Love seeing the embrace of general fitness in the natty lifting community. This is how you maintain a lifetime relationship with fitness. Being flexible and allowing goals to change - not being insane with specificity for no reason.

Most of your running should be in Zone 2 and 3. But you should also do some internal training at Zone 4 and 5. You're going to have to push yourself mentally and physically if you want real progress. That applies to the gym, and the track.

I’m a collegiate distance runner. Your channel, Zack Telander, and Sika Strength have helped improve my running by teaching me how to get stronger to improve my racing. On top of that the psychology you guys apply to lifting has helped me in running. So thank you for that! You guys were the outside influences to expose me to a method of exercise I will do for the rest of my life. I think people get stuck in labeling themselves As only a runner or a lifter and miss out on becoming a more capable person. Specializing in only one results in missing out on expressing the strength of your body in all of its forms.

you have to think about how humans evolved. For ages our survival depended on running, climbing, dragging objects, and throwing. Our daily lives used to be so difficult and intense that training wasn't even a concept unless it was for hunting. Think about how kids play tag and hide and seek, those are years of evolutionary wiring preparing us for hunting.

With many gyms closed and my back hurt I turned to running. It has become my obsession. Going somewhere with your feet is the best. I still maintain and lift around 4 times a week. I have definitely lost strength and weight but running has become my primary focus so I fully accept that. Doing a mountain marathon this weekend actually up a 14,000 ft mountain and back down with about 8000 ft of gain. Trail running has become even more of an obsession. I love it. I’m 51 and lifting has been my jam pretty much since I was 16… with years off here and there. I’ve run periodically, too, but never really liked it.
Recently my wife got into it, and is really fast. That inspired me to read up on the health benefirs, including cognitive, and suddenly I realized I was missing out.
Damn, it was hard! Especially at first. Especially if you’ve got some mass to move. But that itself ended up being a source of inspiration for me. How can I call myself strong if I can’t propel myself through space for any significant distance? Running is literally the most fundamental human movement pattern, second only to walking! Humans are natural distance runners. Gotta do it!
And guess what? My gym totals started going up again! My ability to recover, far from suffering as I had feared, actually improved!
To be clear, I’m not running marathons, and running is definitely not my priority. I take 2-3 easy runs and one somewhat harder run per week, on the days when I don’t lift.

When I was 25 I used to run at my old high school. I drive by often and think about those days. Maybe I'll get back to it. Thanks, Professor Thrall.

I run and lift. I do them both for their benefits, but also because I enjoy them both. They both are painful, but they are a suffering that I choose and embrace. I don't do either to be an elite competitor in any sport. I don't do them as a physique/bodybuilding competitor. I like to use my body in these ways and condition myself for these activities. I've done 405lb deadlift AMRAP not because it was optimal, but because it was fun. I've run 26.2mi one morning not because it was optimal, but because I knew that I could. I enjoy the normal, well-planned, properly programmed training days, but I like pushing myself in weird ways merely as an expression of myself or as a test. Concurrent training for both endurance and strength sub-optimal for maximizing either? Maybe, but I'm being myself. You do you! God bless

Been a long distance runner/marathoner for 20+ years and just found barbell training a few months ago as a great supplement to training when timed and done appropriately. Really cool and relatable video, finding the same kind of joy in terms of getting into a new activity and reaping those beginner gains. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Great timing - I've just started running again this summer. I dropped 30 lbs bodyweight earlier this year and was feeling weak in the gym. My PR board got erased. Running gave me something to improve on while I adjust to lifting at a lower bodyweight. I'm trying to keep running in the routine as well so I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it Alan.

Bro, i dunno if you are seeing this. 1st thing is you're literally changing weight class. That's mean everything is a PR and new stepping stone to more gain. Walking 30lbs lighter is a blessing for all of your organ man. Keep pushing.

I was fairly inactive for a lot of my adult life, but had a metabolism that meant I didn't gain much weight. When I hit 30, that changed and my weight started to creep up. Rather than just accept it, I started lifting weights and paid much more attention to what I was eating. Seemed to be going great for about 9 months, I'd got up to be able to squat about 1.5x my bodyweight and deadlift 2x. But I'd walk up a couple of flights of stairs and be struggling to breath.
So I took initially to walking daily, then once I was comfortably walking 3 miles every day, started doing a bit of jogging and built up from there. I've kept running as part of what I do since, I'm now just approaching 40. I'm not a fantastic runner, and I can't say I've ever overly enjoyed it. But I very much enjoy not feeling like I'm going to die when I go up some stairs!!

Now i run and lift weights, i look extrmely atheltic but not skinny. I‘m totally happy and much healthier, 37y old, father of 2 kids. Keep it up Alan!

Excited for you’re video on running, I’ve powerlifted for four-five years (sense 14) and during these past two years of general stagnation on powerlifting progress I joined the track team and have sense fallen in love with running, freshman year of community college I told myself I’d gain weight no matter what 150-163 and now that I’ve done so I’m honestly scared too get back into it, I’ve seen the progress from gaining weight and I fear the added stress of running 3-5 miles a day will kill my strength…but I mean if mike Tyson can do it lol
