Love seeing the embrace of general fitness in the natty lifting community. This is how you maintain a lifetime relationship with fitness. Being flexible and allowing goals to change - not being insane with specificity for no reason.

General Fitness is the way to go. There is no rule that reads you have to focus on one particular exercise, that's just an individual's choice to focus on one aspect.

Most of your running should be in Zone 2 and 3. But you should also do some internal training at Zone 4 and 5. You're going to have to push yourself mentally and physically if you want real progress. That applies to the gym, and the track.

I’m a collegiate distance runner. Your channel, Zack Telander, and Sika Strength have helped improve my running by teaching me how to get stronger to improve my racing. On top of that the psychology you guys apply to lifting has helped me in running. So thank you for that! You guys were the outside influences to expose me to a method of exercise I will do for the rest of my life. I think people get stuck in labeling themselves As only a runner or a lifter and miss out on becoming a more capable person. Specializing in only one results in missing out on expressing the strength of your body in all of its forms.

Anyways at the end of the day I just love running and it has helped me out in so many ways and I use that as my way of dealing with stress and it helps me process things and just think things out.

I love this video so much. I constantly hear from people at my gym that I can't or I shouldn't be a powerlifter and a runner. I've done a handful of half marathons and I have another in October but at the same time I'm still hitting squat or deadlift PRs every few months. Honestly I love doing both and I can't imagine giving one of them up but it's still really encouraging to see an influencer that I admire as much as Alan talking about running in this way. hey Alan I went to your gym for a bit pre covid while I was stationed in Northern Cali. Was 100% in on power lifting. Around the time covid happened I hurt my back. With many gyms closed and my back hurt I turned to running. It has become my obsession. Going somewhere with your feet is the best. I still maintain and lift around 4 times a week. I have definitely lost strength and weight but running has become my primary focus so I fully accept that. Doing a mountain marathon this weekend actually up a 14,000 ft mountain and back down with about 8000 ft of gain. Trail running has become even more of an obsession. Something about it feels so primal. Anyway so happy to see you doing these runs and races and hope to see more! Hope you're doing well buddy!

Very inspiring video, I did start running at 14 or 15, in Costa Rica ( 36 years ago) because Rocky IV, there was ( still is) very steeped uphill road like Rocky running in Russia. Anyway, running, was my workout, i missed it , not doing it anymore due to arthritis and multiple dislocations in my knees. But, great outdoors exercise , sense of achivement. Thanks, coach Thrall.

My story is similar to yours. Ultimately I find improved cardiovascular endurance is more valuable than lifting heavy in my daily life. I still weight train but rarely am I lifting refrigerators or similar but I am constantly running up and down stairs, etc. My colleagues are winded after a couple flights, I have no issues and feel better overall.

you have to think about how humans evolved. For ages our survival depended on running, climbing, dragging objects, and throwing. Our daily lives used to be so difficult and intense that training wasn't even a concept unless it was for hunting. Think about how kids play tag and hide and seek, those are years of evolutionary wiring preparing us for hunting.

I’m right there with you. I lifted heavy off and on for years, but I read that regular running literally reduces all chances for death and disease. Running seemed impossible at first for months, but now I crave running more than lifting.

I used to box growing up, and part of that training was a lot of running. Because of it, I loved running. But eventually I moved on to purely strength train. Years later, at the start of the pandemic, I got back into running and fell in love with it all over again. Now I'm training for the NYC Marathon all while still maintaining strength. I think a lot of it, at the end of day, comes down to recovery.

We are at eerily similar points in life! We're both roughly the same age and I also had that feeling of "randomly wanting to scratch that itch" as far as running. It's an entirely different ballgame from lifting, but you look great and look healthy! Keep it up brother!

I was getting into running , I don't own a gym, and your content didn't reflect my goals at the time. Now that your content reflects what I do -- running and lifting -- you've won me back. Hey Alan, I lost 100 lbs once. It is why I run and can’t give it up in my adult life. When I was a kid, I was always chunky and could never seem to get in shape. Once I got my diet together, and started running and working out more consistently the weight came off. To this day, my wife doesn’t understand why I want to run so much, and why I equate my ability to run with being “in shape” - but that’s the long and short of why I enjoy running. Its Cool to hear your story and perspective on running, and I’m really looking forward to this series.

Thanks for this video. I have been flip flopping over this for awhile. I was running around 3 days a week. I then found bodybuilding and was told by trainers that it could be to jarring for leg development. I now realize I should never have stopped. Bodybuilding has been mentally taxing due to my body dysmorphia. My mental state is what should be my priority. This was a good reminder.

@@jackmehoff2363 Yes, to a point, but I am not a PED user, my hormones are in check, I have no aspirations of competing at a pro level. My cardiovascular health is great. Sometimes you just need to decide what is more important to you, my mental health is, running helps clear my cobwebs. I also do not plan to run marathons. If competition at a pro level becomes a dream, for sure, I will cut it down.
