We all think we know the story of Jack the Ripper. The most famous serial killer in history, the man who murdered five women on the streets of Whitechapel - and got away with it. In this two-part Murder Maps special, we re-examine those notorious crimes. We reveal how the story we know today was shaped by the sensationalist press of 1888. And we strip back decades of rumor and misinformation to reveal the true lives of the five women slain. With contributions from world renowned Ripper expert Donald Rumbelow and writer Hallie Rubenhold, author of The Five - the only book to tell the lives of the victims, these documentaries are the true story of the Whitechapel Murders as never heard before.

I had not seen this docu. Always intresting. A few details they got wrong, but the overall picture is pretty good. Also some depictions and artwork I hadn't seen before and that are not used very often.
P.e. I liked the fact Polly Nichols was portrayed as lying with her eyes wide open. A detail that is absolutely true (PC Neil is very clear) but often forgotten or not mentioned. That small detail alone shows us how dark those streets were at night, since the carmen who found her never noticed that. Or that her throat was cut and she was in fact horribly murdered.

But they made out her jolly bonnet?
They noticed her dress was up to her waist?
      Nope. It wasn’t that dark.

@@davesmith7432 According to Coroner Baxter, the PCs at the scene and Inspector Abberline it was very dark. Hence why they failed to see Polly's open eyes, the blood and that the poor woman was murdered.
Her white undergarnment or a bonnet lying apart might be easier to spot than dark blood or open eyes without a glisten of light.
But I'm sure they all got it wrong...

Not a bad attempt at looking at the Ripper murders but rather empty of detail. The 'talking heads' really add little.

@albertross2022 What details? Most documented records no longer exist - Also see part 2

You missed the entire point of the documentary. It's not about the murders themselves - it's a social/cultural history, using the murders as the lens.
