    Please do further research. The main reason Martin Luther left the Catholic Church was because he asked permission to sell indulgences but was declined by the bishop because the latter was suspicious of his motive as he already had relationship with a nun. And because of the bishop's refusal to his request, he then advocated to stop all indulgences and removed 7 books in the original bible as those 7 books mention about indulgence and intercessory prayers for our loved ones and brethren who already passed away. Friends, as a former protestant, we not only believe in our pastors without doing research to prove what we are told about.

    “The drama of Luther walking through Wittenberg with his hammer and his nails is very, very unlikely to have happened,” says Professor Andrew Pettegree, an expert on the Reformation from the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. “The castle church door was the normal noticeboard of the university. This was not an act of defiance on Luther’s part, it was simply what you did to make a formal publication. It would probably have been pasted to the door rather than nailed up.”
    Peter Marshall would go even further. A historian of the Reformation at Warwick University, England, he believes there’s a strong case to be made that the Theses were never posted at all, and that the story was invented to suit the political needs of people who came later. “The incident was first recorded nearly 30 years after,” he says. “Luther himself never mentioned it. There was very little discussion of the nailing of the Theses before the first Reformation anniversary of 1617.”

      I think a better translation would be "of" or "from", so I gve the full quote from Ephesians 2 in Latin Vulgate and English Douay Rheims:
      *8 Gratia enim estis salvati per fidem, et hoc non ex vobis : Dei enim donum est : 9 non ex operibus, ut ne quis glorietur. 10 Ipsius enim sumus factura, creati in Christo Jesu in operibus bonis, quae praeparavit Deus ut in illis ambulemus.*
      *8 For by grace you are saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, for it is the gift of God; 9 Not of works, that no man may glory. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus in good works, which God hath prepared that we should walk in them.*

    0:51 _"the belief that a believer could buy an indulgence"_
    Can you document that as being a belief which was around for Luther to criticise?
    Indulgences were given for good works, and then and there certain types of alms were among these, does not mean anyone said indulgences could be bought.

    HEBREWS 13:17
    “Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning …” if you believe in the Bible alone, you’d have to explain why Luther was right to disobey the church and go out on his own biblically. The entire foundation of protestant ism hinges on this passage, Luther was disobedient, and even if if he were right with some of his points, which he was on some, they should’ve been surrendered at the feet of the leaders above him, he could have reformed the church from the inside out! The Bible does not give mention of any exception to the following of the above mentioned passage. The Bible doesn’t say submit to your leaders except for….! Interestingly, enough being a former protestant for 25 years I have yet to be part of a church body or see a body that in someway doesn’t or disobey church leadership throughout the course of time within the community. Church split after Church split, The protestant church rides or dies with this un escapable passage. It is doomed to continue to repeat this cycle because at its core beginning it was founded on disobedience, and lack of respect for authority.

    41. Apostolic[70] pardons are to be preached with caution, lest the people may falsely think them preferable to other good works of love.
    42. Christians are to be taught that the pope does not intend the buying of pardons to be compared in any way to works of mercy.
    43. Christians are to be taught that he who gives to the poor or lends to the needy does a better work than buying pardons;
    44. Because love grows by works of love, and man becomes better; but by pardons man does not grow better, only more free from penalty.

Jerome translated it from the Latin rather than returning to the Greek which tells us Mary was "favored with grace". Back to the main story. If we had to be cleansed there was no purpose for Christ to go to the cross as it was His blood that cleansed us. A Christian is saved, it's our works that go to the fire. 1 Cor. 3:1 For no one can lay another foundation than that which was laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, or stubble, 13 each one’s work will be revealed. For the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on the foundation endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss. But he himself will be saved, still going through the fire.

      God gave us His word and everything we need is in it for salvation and nothing outside scripture can save us, Sound like all we need is scripture to be saved which by the way is the keys to the kingdom of God.
      I just confessed Jesus as Lord and savior on the bus, I step of and get hit by a car and die, am I saved? I have no works. Does my works justify my salvation to God or man? The minute I am saved my name is in the Book of Life. Any works done, which by the way are not our works but Christ working through us, justifies our salvation to man not God. Works does not save anyone but it justifies man. Sort of like Baptism of the Holy Spirit. 1:02 I just checked wikisource.
    In the 95 thesis, there is no contestation against Purgatory existing, and there is no pretense that the Purgatory is not mentioned in Scripture.
    One part of contestation was this passage, theses 16 through 20:
    16. Hell, purgatory, and heaven seem to differ as do despair, almost-despair, and the assurance of safety.
    17. With souls in purgatory it seems necessary that horror should grow less and love increase.
    18. It seems unproved, either by reason or Scripture, that they are outside the state of merit, that is to say, of increasing love.
    19. Again, it seems unproved that they, or at least that all of them, are certain or assured of their own blessedness, though we may be quite certain of it.
    20. Therefore by "full remission of all penalties" the pope means not actually "of all," but only of those imposed by himself.
    21. Therefore those preachers of indulgences are in error, who say that by the pope's indulgences a man is freed from every penalty, and saved;
    22. Whereas he remits to souls in purgatory no penalty which, according to the canons, they would have had to pay in this life.
    As you can see, Luther presumes 1) there are souls in Purgatory, 2) as they can still continue sanctification, they should not want to get time off from it, 3) a contestation of what the Church can or cannot remit by an Indulgence.
