was a rookie mini-camp invite who reportedly got a lot of reps that weekend. I made note of that, but I just figured it was because there was a lack of slot-type receivers in the rookie class and the Patriots needed a guy to fill that spot to give Drake and Milton reps with that receiver type. Well, I guess David showcased his skills enough to bring him in to challenge some of the guys in a VERY crowded receiver room. David has legitimate sprinter's acceleration and ran a 4.49-second 40-yard dash at his pro day, which isn’t blazing fast… but he did have a 1.53 10-yard split, which is very quick. His early acceleration allows him to blow past mismatched cornerbacks from the slot and the perimeter, and his athletic, loose movements enable him to explode out of breaks, creating substantial separation. Wallis is proficient in running both in and out-breaking routes and can work all three levels of the field from a variety of alignments. He has shown the ability to finish catches across the middle and has a good awareness of safety locations when working in the deep middle.

The most he does is the Practice Squad. But Who Knows.

He runs so upright he’s almost leaning backwards. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a receiver run quite that high, but his quickness is very good…he honestly looks almost as quick as Douglas in drills.

His initial quickness is very close to, if not equal. Plus, his redirection ability is comparable. Him and Douglas are really the only guys on the roster that move like that. He might stick around to be Pop insurance.
