I was a fan of SRK Cycles and Bikes and Beards channels long before I found Matt’s Off Road Recovery. The Golden Nugget project introduced me to Fab Rats, Robbie Layton, Tom Tom, and Bleepin’ Jeep. I am really glad you guys hooked up and got together on these jobs. I think what you guys are doing for Ed is FANTASTIC!
It's not just you getting the wrong parts, I don't consider it a project unless 1, I bleed, and 2. I have to go to the parts store at least twice. keep up the good work.
Exactly. As far as I can see, Paul is way ahead of most of us. At least he has the know how and the shop how to fix most of it without the venerable multiple parts runs extravaganzas.
'You're not the only one with that kind of luck, that happens to me most of the time when I am rebuilding vehicles! Keep up the good work, don't care what the haters say!
You’re not alone. Good service is near impossible around my neck of the woods. I feel your pain. To quote a wise and experienced older man,”Very seldom do you find an ideal situation.”

Love to see how you make things work, Paul.. Sending much love and prayers with angels to watch over and guide you ❤🙏👼👼🙏❤
Kudos to editing! I knew from the music choice starting at the taper drill, that some mulligans were coming. And I never get tired of seeing awesome lathe work.
I love the comment "it'll be straightforward and easy" as he repeats the process at least three times getting the grease applied and hole drilled. Love the show, and wouldn't want it over-produced even if it would be cleaner. It would just take out the human aspect of what every other person out there has to actually go through in their own garages.
I completed my first engine rebuild the other month and bought rockers that fit EVERY small block Chevy motor except for the Vortex, which is what I've got. I also double-purchased too many gaskets, haha
Paul, with so many components and so many standards all you can do is increase your knowledge in what works and fits and what does not. The wisdom is exponential with what you are accomplishing. HooRaa!
If it was me I'd have probably installed those Jeep hood latches facing the other direction so the latch swings down to close. But that's just me and I love that FJ Paul. Keep up the good work!
I always heard that skill is knowing techniques and procedures to get something done. But, compensating/hiding the mistakes is artistry. In my shop, besides making lots off goofy mistakes, my motto is "if it can get caught on something, it will !!". Great video.
Funny thing Paul is most people would give up when they get the wrong parts you keep going and get the job done and that’s the best part of FAB RATS!!!!!!
Just a friendly hint: I got a small shard of steel in my eye, doing lathe work. I had to go back to the eye doctor every 2 days and get my eyeball peeled (cornea) because the steel had rusted and stained my eyeball between the layers of my cornea. Imagine getting your eyeball peeled every two days for 2 weeks and you'll probably remember to wear your safety glasses. Just sayin'...
Just had a friend get metal removed out of his eye Tuesday. Like you he had rust. He said he finally opened his box of safety glasses and will now use them. Some learn by others mistakes, while others by their own with a select few never learn. Pick your category, just know others are watching while judging, of course.
Hello from Scotland. I’m 100% a Triumph guy (I’ve had my Herald for +30 years). It’s totally not my fault (despite what my wife says) that our 18 year old son spent all the spare time from his studies pulling every shift he could from a job he doesn’t much love just so he could scrape the money together to buy the cheapest Triumph Spitfire in the country. The whole 'one step forwards, two steps back - never mind we'll figure it out' ethos as we bring it back from the brink is alive and kicking in the Highlands too. Love what you do - keep doing what you love.
You're DEFINITELY not the only one to buy parts that didn't work right out of the box. My machined thermostat housing never sealed to my coolant housing, and I couldn't fix a MASSIVE coolant leak without putting a factory one back on.
I quite often have to make some brand new part work by modifying it in some way. My wife thinks I'm just never satisfied, but it seems very little is "bolt on" ready.
@@kylancook3477 Yup, that ONE vehicle. I worked in the auto industry for years and they make tons of small changes throughout the year - supplier changes due to shortages, cost savings, etc. Those little changes go unnoticed to all but the wrench-turners.
That is one hell of a steering arm man. Holy crap! And no, you're not. Almost every single time I start twisting wrenches, I have to make sure I have a backup ride to get to the parts store. I think they do it on purpose, to get us to buy gloves, and ratchets, and 10mm sockets, and whatever else they can put on the candy rack at the register, lol
"Measure twice, cut once." and "Better looking at it than for it." Are two of the best pieces of advice from my Dad in all the years I worked with him on everything from electrics to plumbing , houses to vehicles.
I’ve built a few strokers. I’ve found that you can space the windage tray away from the crank with a washer or two (depending on the thickness) between the head of the stud and the tray. Also you may have to modify the foot on the oil pickup. Saves cutting up the windage tray.
10:38 That arm is soooo close to that tire - way more than I'd be all that comfortable with. I'm wondering if it's going to foul occasionally when you air down and start beating on rocks. You _sure_ you don't have them on the wrong sides? That would make more sense, as the steering arm pivot is usually intended to be inboard of the ball joints.
Don't feel bad. You are definitely not the only one. Nearly everything I get needs to be tweaked or modified in order to work. It never fails. Love the videos!
Love watching your show! Michelle and Randal are both great! My dad waswas never very mechanically inclined, but tried to help me with my first truck. It was a 1973 Chevy Cheyenne with a 350. I spent countless hours working on that thing never having a clue what I was doing. Didn't have TH-cam to look up how to do stuff in 1994. I can only imagine the kind of things I would have upgraded and done if I would have had it.
After I started watching you tube fix it videos, I soon realized "dang I am not the only one that happens to". So yes every project I work on has some "special" moments. Sometimes its just a bolt or socket that hit floor and caused an hour long search.
It never fails, every time I order parts Murphy shows up and says "I hate you Charlie Brown", kicks me in the testicles and runs off. We should start a club and have cool jackets.
Given that Paul does a lot by using his "eyecrometer" when doing his fabrications, I would imagine that a lot of off the shelf parts will not exactly fit right away. But he does a great job at making what he has, fit and do the job.
The FJ with an LS that actually runs on 8 cylinders is going to be a rock crawling beast! Love your videos, thanks for sharing! Btw, glad I’m not the only one who misplaces parts and get the wrong ones.
I’m always amazed how easy you make engine builds look. I can’t wait to break down my Mopar 318 magnum for a rebuild. It’ll be my first engine rebuild.
From Fairbanks, Alaska USA I used to hate doing mechanical work, If I didn't do it wrong, didn't know how to do it, I would break something, lose something or just have a mess. So no you're not the only one who makes mistakes, the great part is that you know how to fix it and have the means (equipment and experience) to make it work. I on the other hand, never gained those necessary components. 🤪🤪
I’m with you on “buying parts”. Seems when you need it most, they provide the least reliable service. Everything is being blamed on the supply chain, bah! Enjoying the videos.
Missin the longer videos! But yep great to the Yota build. Love watching you work on it, can't wait to see the rest of the LS built. God bless have a great weekend!
Michael, you have me thinking of Robby Layton who often mentions Hillbilly's 'Monkey Hands' because he is so strong. Robby is a funny guy and his channel is a great addition to the MORR, Fab Rats, Trial Mater, Mischief Maker, Casey LaDelle type TH-cam channels. Heck, there is getting to be quite a list of them. I don't count the 'other Casey' who used to be best buddies with Matt. He suddenly went mad and his channel became unwatchable.
I was interested so just checked Casey's ORR on Social Blade, and it looks like his channel is dying a death. He only has 50K subs now, which I am sure is less than he had a year ago.
I looked up What FJ stands for yesterday. The F is for engine type (F is for standard fuel or B for diesel) and the J stands for Jeep. Correct Hood Latches Acquired! Thanks for sharing
I honestly don't know what some of these suppliers and companies are thinking, yes mistakes and accidents can happen , but parts of a kit not fitting together when everything comes from one company. Sometimes it is really frustrating, especially before a race or trying to meet a deadline. This is why you don't throw anything out, so you can fab it to use on something else.
100% on not throwing anything away! I always keep the old parts because most of the time I'm always trying to upgrade aka I can't leave anything alone.
After I retired I took a part time job delivering auto parts from a major auto parts retailer. At times I was embarrassed because of the high percentage of the times that I was given the wrong part to deliver. It caused the repairman to get really upset and I can certainly understand why. That is the main reason that when I go to pick up parts for my own vehicle that if at all possible I take the old parts with me so I can match them up in the store.
Im on my 4th starter on my 454. First one had no bushing in the nose cone and worked for about 4 starts. Secound one was so far off on the engagement i couldn't put enough shims on the inside to get it far enough away from the flywheel to work 3rd one same thing . 4th one has as many shims as i can get on the outside to get it close enough to the flywheel and is still too far away. All the same part number starters from oriles. Just junk. Im not even going to take it back just going to go get an old one from the junk yard that don't need shims and have it rebuilt. Im done with fighting with cheap parts store starters.
Paul you are special. The way you like doing things twice. But no I also always end up having to adjust the parts I order. Can't wait to see the new motor going in.
I would love to see some engine re-builds without the time lapse. Maybe on a second channel for the "boring" stuff that would be more educational for us laymen?
LOVE THE CONTENT..YOU REMIND ME OF JOHN WAYNE....YA'LL ARE FUNNY, FAMILY, AND BIG HEARTED... NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE OFF ROAD/ROCK CLIMBER COMMUNITY, SO THANKS FOR SHARING. Nice new LS can't wait to see a 4 wheel burnout, that little o-ring keeper doohickey is a must, Paul couldn't find a nut spike's are gone it was a nutty day lol, Gracie is a true country girl didn't even look to be in pain, great video God bless ya'll at Fab Rat's 😉👍
I agree with Paul. I used to work on my vehicle never failed you go get the part get home and it was wrong I have to go back and get the right part. You have a great family I really enjoy watching Paul work and I don’t like people being so critical.
Can't afford EJS this year but the wife lady and I will definitely be there next year.Looking forward to all the videos that will be coming soon from EJS. Thank you for your time.
No Paul it must be just you because it never happens to me, NOT!!! It happens quite often and even at that, you are special! LOL!!! Thanks for taking us along in your videos. J.R.
I'm so glad you found some of that green paint for that block. I wish you had some for the last motor you built instead of the red orange color. Best wishes for a speedy recovery for your daughter and dog.
right parts hahaha the story that never ends, especially when you try to buy something from a dealer who doesn't depend on part number, and for the screws always bring longer, cut it better than weld it, good to see the FJ again, it's really a piece of art.
Having the wrong parts is just an opportunity for your creative genius to shine through! Whenever possible, I put bolts downward (head of the bolt up and nut on the bottom). My logic is if the nut comes off, the bolt won't just fall out and maybe, just maybe this will give you a few seconds to stop before a major event occures!
Parts store back home was owned by an old friend of my dad. With no computers the counter was lined with parts catalogs the guy had to go through from one end to the other to look up a part number. Dad swore all that time spent going through those catalogs was to make sure we’d have to come back and exchange, just to get us back in the shop. Never fail - wrong part every time
When you are at EJS look for 74Weld. They have jeeps on portals now. I would love to see you both connect and see what they can do! Thank you for sharing what you do with us!
I picked up a motor mount for an old Honda Accord I have and of course things didn't quilt line up. I'm with you there. Sometimes you just have to make it work. A little grinding and soon enough everything went back together just fine. It's not just you Paul.
I have said 'I can make this work' a lot, you're not alone! I have so much storage full of 'I might need it someday' I set my wife off as soon as I say the words!
You are not the only one. I hate making additional trips to the parts store or having to deal with mailing parts back so I make it fit as crudely as possible
Love you're channel. Randel adds to it he's starting to really fit in. Love your truck. Can't wait to see you get nugget done you are going to make a man's day a many more. Great family entertainment. You're wife becoming quite the driver.
Your special Paul.. I’ve never special ordered a part that turns out to be the wrong one. I don’t even have a box full of new useless parts that I’m to embarrassed to scrap. Pretty sure you are one of a kind!
I was a little old man sitting around being stale, and I want you know watching your channel has given me ambition to tinker with stuff I’ve been saving forever. Restored a 1984 ginormous tiller. or perhaps "cotter pin / safety wire" to prevent the "falling off" in the first place? Paul will get it right I'm pretty sure.

Love you guys video's. Look forward every wed., fri., and sunday to watch new videos. Just curious, when do you plan to have the FJ painted?
Paul talks about the pets as if he keeps them around for his kids, but he secretly loves them just as much! ❤🐾❤
I think one of his older videos do show assembling an engine.
IMO the best engine rebuild for explaining detail is on the Vice Grip Garage TH-cam channel
LOVE THE CONTENT..YOU REMIND ME OF JOHN WAYNE....YA'LL ARE FUNNY, FAMILY, AND BIG HEARTED... NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT THE OFF ROAD/ROCK CLIMBER COMMUNITY, SO THANKS FOR SHARING. Do you ever think you'll get around to addressing the broken windshield? There's something that needs attention and will vastly improve your point of view.
Think in this vid he mentioned that he had one on the way.
All about perspective
Yes, that has been driving me crazy. I couldn't stand peering out through all those cracks. Thank goodness he's finally getting one!
You are special my friend, when it comes to parts. Thanks fir sharing.
I agree with Paul. I used to work on my vehicle never failed you go get the part get home and it was wrong I have to go back and get the right part. You have a great family I really enjoy watching Paul work and I don’t like people being so critical.
Thanks for letting me in!! Love watching goog people do good things
Can't afford EJS this year but the wife lady and I will definitely be there next year.Looking forward to all the videos that will be coming soon from EJS. Thank you for your time.
What an awesome 4x4 you are creating there.
Another reason why I like watching Paul working. Is because if I missed something the first time. I know that he will do it again.
77 FJ40 owner here. Totally agree about the hood latches.
Love the Fab Rats family! Keep up the great work. I enjoy sitting down with my kids and watching your videos.
No Paul it must be just you because it never happens to me, NOT!!! It happens quite often and even at that, you are special! LOL!!! Thanks for taking us along in your videos. J.R.
YOTA IS A BAD TO THE BONE CRAWLER. Love watching the build. Awesome machine.
You are not the “only one “ you are one of many!! I am too! lol Keep the videos coming Paul and all. Great stuff!! Stay safe everyone. Jim
nice job Paul, you have a wonderful family .... always enjoy your videos
Every time you start that old lathe I worry someone is going to get hurt. Put a guard around the chain and gears, fingers are hard to replace.
More FJ Videos!
Cant wait to see the "final project" here!
Robbie needs to give it a bad ass paint job!
The FJ is looking good keep the videos rolling.
It's unbelievable how much you know!!!!
You make it all seem pretty effortless👊🏻
Sweet looking FJ can't wait to hear it when you get the new motor in it God bless
You are by yourself. You are unique. Get over it, already. I love watching you work.
Totally agree with the hod latches!
You are not the only one. I hate making additional trips to the parts store or having to deal with mailing parts back so I make it fit as crudely as possible
Your not the only one that dosent get parts that don't work or are wrong, I have the problem all the time. Good luck. Great videos !!!!
