Hey, everyone. We just wanted to clarify something. As of May of 2023, when this segment was released, there were 13 “thousand footers”-freighters that are 1,000 feet long or more-on the Great Lakes, and the Mesabi Miner is one of them. Some commenters below thought we meant the Mesabi Miner was a “thirteen-thousand footer”-or, 13,000 feet long. It definitely isn’t! It’s one of the Great Lakes’ 13 “thousand footers.” For more info about Great Lakes freighters, take a look at our stories here. 🌊🛥🌞
An employee like Sissy keeps the mood of the crew positive. The difference between success and collapse. Very important to have person like her onboard.
Awesome job Sissy! I wish I would have known that they were in Cleveland when this was video taped, I would've stopped by 🤣. It looks absolutely amazing. Kudos to you!!
The beautiful old Freighters with the Iconic Wheel house in the front and Engines and Funnel in the back, all Getting replaced with standard Boring Engines & Wheelhouse in back.
I’ve always wondered if any women work on the lakers. Sissy is a perfect fit with her captain and crew. Loved seeing this creative lady and her awesome work.
The S T Crapo is a fine looking ship. It sports the Classic Lakeboat appearance, while also being shorter then other Lakeboats. Very sad that it’s now scrapped. Anyways, in the end, Any Great Lakes Ship, From 200ft to over 1000ft are all Cool.
That ship graveyard in Bangladesh makes me glad we have OSHA, the EPA, and my union electrical job. Keep me away from anyone who thinks OSHA is a town in Wisconsin or a hamlet in some Siberian oblast.
Im 48 ive been dreaming of joining a crew on the lakes. Im a highly skilled laborer. From fabrication, painting and diesel repairs, operating heavy equipment ect ect.I wonder if im to old.
Man, Lower Lakes Shipping will be lucky to have any freighters left soon if they keep demoing their old ore boats. It gets lonelier every year when you're watching ships in the Blue Water Basin.
Not really where they go to die. They are broken down into scrap and hauled away to make new steel. They died when they where stricken from the registry of active vessels.
I was disappointed recently to find out the Old Grand Trunk drawbridge across the Black River was demoed and gone. Only the pilot house remains near the Port Huron Water and Sewage Treatment Plant. That thing should've been a museum piece. It was the gateway to the giant rail yard where Huron Cement and it's freighter docks used to be on the St. Clair River. ☹️
I like the metal tote with the 4 point sling for hoisting the food aboard. Looks like something I'd work with from the year I spent as a millwright apprentice...

Give that cook a raise she deserves it!😊

Gosh. That Sissy sure is impressive.

Keep them sailing. I need something to look at besides DOW Sarnia or Shell Soma when I'm drowning crawlers for walleye.
Those deckhands, officers, and engineers deserve that quality food. Theirs' is a thankless, overlooked job in the Rust Belt and Great Lakes Basin.

It’s sad to see that all the ships currently being scrapped are forward pilothouses. So rare now!
17:18....I missed my calling, Sissy!!! Well done!!
One freighter is safer and more efficient than one bomb train or 50 trucks.
I have a picture of the Ojibway sitting right there
Awe the ST Crapo was a favorite of mine to watch while growing up in St. Joseph.
Respect to Sissy, and all the the other ship board cooks that the boys depend on to keep themselves "fueled up"...
Makes me hungry, thank you ladies you deserve so much credit.
NO NO NO NOT THE MANISTEE!, AHHHH THIS KILLS MEE
Sissy is the Mother Hen of the Ship & without a decent Chef there's low morale.
I wish I would have done this when I was younger!
So sad to see Ojibway and ST Crapo like this. I love the classic freighters!
I was a Navy man., and aircraft carriers. Often wondered about the great lakes ship service, due to living here in mich.

The crapo was moored in superior Wisconsin not greenbay, matter a fact on Google maps shows it's still moored there
To hell with ship breakers. These lakers need to be preserved. Think about this. They are proud of destroying history.
Great episode!
Sad to see the old girls go in Ashtabula and CSL Port Lambton.
I just saw a vid with the soo marine supply and there boat is named Ojibway
Boatnerd's ILS tracker made finding freighters way easier from shore. Thanks, Great Lakes Maritime Museum in Port Huron.
I like the metal tote with the 4 point sling for hoisting the food aboard. Looks like something I'd work with from the year I spent as a millwright apprentice...
I swear this was a special on Channel 26 Detroit PBS. Very informative for Eastsiders from Downriver to Port Sanilac.
I love the Footers. Mesabi Miner, Paul Tregurtha, and The James Barker are my favorites. They're hard to miss.
Mesabi Miner and Interlake- the VERY BEST on the Great Lakes!
The Anderson is my favorite.
Wow...if I ate at that Galley every day, i'd be a BLIMP by the end of the month. Wish it wasn't that way, but with me, it is.
Really appreciate this channel. I used to spend a lot of time on the Great lakes in the Coast Guard.
Michigan DNR isn't very good at prescribed burns
Ward Detwiler has a great voice for Great Lakes Now hosting and narration. Keep up the good work Ward!
Great cinematics, news , and information! Very rare these days.
its like sis has her own faoly with 20 brothers they all seem to lover her
I have so much respect for this way of life! Stay safe my comrades!
The world needs more people like sissy
She's awesome
😊
What do you do when you have a month off ? 🥸
